  • ("Heavenly" Ambient)

I didn't know what I was making when I went into this one, lol. I didn't have a plan outside of "drone and piano". So, I used Steinberg's Etude ran through Rottenpool Reverb for the piano, Atoms' default preset for the pad, Iconica ran through Rottenpool for the strings, and Bleass Megalit for the drone (albeit a softer drone).

Despite not having a plan, I wanted to make Dark Ambient, you see. Then at the last second it dawned on me to make something in a major key rather than a minor key. So I programmed the notes for the pad at 70% chance and the piano at 50% chance. The strings underpin the melodic and harmonic motifs and blend in nicely with the drone once that comes in.

This piece of Ambient is definitely the opposite of what my friend Svetlovska makes and is the opposite of what I usually make (from Dark Ambient to Space Ambient), lol. This piece oddly has this nostalgic quality to it, like returning to an old familiar sacred space you haven't visited in a long time. Honestly, that was unintentional until I started live recording the piece and felt a bit emotional during the process.

Anyways, I hope you all enjoy this last piece for today. ❤️

  • I ran out of time today to create something. 😬 Well, I posted three pieces yesterday, so that hopefully makes up for that. 😅

  • (Brian Eno-esque Ambient)

Well, I may have missed yesterday's entry (just was so busy with everything else), but as I said, I posted three the day before, so that sort of makes up for that. Here's today's entry, inspired by Brian Eno.

Created and recorded in AUM, sampled into and performed live within Koala. I sampled the piano and organ from Korg Module Pro, and I sampled the drone from Bleass Megalit. Enjoy.

  • (Ambient)

Having insomnia, so decided to make a piece of Ambient that sort of describes that feeling of being stuck in the limbo world between wanting to fall back asleep but unable to. Hope you like it.

  • (Ambient)

This piece is superior to the previous one in terms of...just about everything from musicality to reverb choice and such. Most instruments were sampled from Korg Module Pro, but I sampled Streichfett for the drone. I used Bleass Reverb as my main reverb of choice, and it does not disappoint. It has a nice quality to it, but for a reasonable price of (I think it's currently) $7 USD.

I followed that up with Klevgrand DAW Cassette instead of Taip this time. Taip's tape hiss (as far as I know at any rate) works activates when there's sound input rather than a continuous hiss for that "classic imperfect" feel. I mastered the recorded live performance in Cubasis 3.

One thing to note is I usually set the initial volume levels in Koala Sampler, but then sometimes when I add the next element, it comes in a bit too hot and noticeable, so I quickly adjust the volume so it's less jarring.

Honestly, on second thought, this piece probably could've done without the drone, but I just purchased Streichfett (how was I unaware of its existence!?) and wanted to incorporate it into my next piece.

Regardless of all that, please enjoy.

    Nice, Jim!

Thanks kindly mate. :) I do enjoy making Ambient. Started losing my way when trying Koala's sequencer instead of just using straight-up audio loops. However, I like using the loops better than using the sequencer. Just my personal preference of course.

  • (Ambient)

Some Frippertronics-styled looping in Koala. I mostly sampled me playing some musical passages with instruments from the Greek-Turkish pack from Beathawk, with the flute coming from the Middle East pack. I used a tremolo sound for the drone rather than some synth.

I used Bleass Reverb and Bleass Shimmer for the reverbs, followed by Taip for the glue and saturation and slight tape wobble.

I hope you all enjoy this one. ❤️

  • (Drone Ambient)

So for this piece, I sampled the bass and mid drones from Megalit, and the "computer" sound from Alpha. All looped with Koala's crossfade looping. I used Bleass Reverb for the reverb. The only non-Bleass apps I used in AUM were Klevgrand's DAW Cassette (if @bleassapp made a tape emulation, I'd use that instead) and Koala Sampler for the live performance. And of course my mastering chain in Cubasis 3 for mastering the piece (this time, I used Bark Filter, followed by Cubasis' limiter, followed by Youlean's Loudness Meter).

Believe it or not, I put together and threw on some chicken and shrimp gumbo while live performing this at the same time, lol. I hope you all enjoy.

  • Post 100 in this thread, lol. I'm really on a roll this Jamuary.

    (Drone Ambient)

Wanted to create more Drone Ambient. I sampled Bleass Omega for the low drone (it's the third that comes in), and Megalit for the mid and high drones. I used Koala Sampler for my live recording. I used Velvet Machine as my "reverb" rather than a reverb, and I used DAW Cassette for the "tape" effects.

    Please enjoy. :)

  • (Drone Ambient)

Okay, now this is more like it, lol. During the last piece, I relied on Koala's "attack" and "release" sliders to bring sounds in and out. This time, I put each sound down their own buss lane in Koala's Buss Mixer so I could "ride the faders" to bring sounds in and out more subtly so as to not be jarring. The only jarring thing I wanted was for some granular effects in the middle of the piece.

