Apple App Store app refunds still a thing?
I’ve tried to return a few apps in the past couple of months and been denied every time. In the last case I asked to have the decision reviewed and was still denied with no option for contesting the decision.
In this case I mistakenly purchased an older version of the app that made no mention a newer version existed. I wanted the newer version and I’m out $15 for this mistake. I’m not going to purchase the new version now. In fact, I was going to purchase a few more lower priced apps but decided not to bother. I feel bad because I want to support the developers, but I’m really put off buying anything at this point.
Is anyone having any success with refunds?

This is a subject that frustrates me so much. I had success in early 2025, but lately not so much as well... In the EU, there is a mandatory refund window. I hope they eventually do it as well in Canada.
Not really - They don’t seem too interested in mitigation or supporting evidence. An explanation would go a long way. I have been turned down for refunds previously when I thought it would just be a matter of course.
If you live in a country which has 'Right of Withdrawal' you should be able to get a no questions asked refund within 2 weeks. Otherwise, unfortunately, it's up to Apple's refund review system, and they certainly have been known to unfairly reject valid requests for a refund. Is it getting harder in such countries to get a refund than before? That I don't know.
I tried getting a refund on Replicant 3 and it was denied. Maybe it’s all about developer discretion. I dunno.
Nothing to do with devs whatsoever, Apple deals with everything.
Oh wow, wonder why it suggests contacting the developer. Ah, maybe to “ resolve” whatever issue I wanted a refund for. Always fun telling a development team their app sounds like boo boo.

I’ve been able to get refunds fairly easily. When FabFilter released Pro C3 and I had just bought C2 a couple weeks before I got refunded saying “new version came out after initial purchase”.
How many refunds have you requested in the past?
Two have been successful out of eight attempts in the entire time I’ve owned an idevice.

You only have 2 chances before it gets blocked out. 1 initial refund attempt, 1 appeal. Then there is nothing that can be done anymore. I even once tried to get a rep to change it, he said he can't do anything.
You can’t. Decision is “final” and there are no more options to try.
You would think with all the class action lawsuits Apple has been hit with in the past that they might try to be a bit more consumer friendly with App Store purchases.
I’ve initiated a dispute through PayPal. I don’t expect it to be successful, but it’s my only option at this point.
Watch out with that, I've read that they sometimes suspend accounts who do this...!

Just a question: is it easier to get refunds when you pay with Apple Gift card?
I imagine it would be harder if anything.
A couple of weeks ago I asked for a refund and got it. I live in Canada. My Apple account is old now. I buy apps since....I cannot recall. I bought way too many apps. My refunds ratio is very low.
99% of the time I pay with giftcards.

I believe all of the few times I've requested a refund I used "Purchased by mistake" and never had a refusal. The one time I used whatever the option is that says it doesn't work as advertised, I think that one was refused.
Apple won’t change their ways unless they’re legally forced to (it sounds like the EU has the right idea) or they get hit hard enough in their wallet by yet another class-action lawsuit.
After giving it some thought, I canceled my PayPal dispute and will just accept this as a learning experience.
The end result is I’ll be curtailing my app buying severely. Sadly it’s developers who get hurt by this as what I spend means nothing to Apple.
Never had a problem with refunds in Canada! I think the only time I got rejected was when I tried to return something that was part of a bundle deal. Pretty much all of my return requests are when I realize that an app doesn't really add anything that I can't already do with my existing apps.

I wouldn't be too surprised if they take some sort of sulky revenge on EU customers for Right of Return by refusing more refund requests outside the 14 day window. 🙄
If their behavior in countries without strong consumer protections is any indication, they will probably accept no returns outside that 14 day window.
Kudos to the EU for having that kind of protection. It sounds like Canada does as well.

Last April I purchased the Moog Mariana Bass Synth along with two IAP preset packs, this app has had many issues that I reported to the developer within the first few weeks, each time they told me my issues were passed on to their development team who would work to issue a fix. As the months went by more and more issues were appearing, I contacted the developer again with all my new findings, they told me to watch out for a new update.
The last straw was when iPadOS26 was first released last September, this caused the Mariana UI to not scale properly when it came to exporting user presets, the export window sat at the bottom of the screen with only the top border showing, I contacted the developer again!
On December 19th I asked the developer if there was any intention on their part to issue any kind of fix for all the reported issues over the last eight months, they finally told me they had no plans for any updates.
I contacted Apple Support and applied for a refund for both the app and IAPs, they told me I was outside the 30 days and a refund was refused, I explained that the developer assured me a fix update would be released in the first weeks of purchasing the app and that they constantly told me a update was in the pipeline, this prevented me from applying for a refund.
Apple told me to ring them and explain in more detail the reason for wanting a refund, after a lengthy phone call they said……..sorry, we can’t issue a refund because you are over the allowed time limit!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So my answer is NO, I am not having success with a refund!

This has been discussed in the past and I remember people making the argument that your specific region does affect your ability to receive a refund. Some places in the word do not have the same consumer rights, or protections that other areas have in place. Also some places in the world don’t have the same attitude toward returning process in general. So where you are in the world directly affects your refund likelihood. On top of that some other generic things to consider…
Obviously your reasoning, or your evidence for a refund request is important. It must be a reasonable request with explanation.
I can’t prove this but believe your “refund record” can occasionally come into play, but that’s only if you over use the refund process repeatedly.
I’m In the states, I have only submitted 2 refunds over the past decade or so, and both were successful. The last one was 3-4 years ago, but for me, at least that time, it was relatively straightforward.

I’ve reached out to the developer to see if they could do anything to help me and they can’t or won’t. They insist that only Apple can make it right.
I’m over it, but there are two results for me: I won’t buy any more of the developers apps (because there IS something they can do and anyone who has ever published an app knows that). Secondly I’m running with what I have on my iPad (which is plenty) and won’t be buying many new apps in general (with the exception of updating loopy pro when the time comes).
I feel it's especially dishonest from Apple since there is no ability to test an app before buying it. IMO, there are 2 ways of doing it. Let people demo an app but offer no refund or have a mandatory refund window.
You didn't buy from the developer, you bought from Apple. In fact, the developer has no record whatever that can be connected to you. They only received 85% of the sale amount (from Apple, not from you). I suppose they could take you at your word that you bought it, or request you show your Apple purchase receipt, eat the 15%, and cut you a check for your purchase amount.
I'm just sayin' - I personally wouldn't hold the refund refusal particularly against the developer. It's 100% accurate to say that they have zero influence over Apple's decision making process. The only way they could "make it right" would be to cut you a check. That's kind of a lot to ask IMO. But that's just me.
[edit] On further thought after reading your original post, there is another way. They could give you a code for the new version. That would cost them nothing, and make things right for you. I wonder if they would consider it if you asked. Like me, they may not have thought through that option. Might be worth a try.

Other than offer you a coupon code for the other app, I don’t think there is something they can do. As far as I know, there is nothing a developer can do to get you a refund.
I know they couldn’t influence the refund decision as they have zero influence over that. I disagree that I didn’t buy the app from them: they made money from Apple because I paid Apple for the app. Had I not made the purchase, they wouldn’t get that money. I didn’t expect them to cut me a refund and wouldn’t suggest it.
Yes, they could’ve offered me a code for the updated app. After my second email to them I asked and they won’t do it. It would’ve cost them nothing and been a gesture of good faith that would’ve gone a long way. I could’ve furnished my receipt from Apple to prove I made the purchase.
The developer should have added something to the description of the outdated app that a newer version is available.
