  • It will be interesting to see what happens to existing Final Cut, Logic and Mainstage users...
...at least there's still the option for one-time purchase just in case...

I bought Pixelmator Pro a few years back and enjoy that as well :)

I'd pay extra not to have those awful icons. Luckily only the subscription version of Logic on Mac gets that eyesore of an icon. The non subscription version will have a different icon. Hopefully it will stay as it is...

I'm so glad Alan Dye has left Apple. Awful designer. The quicker they course correct now that he's gone, the better.

As someone said, both Apple and Meta's average IQ went up when he left Apple for Meta...

  • Two weeks to go until they drop...
...then we'll see what happens to existing users :sunglasses:

Considering the subs are cross-platform the LogicPro for iPad sub should cover Logic sub and vice-versa in case it turns out that a new purchase is needed...

  • edited January 13

The apps will continue to be available to purchase outright for Mac, separate to the subscription bundle. I can't find any mention of how or if the individual apps will be available on the iPad.

There’s an option there for now. Hopefully that stays the case. Can’t say I’m excited for pages and numbers going sub, even if there’s a free base version. Entry into the Apple ecosystem is already pricey, and I’ve always seen full featured GarageBand, Pages, etc. as part of the package. I know that’s not advertised but felt like a good faith move. I do like that this is universal, and kind of makes sense if you’re already paying for Logic on iPad. $70 extra for the rest of the bundle doesn’t scream great deal to me but I don’t use Final Cut Pro or Pixelmator.

I don't want any AI shite, templates or clip art for Pages or Numbers so I'm fine with the free versions. I'd pay a subscription to remove all that crap

  • I'd need to get a new Mac in order to take advantage of the new 'AI Slop' they include in the subscription versions of the apps...

I guess they had to try to do something, because with “AI” all of those complex programs are easily replaced with a single (usually free) service for the general public (Gemini, Grok, OpenAI, etc.).

The only baked in AI feature I find useful is ChatGPT assisted coding (and it’s hard to consider that baked in since you need to install GPT). It’s kind of fun to doodle in Notes and have AI generate something from it but that feature hardly ever works. It refused to do anything with the word “Raven” for whatever reason. Truly some robust tech there haha

The new google Gemini model should make that all work much better (or worse depending on your perspective).

I use Logic as a tool to help me write music. I don't even like generative MIDI plug-ins. I like writing all the notes myself. As long as Logic lets me do that I'll continue to use it. I'll ignore any horrible AI shite they might add in the meantime.

I do like some of the ML stuff in Logic though. Stem splitter and ChromaGlow are pretty great. I occasionally let the Drummer play me a tambourine or shaker loop too...

New Logic Pro features for both Mac AND iPad

New “Synth Player “ and “chord ID “

Logic Pro gains new capabilities aimed at both professional musicians and content creators producing original music. Synth Player joins the existing AI Session Player lineup, offering electronic music performances with various chordal and synth bass parts. Developed by Apple’s sound design team, Synth Player can work with Logic Pro’s built-in synthesizers, third-party Audio Units plugins, or external hardware synthesizers.
Chord ID uses AI to analyze audio or MIDI recordings and convert them into usable chord progressions, eliminating manual transcription work. The feature can identify complex harmonic content from recordings and automatically populate Logic Pro’s chord track, which drives all AI Session Player

I’ve no experience with ChatGPT, but a an ex-coder I know has used Claude for coding and I was informed that very little cleanup was necessary afterward. That’s incredible to me.

It is pretty wild. I’ve done plenty of coding but was new to Swift and got ChatGPT to help me build a prototype color palette extractor app in an afternoon. Having a coding background definitely helps with troubleshooting but I can see someone with no experience converging enough prompts to build something they like.

  • Well at least my University job will allow me to get all of these for just $29/year. I don’t think that was an option for the iPad subscriptions previously? My greatest update wish is the full version of Sampler for the iPad and no more “missing sample” warnings for my user created instruments.

