Blip Interactive Ltd
I don’t know if this has been posted before, but Blip Interactive, the company behind NS2 has been dissolved. A real shame as Matt created a brilliant product that was sadly not supported.

Loved this app. One of the best iOS Daws that was out there. Still works great. Nanostudio 1 was awesome for its time as well. Here’s some beats I recently posted that I made with Nanostudio 2 strictly on an iPhone.

Still love it! I’m not letting go! All tracks on my next album coming early 2026 are made with NS2. Good chance I’ll be sticking with it for another year or so - until I need to get a new iPad.
I wasn't able to find the original thread where this was first discussed, but here are some helpful info threads:

My first linear DAW on iPad. Some annoying UI design decisions but also many features I hope for in other DAWs like clip cycle and edit sliders. I've begun migrating projects over to AEMS but will continue using NS2 until I can't.
That really sucks. NS2 was an amazing app. I would've happily paid subscription to keep NS2 alive, or donated to a crowdfunding thing to have Obsidian released as AUv3. Alas, too late now. The company is dissolved. 🤦♂️
This won’t prevent me from continuing using NS2 so doesn’t bother me much.. Matt moved to other things in his life years ago so it’s not big news..
I hope he is satisfied and happy, mark he did in my life will be never erased. Respect forever 🫡
Yeah, one of the most stable apps ever 🙏
I do wonder how far he got developing audio tracks.
I wonder if he can make it open source?
He wrote a long piece quite some time ago about his decision. He mentioned that open sourcing would not be happening and why.
I started with Nanostudio in 2010 and was thrilled with it and then elated with NS2. The apps clicked with me and I find NS2 super intuitive to create in NS2. I will use it until my iPads & iPhones die.
Extremely sad that there wasn’t enough support from the iOS music community to keep NS2 in development. As a comparison I was on the Gear Space forum yesterday (I have a lot of gear and a lot of questions) and noticed a thread on Omnishpere 3 which is $400 and $200 to upgrade from v2 to v3. I got a good chuckle over the posters who complained about the upgrade price and other posters complaining about the complainers. HA! Those guys should try out this forum sometime and hear the complaints about $20 price tags! And likewise, those on this forum should maybe read some of the other synth hardware and software forums to get a bit of a reality check. I think we are in a bit of a crazy iOS bubble that is stifling development of great apps.
Re NS2: I rarely post about any of the other hundreds of apps I have and I usually feel a bit guilty posting about NS2 on this forum because the app is, for most people, a dead end. I imagine a lot of forum regulars likely roll their eyes every time they see a new post relating to NS2. I was sad to see the NS2 forum go away, but there probably really ins’t a need for the forum anymore since NS2 users are at this point really experienced with it and don’t need to ask questions. Just occasional threads like this one where old timers lament the casualties of the iOS App Wars.
I saved NS2 on all my old iPhones and on my newer one. It's a legend!
NS2 is still light years ahead in terms of UX usability with the piano roll than anything I’ve tried on mobile.
FLSM is pretty good but no AUv3 and the mixer is not great. I’ve gone with AEMS as the closest experience I’ve had to NS2 but with audio tracks! NS2 is still awesome but my way of working requires audio tracks. NS2♥️
sigh, I love being able to layer midi clips on tracks like it does. makes everything else without it slightly painful.
@Slam_Cut - I don't ever roll my eyes at posts about NS2. It is and always will be a classic until ... heaven forbid, some OS update breaks it. That'll be a sad day, but also one where a lot of people will freeze at least one device at the latest OS that it still works on.
I wish the piano roll became a de-facto standard. I really do.
I still NS2. It's my go-to on my phone, and is 90% my go-to on my iPad. Nothing I've experienced is better to quickly get down layers of different ideas, and makes arranging a joy vs a pain.
+1
Agreed
I wonder how easy it would be to ask AI to code an app similar in features & workflow (plus audio tracks!)?? I asked chat gpt if it could but it just spit out the process (which was too advanced for me). If it’s not possible now, maybe in a year or two an AI could spit out the full code for a working app?
