Coincidentally Turner lived for a time in Margate, about 4 miles from this beach.

Thinking about upgrading from my iPhone 11 Pro, that still has good battery life, etc… but figured I’d upgrade while 11 pro is still supported by latest iOS and sellable back to Apple.

I can’t decide between the 17 pro or 17 Pro Max. The max is only $100 more for a bigger screen, bigger battery, and evidently the new cooling tech works a little better than in the Pro.

Seems like the Max is better, but many complain about the extra size and weight. They say it’s hard if not impossible to use it one-handed.

For those of you using you iPhone for photography, and basically a near pro second camera while traveling… do you have any feedback on the actual use as a camera between the larger Max size iPhones vs the Pro size?

    Hey Skip!

I last moved from the iPhone 8 Plus to the iPhone 14 Pro Max. More than anything, at 76 years old, I love the extra screen real estate for not just the increased viewing size, but also for the largest possible typing area. So, from a usability standpoint, for me, the larger form factor makes photography not just easier on the eyes, but on the hands too. Hope that helps!

    Cheers mate!

Thanks 🙏 I can’t decide. I like the idea of using the iPhone as a larger display connected to my m43 camera for video use, but I’m concerned the extra size and weight of the max may be overkill. I also keep my phone in my front pocket often… I just need to go to a store and handle both in person. I’m also even considering just getting the plain 17 instead of a pro. I’m only asking here for feedback from those, like me, who are way more into mobile photography than the average user

You and I are alike in this respect, I recently spent way too much time pondering if I should update from the 14 Pro Max to something newer. Most of the reasons were to satisfy my 'requirements' for being able to shoot video in Apple Log format. (Every few years, I get into a "let's try video again" mode, and all the bells and whistles seem to begin with the iPhone 15 Pro/Max series, and then mature in the 16 and 17. Hence my yen to upgrade.

What I've just come to realize is that I'm still not overly enamoured with the whole video thing, and as much as the iPhone 17's new 12GB RAM upgrade and the log profiles etc are drool-worthy, for a stills shooter, the 14 Pro Max gives me plenty to work with its' RAW files.

Between the iPhone and my every-day-carry Sony RX100 VII, I can take care of all my travel photography needs. Good luck!

    Ciao!

I was actually just going to get a refurbished 15 Pro, but the savings aren’t really all that significant… considering the 15 pro came out 3 years ago.

I do play with video some, but I’m not all that certain that in actual use… if I’d even bother with RAW or AppleLog, etc. - I mean, regular jpeg and the regular video codecs look fine to me. I’m not going to spend hours color grading and loads of storage dealing with RAW/ProRes, etc. - nice to have, but I probably wouldn’t mess with it after trying it out a few times while the iPhone is new out of curiosity. By the time I’m taking another trip, I bet I wouldn’t use the pro/raw stuff at all.

I’d just get the plain 17, but I do use the 2x on my my iPhone 11 Pro a lot… I’d probably miss that. I’m just not sure I want to pay an extra $300 for 4x and the RAW/ProiRes stuff. I do think I’d miss the LiDAR Scanner though

Personally I would never go back to a smaller phone, and I carry mine (iPhone 12 Pro Max) in my front jeans pocket all the time, with a Mous case, I don't mind the size at all. The bigger screen and extra battery life are way more important to me than the extra bulk.

  • Spent a week in the Alps, I'll post the photos in batches.

These craggy snow-covered mountaintop images are splendid! :)

Regarding the phone... I went to go check one out. I'm definitely going with the 17 pro MAX. It didn't seem as cumbersomely large as many of the youtubers made it out to be. I most often browse my phone instead of my ipad when watching TV, so I'd like to try a larger size phone. It also didn't look like anything that I couldn't put in my front pocket, and although I think I could do a quick scroll one-handed if needed... I noticed that most of the time with my 11 Pro, I end up using two hands anyway.

I'm going to order one, but wanted to use a credit card with promo for travel points.... so, as soon as the card arrives I'm going to order one. I think the trick will be finding a case that's not too thick to make it even larger, but is also plenty grippy enough.

  • Wow! Haven’t caught up on this thread for a while. Amazing photography by you guys!

    @skiphunt that one pic with the saxophone guy on the street reminds me of those pharmaceutical commercials you see on TV;

“Ask your doctor about Skyrizie - side effects may be fatal. Stop using if death occurs”

@Tarekith dang man, I looked up your camera, and wow, that’s one pricey piece of kit. 😱 you must be a professional photographer.
