Is anyone else out here using Beatmaker 3?
I just decided to pull out BM3 and dust it off,:) I know it's an older IOS Daw with very few updates, but as of lately I've been using it again and I must say it's still very good. I was using it for all day and it was solid. I love many features about it. It's a bit like bringing out an older MPC 60 without many new udoates. I hope one day they bust out a BM4!

Still love the sampler in BM3. Wish they would break that off and make it a AUv3.
I actually love the drum pad / patterning and sampling capabilities. It's a powerhouse. It was light years ahead.
The Bitwigian song/scenes/pattern workflow which took me a long time to suss out and which is unlike any othe iOS DAW.
And the IAP instruments
And of course the sampler
Put me down for 'sometimes still use it' these days. I used to walk around using it all the time. Now I am on Maschine which it drew a lot of design inspiration from and it was perfect for ramping up for it. Would likely still use it a ton if I commuted again but the lack of being able to use a modern iPad with wired headphones and walk around... sigh.
I fall under the "I used to use it, but want to use it again someday" camp. When BM3 was first released several years ago, it crashed rather frequently for me. I like to work quick and fast, and if I keep losing project data due to crashes (even though I save projects very frequently), I tend to put an app to the side. I eventually went back to Gadget (back when it was Gadget 1) and then Nanostudio 2 in late 2018.
Question to the BM3 veterans here - does BM3 still crash frequently? Any show-stopping bugs I should be aware of? Also, can I sample oneshots from various AUv3 instruments within BM3? I definitely want to give it another go once I grow tired of Gadget 3 and want a new-to-me creative environment in which to work.
Only things that bug me are the 'management of temp files' (ie. no 'project cleanup') and no way to add 'shortcuts/favorite locations' to the browser meaning everything has to be imported before use... (This is easily done using Files.app but still).
...I've have not had any crashes yet after deciding to re-install it after the latest update so on the 11" M1 iPadPro running iPadOS26.2 it's been smooth sailing for the most part but I'd suggesting disabling multi-tasking (from the control center) when using BM3 so the double-taps on the stop button won't trigger window re-size

Looks like I'll be using BM3 sometime in 2026 to at least produce an EP! I haven't done a "challenge EP" in a long while. 😂 (No shit, this is how I usually learn to use new-to-me apps is by creating an instrumental remix of one of Sash's old songs, and then I craft an EP until I'm comfortable enough with the app).
And, importing before use is what I usually am used to doing anyways. I don't think Gadget 3 has the ability to favorite locations, the same as FLSM, unless I missed something obvious in both of those apps (which isn't unlike me, lol).
I actually stopped using it years ago when I was on an older 2017 9,7 " iPad. It was buggy and BM3 would often crash. A few years ago I bought an 11" iPad Pro M2 and now using BM3, it hasn't crashed ( knock on wood). I think also in the last update they may have done some fixes under the hood, for better stability.I think it also depends on which Audio Units are being used. I like many things about it. I guess though it depends on one's workflow. It can sound a bit "thin" on export, so it may need some tools to beef it up.
Yup, been solid with my 11" M1 iPadPro as well in terms of crashes. Previous iPads/versions I definitely had crashes but in the modern era it has been solid for me. I did have some issues with AUV3 not properly restoring on load a few months ago but the last update apparently addresses this. Have yet to fully test it though.

I use an iPad Mini 7 for my iPad-only apps and an iPhone 16 Pro Max for just about everything else. I wonder if my Mini 7 is just as powerful/more powerful than the M1 Pro.
Hmmm, that mini seems a little more powerful as far as CPU, not sure about memory but I imagine it is well within the window of modern kick ass that BM3 seems to be friendly with.
Several years ago they issued an update that addressed the instability for most people. I don’t use it a ton but I have not had any crashes running standalone.

