Get the iM1 and ELECTRIBE Wave apps. Those will give you gadgets with a ton of usable sounds and also AUv3 plugins to use in other hosts (and EW is fun as a standalone groovebox). Also Module Pro, though I didn't see that one on the sale list above.

ETA: Module Pro is on sale for $19.99, down from $39.99. Great app, though a lot of the sounds are locked behind IAPs.

  • Get the IAPs for iM1. They're a library of usable bread-and-butter sounds.

Got it after the recommendation of several members here!

With this and the SM2 + Desktop IAP, I might be set for some time synth wise.

Still debating if I should get Dagger 🤔

I strongly recommend Dagger , especially on sale. Definitely has that “hardware” sound .

  • What makes it different from other? And what is its specialty? Good at making "fat" basses?

There’s a certain “heft” to the sound reminiscent of actual vintage hardware. It does work good for bass, yes, but it’s really good on experimental music too. Most VA synths on iOS go for the 80s and later type of emulation, and for good reason…it’s far easier to emulate a digital oscillator vs a VCO , hence numerous Juno and Nord apps but no Jupiters or Prophets as of yet. It’s a very tricky thing to nail. Dagger nails it. It sounds more early 70s , not so much Moog but eastern vs Western Europe if that makes any sense

    Really interesting. Thanks.

  • +1 vote for Dagger. Has a very fun and useful randomize button too. And it's a beautiful design that's easy to learn and tweak.

Holy Moly- that's insane- an absolute must pickup at thi price imo. It's such an interesting app- I've been pairing it with Silo and Ringotron lately and it sounds incredible.

Highly recommend this at this price point. What an epic deal.

With Korg Module you don't need the Pro expansion to use IAPs, most of its features are not useful. Also elpiano has more EP sounds for the price of Korg Scarbee, and Ravenscroft 275 is both cheaper and a better piano sound imo than Korg's. Both of those are on sale atm.

I hear the drum expansion is worth getting though, and it works in Gadget.

@oscillotus if you score Dagger, make sure to pickup forum regular @Pxlhg free presets.

    They're exceptional. I'll post a link.

Man, I cannot keep ElPiano from crashing. It seems like multiple instances just shits the bed everytime. I was trying to load 3 instances for Piano Motif and have never been able to get it to work. I really like the sounds, but I think utilizing the gadgets marsille specifically is a better option (for me personally)

Fwiw I use Madrid and Bilbao the most - especially since they went AUV3. Then probably Gladstone, though there are a lot of other options for acoustic drums these days.

  • I've been spending extra time with Dagger and Zeeon lately and I think they are both well worth having as something analog-ish but different. Both can get very phat! As well, they're more fun programming than many other synths that seem to want to just fry my brain. The little sequencer in Zeeon is a great idea generator. Dagger's randomizer is loads of fun. I highly recommend both.

All of the gadgets are good, imo. I use Sydney the least. Chiagmia, and Vancouver are my most used synth. I constantly rotate thru the drum modules as they work so beautifully with OCTACHRON.

Wolfsburg, Helsinki have been my favorite as of late as I've been doing ambient. I love Tokyo because is is a Donca emulator. Recife has some nasty ratcheting. I like all the gadget apps. Could talk about them for hours. Korg has always been special to me since the hardware Electribe days- I carried the ES-1 around like it was a bible. Good times.

Ahh I’m glad you said that cause it was on my list of things I’d been considering

That actually sounds pretty interesting! May be a stupid question, but you do this by loading them as plugins in a host, right? I don’t see a way to route MIDI from an external app to Gadget.

They’re excellently made. Beep Street is very good at making synths. I say this as a developer with experience with DSP.

Both Dagger and Zeeon have done a great job modeling the kinds of non-linearities that make a synth sound real. They go above and beyond what’s normal and you can hear it. They don’t just throw the standard tanh waveshaping function at it and call it a day. They model the behavior of diode saturation, PSU noise, etc.

Emulating filters is hard. It’s one of the most math intensive parts of making a synth. There are some fairly popular synths on iOS that are just pulling in open source filters. I won’t name any names because it’s legitimately flipping hard to make a good filter, and there’s no harm is using open source stuff. But Dagger and Zeeon both have multiple meticulously emulated filters using zero delay feedback. That’s tricky to do, and you don’t see it very often on iOS.

The oscillators in Zeeon also have some wonderful trickery going on under the hood that makes them sound great under heavy modulation. It goes well beyond what’s normal.

So in short, Dagger sounds awesome and has a great user interface. I don’t love Zeeon’s UI quite as much, but it sounds even better.