I sampled Bleass' Megalit for the low drone, AudioThing's Noises for the middle drone, and Bleass' Omega for the high drone. I also have the aforementioned surprise in the middle where I used Bleass' Granulizer. No, it's not your speakers/headphones giving out. It's just part of the recording. I used Stratosphere Cloud Reverb for my reverb, followed by Bleass' Granulizer as mentioned, and Taip for the tape effects.

Honestly I'm torn between Taip and DAW Cassette as to which one is my favorite. But regardless of all that, please enjoy this piece. I'm particularly proud of this one, so I'm tagging @Pierre118 and @rottencat and @Svetlovska to give this one a listen. ❤️

  • (Ambient Drone)

I'm in a bit of a time crunch today, so I made another simple Ambient drone. Used Bleass Omega for the bass drone and Megalit for the other two drones. Live performed in AUM via Koala Sampler. Enjoy.

  • (Ambient with a Drone)

Today, I decided to do something just a bit more musical and combine some sort of drone with Eno-esque looping. I used @bleassapp 's Megalit for the drone (really is an amazing synth that I'm getting a ton of mileage out of), and everything else (piano, viola scrape, soprano voice, and sparse orchestral drums) came from Korg Module Pro. Koala was ran through Bleass Reverb and Taip.

The piece sounds like it was recorded on a worn-out Tascam due to the Taip plugin. I really wanted to give this mix a grittier feel rather than a clean feel this time around, so I messed with the settings to give it ugly saturation and wear and tear. I'm rather chuffed with how it turned out! I hope you enjoy.

  • (Drone Ambient)

Just another drone for Jamuary. Honestly I'm getting a bit sick of Jamuary and may clock out a little early from this challenge. I've done more than 31 entries, sometimes doing multiple entries per day. This is my 35th entry.

Now that doesn't mean I'm done with producing music. I'm just tired of Jamuary, period. 😮‍💨 Consider this my last entry before I return to making music at a less hectic pace.

If anyone wants to comment on the pieces now, feel free to do so.

  • Forgot to mention this one here was my favorite of the challenge.

Just got through another batch listen of the last few day. I think this one is my favorite too. You have done a damn fine job with January my friend!

Also, is it bad that I thought of overdubbing this one with sword fighting and martial arts Japanese shouts? 😂

Haha! I'm not sure about the sword fighting part, mate, but martial arts shouts and Kabuki theater shouts would be fun. Just be sure to high-pass those a little so they don't muddy the bass area. ;)

Yep, this is also my best take on Japanese music in general to be honest. Sounds similar to the more traditional Japanese music and Kabuki performances I saw on Youtube.

Yeah, it’s definitely got the flavor of movie music about it, but without all the cliches that often plague ‘Japanese’ music that is created in the west.

That means my due diligence has been fulfilled. I remember about two and a half years ago I created a piece of Trance music called "The Journey", but it was originally titled "Genji". It sounded far more Chinese than Japanese, but I didn't know any better at the time. Especially since some travel channels I follow(ed) religiously on Youtube use Chinese background music when traveling Japan. Not "Abroad in Japan" thankfully, but channels like "Kara & Nate". I thought that "generic SE Asian that always sounds mostly Chinese" background music was just a part of the Japanese music tradition. 🫣

After much deeper study of Japanese music and culture over the past couple years, I think I finally have a grasp on the traditional music of Japan. For instance, the music seems to flow with nature far more than set to a strict Western 4|4 time signature. There are certain music scales in Japanese music that definitely differ from what most Westerner's associate with Japan (and South-East Asian music in general).

Given that traditional Japanese music flows differently than traditional Chinese music, I found that the "Frippertronics" method of tape looping felt the most natural way for a Caucasian Westerner like me to convey the feeling of traditional Japanese music. It definitely sounds mostly Japanese to my ears.

Anyways, I've become so familiar with traditional Japanese music traditions that when I watch a travel channel on Youtube that uses "insert generic SE Asian music here that always sounds mostly Chinese" rather than actual traditional Japanese music, it makes me cringe. 😂 And it's always the Caucasian vloggers too who probably don't know any better.

(But now you can see the reason why I mistakenly created a "Chinese" Trance track originally titled "Genji". And yeah, I no longer watch "Kara & Nate" as they've become increasingly insufferable over the years. I just can't place my finger on what it is exactly.)

Damn Jim, been a bit more absent from the forum lately trying to learn how to GM a TTRPG, but you're on a roll! I'll have a lot of catching up to do. I just discovered that I can stream Soundcloud to my WiiM into my speakers, I might just put your music as background for my daily tasks! Great work your doing, I'm sure you are getting a lot out of it in terms of practice!

I definitely did get a lot out of this in terms of practice. :) Found a system that works for me personally for creating Ambient. I may do another piece today, we shall see. :) But it won't be a Jamuary piece. I'm done with this challenge, lol.

You’re too keen Jim… 35 creations… 31 days in January… should have spread them out and you would still have had 4 in the bank for later 😊
PS Kabuki is my favourite as well 👍

Thanks mate. :) And yeah, spreading them out may have been a smarter idea, but I like to just upload and move onto the next thing, lol. I don't wish to be too precious with my creations - unless it's a love song for my girlfriend. 😂