If the development happened more often I would use it, but it’s just too slow for me to rely on it. Ever since the update that caused it to crash often for many people I haven’t had it installed.
If you are on one of the newer M series iPads, you might want to check out the last version and give it a try. Updates aren't always necessary all the time. I look at it like a piece of hardware that may get firmware updates every year or so. Yes, the development is very slow, but what they created is quite amazing,
That was resolved many years ago (5? 6?) for most people. It is what it is. Imo, some of it’s sampler features are still without peer.
Definitely don’t disagree that it’s got features not matched by other apps. Maybe it’s been off my iPad for longer than I think. Maybe I’ll reinstall it and give it another go - I guess I’m just keeping in my head how would crash either on startup or at some point during a session most times I used it, and haven’t kept up enough to know that’s fixed.
I myself am in the same boat, but the consensus thus seems that BM3 is stable now. I'm still going to wait until 2026 to start trying it again, but I can't wait to give it a proper go.
Same here Jim. When people jump on quickly to laud the updates it makes me want to check it out again too.

Out of curiosity, were you using it standalone or as IAA with AUM or Audiobus? I do recall that using it as an IAA was sometimes unreliable and there were some AUv3 that people had trouble with -- though I mostly use it just as a sampler for use-cases that other samplers I have can't handle.
Mostly standalone. I seem to recall it would sometimes crash on opening but would be fine after restarting, and that it would sometimes crash when loading plugins.
Zenbeats is similar.
Still the best at what it does even after all these years.
2 days straight ..working on the same song. Recording audio, fx , Audio Units. 10 tracks, automation, and all smooth. 32% cpu.
aside from superior sampler and IAPs, some things i thought only BW3 did (I haven’t had ZB on the device in a while):
launch individual patterns from different scene columns selectively, (true clip launch without advancing scenes)
launching timeline tracks selectively on the fly while launching individual patterns across scenes as above (except no pattern from a track can play while it ‘s corresponding is running)
mixing individual timeline tracks from here and patterns from there, on the fly, while switching back and forth between pattern and timeline on one track regardless of what’s happening on other tracks pattern-wise or timeline-wise
switching from a timeline track as it plays to any pattern in any scene for that track, as above or from any pattern from your pattern list from that track, on the fly. (which moves you from timeline to any pattern slot to any scene column to set up that scene launch if that’s the next thing)
switching patterns from your pattern list to the same pattern slot in it’s given scene, on the fly. Useful if you are working with scene columns in the conventional way, but want to choose from more patterns per given scene than you might have # of scenes for that track
launching a scene column while exclude one track to be played on it’s timeline.
so one is given pattern, scene column, timeline track, and pattern list, to work with/launch independently and in combination except as above no fair playing a pattern and it’s timeline track simultaneously)
it’s a complex matrix of function so I may have overlapped stuff.
not sure about this one: does ZB let you make pattern lengths of whatever lengths, like 6 bars + whatever # of ticks BM3 calls “free” divisions?

The developers should look to make it an auv3. The possibilities of its strength in other daws would be awesome. I would def buy it again. I love the keyboard/pads layout out with the chords/hihat role system. Just feels natural to me and the ability to link pads is undervalued. Plus I bought all the sound packs and I would luv to use in Logic Pro for iPad with its effects system.
It’s only one guy I think, and that’s a huge undertaking. Definitely easier said than done.
Good question! I played around with Koala and thought if I put enough time into it I imagine I could come up with a bunch of cool workflow tricks... but I never did. I was already up on BM3. I think they are just different independent feature bags of potential...?
Oh my. A lot. Wow. I don't think I have the time or energy to respond in a well thought out fact-checked way. The sampler features alone would take me an hour to cover. Then there are all the full DAW and pattern and scene launching features, automation, instrument and FX plugin hosting, midi FX support, kick-ass mixer ...
Koala is a kick in the pants and great for casual fun. Not that you can't make serious music with it. tbh, I feel opening up Koala 99% more than dealing with BM3. But trying to describe what BM3 has that Koala doesn't is very much like trying to describe the experience of reading a novel vs. reading the Reader's Digest version. Or maybe what Logic Pro has to offer over GarageBand?