Something that seems to be under-appreciated about these systems is that like the Internet itself, these services bring the power of thousands of people's expertise to the individual. Today it's possible for one person to create a business that performs like a major corporation. That is empowering like nothing before in history. And for those professionals who are worried about their jobs being replaced with AI? They have access to the same benefits of AI, plus their personal experience (for example, you with your coding knowledge) to give them a leg up.

If I was new to the world of work, I'd be creating new businesses, new apps, new "anything I could think of" left and right to take advantage of what is available today.

  • Looks like they’re also finally adding proper comping to Logic in the new update! Hopefully there’s a nice set of bug fixes in there too 🤞

  • This feels like a step towards eliminating the one-time purchase version of Logic/Mainstage on desktop, starting with the enablement of features you only get from the subscription. I'm mostly moved on to an Ableton workflow on desktop anyway and have been wondering if I really need my Logic sub on iPad; I don't use it much. Think I might be done with Logic.

One of Apple's historic strengths was that they didn't come across as rent-seeking in all things (I'm thinking back to a while ago here). Now that "services" are such a revenue driver for AAPL, I'm afraid that value is out the window. Already I was annoyed paying a subscription for LP4i, justifying it because hey, it pays for a regular cadence of updates. But that cadence has been slipping lately. And I'm not really interested in most of the AI features, which appears to be where all of the focus is these days.

Yeah I'm really hoping for some reversal on the terrible direction they've taken with HID. Unfortunately that's far from their only structural problem at this point.

If you already own Logic Pro, I can't see them taking away your software. They're trying to compete with A.I. services here, based on what I'm seeing. So they are competing with "free" in many cases. Even Affinity is now free, with their AI design services as an add-on. They had to do something to respond and this is how they're doing that.

  • Glad that they're locking the LLM stuff behind a paywall. Makes it even easier to avoid.

Yeah where we're heading is an "ice floe" situation though. Sure, I'll be able to keep Logic Pro 11 (as long as macOS supports it), but new features will be locked behind a sub, a growing number of projects created a sub version (i.e. LP4i) will be unable to open on a "purchased" version, eventually the OTP version becomes unavailable for new users/versions, and you're out on the ice floe. Can't update macOS or buy a new Mac without getting on the sub.

Just by disposition, I'd much rather pay for an upgrade to Logic Pro 12, but upgrade pricing is something that Apple has steadfastly refused to solve for on the App Store. It seems clear from this that they never will, but instead will continue to push everyone toward subscription pricing/rent seeking.

That's just where I am. I'm sure the model will work for some folks.

They used to be happy making money selling hardware, and software licenses. They still sell a shitload of hardware. And I'll still be buying it, at least until they stop allowing software that was sold outside the App Store. Then I guess I'll go back to being a Linux guy, ugh.

  • I'm looking forward to chord ID and better comping.

Considering the power and function of AI’s will only keep improving going forward, Apple will have to keep up. We’re heading toward a time that limitless knowledge and capability is trending toward free (or close to it) for everyone.

I'm not sure I agree with your statement there. I think it's very possible that we're heading for a time that all knowledge and capability is per-use paywalled. We'll see.

That said, I did a closer read on the press release, and it seems like the OTP versions of the "pro" apps have the same feature set as the sub versions. Only the "office" apps have sub-only features, for now.

Logic Pro gains new capabilities aimed at both professional musicians and content creators producing original music.

Interesting. I'd still like to see them make a Session rhythm guitar feature, just like bass, drums, and keys. These are useful for fleshing out ideas quickly and one only gets a generic sounding result by not taking a couple of minutes to customize the results.

  • For those who had a question about the paid version of Logic Pro:

And even though I bought Logic Pro for desktop, I'd consider subscription-based in-app purchases to expand capability of the software if they offered some really special features, like "Session Singers" for example. Or being able to record your own voice and then use that as your singer (as is now a feature on Suno.AI). A built-in, tightly integrated feature like that would be a nice time saver and better for security if it was all on your own desktop.

  • I sincerely doubt Apple will ramp-up the updates and content deliveries even after making the apps subscription...
...we might see some clip-art packs and templates for various types of documents but feature and functionality updates?

Maybe once per year like it currently is...
