  • @Pandan That's absolutely fascinating! Seems you mix as you go along and use whatever tool(s) fit the project best. :) Sometimes that's all we can do.

As far as recording from the iPad/iPhone mic, I use Brusfri to remove unwanted noise. Sometimes I use two instances to ensure a clean-enough vocal (at least one that mixes well overtop whatever instrumental I make). I also tend to use a limiter on my vocals as well as an EQ. I also tune my vocals whenever I "sing" since my singing voice is extremely out of practice. I usually do all this in Cubasis 3. Not in that particular order per se.

But after rereading your reply to me, I have some ideas of how I wish to process my vocals differently. :)

And again, extremely well done piece of music you and Kat created. Can't wait to hear more from you, whether the tracks are "political" in nature, or not. :) All the best.

It’s actually really good for something with no room treatment. Definitely not dry and then processed, but also not ringing like some untreated rooms create.

There’s a saying (with variations, but essentially the same wherever you hear it) that goes along the lines of: A bad mic in a good room is always better than a good mic in a bad room. Treatment makes a world of difference, and even putting a pillow close behind the mic makes a huge difference.

However, software has got so much better now, and you can pretty much subtract the room from a vocal and then process it as if it’s dry.

    Fun times.

    Good track BTW!

Someone seeing a message they disagree with, trying to censor it, and fearing accountability for those in power is concerning. Taking political messages in music as a threat should be reason to pause and reflect on those values being attacked.

I should note I’ve come back to this song a lot and the message resonates. I’m fairly privileged that I’m not a standard ICE target, but emotion + experience being conveyed through music gives personal weight to the stories I’m not living. We all have our perspectives and ways of life, and I value any artistic medium that helps me connect to the humanity of a situation I’m not living through. I’m glad bands like Rise Against, Rage Against The Machine, Black Sabbath, and Lamb of God exist to have exposed me to societal issues through a genre I love like metal/hard rock. And I would have a much more narrow view on the world without rappers and artists like Biggie, Wu Tang Clan, or Jay-z conveying the struggles of living in systems stacked against them because of the color of their skin.

    @jwmmakerofmusic + everyone responding:

Hi y‘all- thanks for all your super kind and thoughtful feedbacks- just to answer from the other side of the band and earth: I use a cheap podcast mic with a pop guard which was sold with the Focusrite Solo Audio Interface as a set (might get judged but I got that set on discount for 100€) and I make it work for me. I used it to play in the guitar part in the chorus and my vocals. I have some old padding from a camping mattress that goes behind the mic at the wall and pull a blanket up behind me while singing and rapping. So…basically no cool room treatment and a bad mic 😁

De-esser on about -35db (highwalled very european flat, it’s a reverb hell) , and then I eq right away before Recording. So basically I try to get it to sound the closest to what I’m aiming for in the "dry" but not dry state before recording and then saucing it with reverb and delay.

I mix while I arrange and compose. In case of fight/ flight I pitched a one minute arrangement with beats, bass, piano and some arpy synth to pandan via BandLab, only using onboard sounds and fx and he replaced the beats with better ones and we chopped up what we had and arranged it pretty much around the angry bass and then he dropped his bars. We both talked about the tone and what kinds of emotions and topics are rising up for us. I personally never rapped before, but pandan motivated and inspired me to try and I became a bit better since we recorded fight/flight several month ago.

I always mix every step of the way, in general, I need the sounds in their specific "spaces" (neurospicy peeps might understand). It became even more important to me after a friend who is a mixing and mastering engineer told me that compression is completely overrated and how a great mix is essentially what is needed so the mastering is really just to „make it louder“. If something is intrusive to my ear, I will open a can of worms to make it work, as @pandan can confirm. 😬

Thanks everyone for their feedback and time listening. Coming from a country which went through 50 years of fascism, war, control, deportation, genocide and then Socialism/Communism right after with the same tools of control and manipulation I feel so grateful to be alive (which is already a miracle considering the circumstances) and able to make music that matters to me and inspires others to feel and think. Democracy is a blessing, really. Be safe and love your neighbour, we or our ancestors have all been immigrants or refugees once ❤️

@rumple - that comment is way out of line. Personal attacks are not OK. Please respect our request to keep the discussion civil.

