Would I be right in thinking this is like an auv3 Quantum?

Speaking only for myself, MUCH easier to grasp.

    That sounds promising!

  • I’m having trouble seeing how to change the range of notes available in the note dropdown.

With "ABS” on, on the first step whatever note I choose becomes the middle note in the dropdown the next time I use it. This doesn’t seem to work on the following steps- they seem to be locked into the range shown in step 1. Gotta be some way to pick a note outside this range, but I’m not seeing it.

Example: Choose C3 from the dropdown in step 1. The dropdown then shows C2 to C4 the next time you use the dropdown. That’s the range the dropdown for the other steps then shows, too. Can’t seem to change it per step.

Probably operator error here. Can someone explain?

Excited to learn more about the features once there's a better demo/introductory video and perhaps try it out myself. I've found that Woodsman's apps have a more thorough and complete implementation of MIDI 2.0 and MPE features than just about any other developer on iOS, making it more suitable for use in professional and experimental studio setups that rely on some esoteric features.

  • @seawind161 : the range is indeed around the first note ; switch on "ALT" will add/subtract 1 octave extra ; the easiest way is to record the notes by pressing "REC" however you will have to wait for the update 1.0.3 as there was a midi input bug in the v1.0. (I expect the update tonight or tomorrow).

  • @Pxlhg : you are absolutely right and I will change this in next update (I develop and test mostly on Mac where this problem does not occur)

  • @Squishy : in a nutshell some of the usp's I think are in WoodPecker (although I don't have the habit to look what others have ...) . btw one of the reasons I created WoodPecker was because some people here asked if I could put the sequencers from WoodSynth in a separate app/plugin ... et voila ...
    WoodPecker has :

    • 64 steps / sequencer (* 4 variations)
    • 4 sequencers which can send to different midi channels (and/or midi v2 groups) allowing to control 4 different instruments/apps/plugins.
    • continuously adjustable step time for each step (0.5 ... 2.0 times the BPM step) + a mode to preserve the total time
    • random note probability within a range (per step) and limited to a defined scale
    • random on/off step probability per step
    • ratcheting (repetition of the same note in the step) with probability per step.
    • 4 extra midi commands/messages can be sent per step (picth, pressure, aftertouch, CC, ...)
    • this also includes meta commands which allow to start/stop one of the 3 other sequencers and to switch to another variation.
    • can receive or send midi clock to adjust or send the BPM value.
    • can send midi directly to the OS (without going over the DAW) which also supports midi V2
    • has different start modes, also audio input triggering
  • @woodman
Sounds like a mammoth and a half of a sequencer! Appreciate you reaching out with a rundown of what makes it special. The note probability, both trigger and scale, is very cool features for generative stuff. I can’t say I don’t already have all these functions in my midi toolbox right now, but they are across a variety of different apps. Having them all in one package is not only convenient but surely cuts down on DSP usage. And owning other apps of yours, I’m sure the quality is on par if not exceeding things like -ulator and -valvet. It’s a fantastic app release and I wish you the best of luck 🤙

Is this sequencer significantly different from the one that’s in WoodSynth and/or Woodstepper?

  • @skiphunt : it has most of the features of the sequencer in WoodSynth however as WoodPecker has no sound engine CPU will be much lower. As each sequencer can send to a different midi channel, WoodPecker can control 4 different instruments.
64 steps versus 16 in WoodSynth. And has a delta step time (0.5 .. 2.0) with preserve time mode which WoodSynth does not have. And WoodPecker can send 4 extra midi messages per step

👍 Having lots of fun with this! Huge versatility.

  • @woodman:
This looks really cool, Can we transpose sequences via midi input or use one sequencer to transpose another?
Also I saw a setting called absolute note on one of the screenshots. Does this mean we can have either absolute notes or relative pitch values like the Woodsynth sequencer?
    Thanks

  • Seems like a take on Intellijel Metropolis.

Seems like a take on Intellijel Metropolis.

Now this has me interested! The Metropolis and Metropolix are both originally based on the RYK M185 sequencer for the Roland 100M format from 2009. I've been dying to try one out, but haven't had the funds. I know the Metropolix integrated some MIDI functionality, but it seems like this style of sequencer is so designed for the modular paradigm that I imagine that getting it to work in a MIDI environment would entail a significant overhaul of the core concept.

What do you see in this plugin that reminds you of the Metropolis? I notice that the time of each step can be set to varying lengths or rhythms of notes like the Metropolis/x.

  • @Raydiognome : yes transpose is possible with keyboard input (seq settings : set Receive Note On to On or to Relative to 1) ; wait for v1.0.3 which solves a bug in midi input or try it with the stand-alone and external keyboard (or WoodTroller :-).
Interesting idea to transpose from one sequencer, will put that on my TO DO list ...
The ABS button in the settings indeed prevents the notes to change either with keyboard input but also when changing the first note ...
The Relative to 1 option will only change the first note of seq 1 to the note received BUT change the other sequencers with the same relative amount. This is useful when using multiple sequencers to play chords : you don't want all the sequencers to switch to the same note from the keyboard input ...

  • @all : v1.0.3 is available :
fixed midi input from DAW (start with Note On, transpose)
Velocity slider scale updated to 0 .. -36 dB and more usable scaling.
    fixed slider double click values.
fixed “Set All” for sliders in the sequencer settings (which should fix the audio input triggering for all sequencers)

  • Is there an actual link to buy the Mac version anywhere btw? Can’t for the life of me find it!

  • 50-minute walkthrough starting in a few mins, come say hi in the premiere text chat if you’re free!

  • Love the update!

This is the Swedish store https://apps.apple.com/se/app/woodpeckrr/id6744410094?l=en-GB&mt=12
but note the naming, he is mentioning that earlier in this thread

Everything from the ux to the functionality reminds me of the M185 sequencer. Will likely get soon. This is better than hardware. Multiple tracks and AU units, and polyphonic depending on synth used.

  • Was thinking of getting this, but the intro price already went up? Only dropped 2 days ago? Hmmm… I already have WoodSynth and Woodstepper, so I think I’m good for now

Not sure what you mean, 7.99 is the 30% off intro price

I thought it was $4.99 a couple days ago? Could be mistaken. No matter.

I’ll play with the his sequencer in WoodSynth, and see if I want an expanded and more efficient version. He says this Woodpecker seq is easier on cpu vs the seq in WoodSynth, can drive 4 instruments and has more steps, but I just tried 3 instances of WoodSynth in midi slots sequencing 3 instruments in AUM on just an iPad mini 5 and seems tolerable at 43%

I’m sure it’d be better, more convenient with more options in Woodpecker though

Thanks, wow, mad naming confusion all round haha. So it's Woodpecker on the UI of the app, Woodpeckr on the iOS store, and Woodpeckrr on the Mac Store. OK!

  • yes sorry for the name confusion but as I said WoodPecker was already taken and unfortunately Apple does not allow anymore to have the same name on iOS and MacOS (unless it is a universal one)

Ah right, wow, that’ll lead to a lot of headaches for sure

Woodpeckr + OneShot = Infinite Playground

  • @woodman : Can we mix time signatures on this ? For example putting one bar of 5/4 time in an otherwise 4/4 time song .