I’m probably dreaming - but Maybe it’s not that hard & someone here who knows more about AI/coding could make an app that is similar to NS2 but with audio tracks and additional features (auv3 fx automation)
In Jacob’s new HaqAttack video with Tapescam developer he said he used AI to help build his apps - maybe he’s up to the task? I’m sure he could raise a few bucks for developing the app from users here (I’d tag him - but can’t remember his name - hopefully he’ll spot this). If he could make an app that runs as efficiently and is great as NS2 - WITH audio tracks & midi fx, midi fx automation, etc & I’m sure I’d be a huge hit!
Again - probably just dreaming… Long Live NS2!!
I downloaded ns2 several times now and every time deleted it after a while.
For me totally not intuitive.
It took me half an hour to find out to open a project.
I liked the original NS better.
I definitely find parts of NS2 unintuitive, but once I’m used to it again after a long break, that fades to the background. I don’t understand we often have such high requirements for “intuitiveness” when it comes to software. Very little in life is intuitive, yet we push past that and quickly even complex tasks second nature.
I knew that! You and the people posting on this thread are true fans. And thanks to your effort at explaining iMazing over the years, most of us will be able to continue using NS2 long after iOS breaks it for others. I was thinking more of the non-NS2 users who might wonder why the NS2 “fanboys” won’t just move on. We’ll see what happens in the future.
Hey, I’m a true fan as well. One of the first apps that brought me to iOS and such a joy it was
(Sorry, guess I needed to post on this thread, although I don’t have anything to add to what was already praised)
What were the reasons for not open sourcing? I might have read it, seem to recall, but does anyone remember?
Of course as a coder myself I understand not wanting people looking into my dirty hacks, not that it might be the case, as NS seems very well structured (didn’t start with tracks in mind, hence the difficulty)
I think I remember some of your Nanostudio tracks, unless I’m confusing you with someone else. Since several people have asked, I will give my wild-ass speculation on open sourcing. If we consider the reasons he had to get a real job, well imagine what happens when the nest is empty and the finances are stable, and burn-out from iOS app development has faded to a memory: Boredom. Hey, what’s this over here…? An app that could be polished up to be what I always wanted it to be….? Plus new things I didn’t think of before!
Like I said, wild-ass speculation, but why not keep the option open? Likely as not current DAW apps will become even more of a small niche market as AI apps dominate in the future and the idea of creating music shifts to telling and AI app what you want and calling that your own. The world is moving pretty far down that road already, and the market for DAW apps will just be the people still on this forum who still enjoy doing things “the old-fashioned way.” So chances are super slim, but I enjoy this Arthurian-esque myth and the possible future return of Nanostudio.
I fully agree and have the same prediction -- for ALL creative fields. Music, Graphics, Photography, Design, Poetry -- you name it. Some of it is obviously already being replaced as we speak.
At this point, I'm kinda paralysed because it feels like ANY non-physical human output could and probably will become obsolete in the not-too-distant future. At least in the context of commercial endeavours. Crazy times.
But maybe this should actually be MORE incentive to open-source stuff? Anyway, I'm not in any position to complain, given that I haven't open-sourced Xequence Audio (which is essentially a web-based NS1/NS2 in-between) either... 🥴
I don’t know but it’s possible the dev used code libraries that could not be open sourced. Or something proprietary. Who knows.
Matt detailed his reasons in a post that is no longer available even on the internet wayback machine. They were purely personal / philosophical and weren't due to library or other licensing issues. Basically, he just didn't want to do it. I think he may have mentioned leaving his options open to return to it some day, though he had no intention of doing so. I could be mis-remembering that part though.
I recall his mentioning that he might want to use the code in the future..and I can sympathize with pouring years of labor into something and not wanting to give it away.