  • And, for further side discussion, here, I’ve made the thread myself:

    https://forum.loopypro.com/discussion/67270/spinoff-thread-from-fight-flight-an-anti-ice-rap-track/p1?new=1

For this thread, keep it about the music.

  • @Katinkera Thank you for joining and sharing your process as well. :) Very fascinating, but your vocals came off sounding perfect despite the make-shift setup. Also, very good encouraging words at the end as well. :) I hope you'll visit here more often and share your music as well.

C'mon guys, we all know who was being talked about. Let's not play games.
Besides, even if it was "passive" it was specifically about a forum member. It's just not ok even if the name was left out.
And - we had asked to keep it on topic here and requested it to be taken to a different thread for freer discussion.
I truly didn't want to, but I had to say something. That's the last I'll say though.

Wait, you're saying there is an obvious fascist whose presence is tolerated on this forum? Why would any music forum tolerate that? 🤔

Really?? You're going to play games like that? There is exactly one person in this thread that opposed the song posting. Name me who else the post could be referring to. I resent you twisting my words and meaning if that is what you intentionally did.

(This reply of mine should have probably been done by PM, but too late now. Richard or rumple, if you would like to continue the conversation, please feel free to PM me.)

No names were named. If there are some members who are obvious fascists that is a very poor reflection on this forum.

You seem to tolerate the person you’re alluding to far more than those that criticise him.

Yeah Brusfri is pretty amazing for this so I rely a lot on it these days.

And I never thought to try putting two of them on the same chain @jwmmakerofmusic , maybe I’ll try it sometime!

I'm sincerely just doing my best to remain objective and even handed. I implied no agreement or disagreement with anyone. I only said that calling someone a facist is out of line, especially in light of our requests to keep the discussion civil.

Sure, I shouldn't have taken the bait once I made my point. Regretting that now. It'd be nice if we could just drop it.

Would you put one pre and post vocals? One to filter room audio and another post effects for things like humming or static?

I actually hadn’t thought too hard about it, and so far one instance has been enough so I think I’d just moreso experiment with it but one at each end of the chain as you said perhaps might work in cases like that.

I’d personally rather deal with any kind of noise as early on in the chain as it makes itself audible and just fixing it inside whatever plug-in is causing it, but I have at times gotten into a furious flow of adding too many efx willy nilly to the point where it is just faster to add a fix-it at the end of the chain. Much to the chagrin of my CPU!

That is not what happened. If you want that discussion: take it to Other.

Yes, it is what happened. Look for the first-person video of the agent who was struck by the vehicle.

This whole thread belongs in Other. It's a political message. If there's any question about that, a quick review of the message in the music is in order.

    @NeuM : Apparently I’m in a minority but I agree with everything you’ve written here .

  • @Pandan @Katinkera great track and so important that protest songs have an outlet on a creative music forum like this. I like to think Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan would have been welcome here. Maybe Chuck D will pick up an iPad and surprise us one day! Protest music is essential and something very different to hate speech.

    Keep it up! 👊

There is no such thing as "hate speech" as far as our First Amendment rights are concerned. Word to the wise.

Ignoring the politics of the song for a moment, if I had engineered this, I would’ve made it more “in your face” and confrontational in the mix to emphasize the message. A mix of dry and reverbed vocals, I would’ve played with the stereo mix, I would’ve played with the beat for greater impact and I would’ve given it a solid hook so it would be very memorable.

You don’t become N.W.A. or Rage Against the Machine with a soft production. I’d also play with the dynamics. Variance in volume or in the overall tone can unsettle the listener or create more excitement because it gives a piece life and sense of the unexpected. These are just a few things that could give this more impact.

I believe these are all practical comments which could be used to make the piece better. But since there are no commercial considerations here and most music posted is just for fun, it would be entirely up to the original poster to use or ignore these or anyone else’s suggestions.

Does that pass your comment test?

Interesting, I would've gone this road too if I produced one. Nevertheless, I also take pleasure in listening to these kind of late night, dark rumbling, monotonous tracks. Like you said this one may have room for improvement and you absolutely made great points. I still think the production is great for the limited time OP had to produce !
    (Test passed lol)
