  • Ok so I bought this Cache thing,,, And I like the waveform view/pause/cue element of that BUT I was perturbed to see the volume slider has disappeared.. as I generally preview samples over the top of a loop or track already running some quick way to balance ( in Cubase3 ) the sound against the playing element is essential, is there a way to reimplement a vol knob or slider into the interface?
You may call me a dreamer but what I miss most ( from pc ) is the sample browser in Sony Acid as that played the files in time with the track tempo and also in key ,,, I know, such things would be complex to include and unlikely but I just thought I’d give it a mention as such a thing would make this app essential across the board I imagine. Meanwhile thanks for yr app at a no brainer price mr Le Val

@lewisleval I noticed two things which I’d love to see changed:
    1. If the Cache AUv3 UI is closed inside AUM, Cache stops sending out audio
    2. Even if the Cache AUv3 window is open, when you switch away from AUM to another app, Cache stops sending out audio.

    OK thanks Edward

An update for Cache is available now! Loading collections and folders is now far quicker than in previous versions, I’ve given the app a better method for handling data which makes everything far quicker, smoother and more reliable.

The volume slider at the bottom is now a draggable playhead which also shows a waveform of your sample.

Tapping a sample that’s playing now pauses it rather than restarts it (thanks Gavinski!)

And there’s further bug fixes and improvements, including one that was stopping Cache playback in Logic for iPad.

Thank you so much for the quick response and being an active part of this community. Hey, we all want you to succeed and make more money in exchange for fearures that will improve your app and your sales!

    That said, Favorites.

Favorites folders, favorited samples sort to top, favorite searches saved to folder. Some user determined color coding would help. That would be my number one feature that would make it rocket to the top of my useable, versitile apps.

    Again, thank you!

  • Using Cache on Mac i'm not able to add folders as a Collection. I can navigate through the filesystem, but the "Open" button of the dialog is always greyed out. Would be great to have such a nice sample browser also on the desktop.
    Thanks for the work, @lewisleval

    Sweet time to buy.

How reliable is the pitch detector?

It would be great if you could mark individual samples as favourites

That way uou can find them back easily.

Just marking it by clicking a star or heart symbol next to the sample.

    ok, i found the reason.

i muted system sound in the control center. now that it is on again i hear sound.

but does that mean the cache auv3 does not route audio through aum but directly plays through system sound?

i would rather have the sound going through aum because then i would be able to process the audio, what would be my use case here.

I don’t think it sends audio through aum, i don’t believe thats its main function. Its more for auditioning and organizing samples to be dropped into other Audio Units that loop or play or chop the sample up. Maybe im wrong, but you can use lots of apps, loopers, pads, slicers to play the audio in aum, aum has its own audio player, cache provides an easy way to quickly hear the sample, browse, select, and use in another au app.

yes true. but it's all there, why shouldn't it work that way? at least for me using it inside aum as a source of audio for processing was my intention for buying it.

also the app description does not imply that the audio does not go through the host, which would be very useful in my opinion.

i am not insisting that it has to be changed but i was surprised it is designed that way.

There must be something broken, because yeah, it didn't use to turn off audio when the iPad was on silent mode. That should absolutely be fixed. A few days ago I noticed that, with the previous version of the app, even when it was working normally, it stopped sending sound when the AUv3 window was closed. That's also not something that should happen imo @lewisleval. There was another app which had some of these issues called Archer's Player, and those issues were quickly remedied once pointed out, so hopefully the same will happen here.

  • Okay, so I finally bought Cache and I’m a bit confused.

Probably user error but when I press the add folder button, I am shown lots of audio files on my device under the Recent heading. The back and forward arrow icons next to Recent are greyed out and swiping in from the left side of the screen doesn’t open the navigation panel as per the Files app. I’m stuck on this Recents page.

How do I browse other locations on my device to find the folders I want to add? @lewisleval?

Right, I’ve discovered what I was doing wrong - I had my iPad in portrait orientation! In landscape orientation, the side navigation area is shown.

Is this a bug though @lewisleval? When in portrait, there doesn’t seem to be a way to access the navigation area and move from the currently shown location?

As I just posted, if I turn my device into landscape orientation, I see the regular Files app navigation area but nothing in portrait.

Hi there! Regarding the sound not going through AUM, it's simply because Cache needs an "excuse" to open inside a DAW, and letting DAWs recognise it as an audio effect was the simplest way to do that, so internally, it's not functioning as an actual audio effect, it has a totally different architecture. Cache is essentially an audio file browser (standalone) with an AUv3 extension that then uses everything the standalone has; so it's all the functionality of the standalone app in a format that DAWs will recognise.

I can definitely keep this in mind for potential future functionality, but for the time being the best I can recommend is to use Cache in the way that it works best, browsing, audioning and dragging samples, and then use a more dedicated app such as Elsa to actually play your sounds from and process. This way, your projects will maintain much more stability too.

Cache works best when treated like Logic's sample browser, or Koala's own sample import: you can browse and play samples, but can't do anything with them until they're actually loaded into the project.

Regarding the silent mode situation, that's my fault with the last update, but it will be fixed with the next one.

    Thank you for your support!

Hi there, may I ask which OS version you're using? Cache should be using your device's native files functionality, with navigation always available regardless of orientation. If it's a bug, I could try to replicate it on my end and see what's happening.

  • What a cool variety of apps this dev has out. Love the vibe of the stuff they make, especially the esoteric stuff (though I’ve never used them or have any need to haha).

  • @lewisleval have you tested with Google Drive? I can’t add folders.

  • @MMXXIV said:

    @lewisleval said:
So there's an update in review now, it usually takes Apple a couple of hours to approve.

The AudioShare situation ended up taking hours to solve. I wasn't able to add AudioShare, or anything inside AudioShare as a collection. Nothing was working, even though it looked like it was working from the screenshot I shared on Facebook.

After a good deal of research, I found that AudioShare uses an older model that doesn't allow direct, third-party path creation, which is what Cache needs. A new model came out with iOS 16, but it seems that the AudioShare devs haven't implemented it.

It took some time, but I found a smart workaround. I've now made it so that if you go into AudioShare, then tap and hold on a file or folder that you want Cache to have as a collection, then tap Export/Share, and select Cache from the row of available apps, it will open Cache and save the file or folder as a collection reference, without copying or duplicating the original item. So this workaround allows you to store anything from AudioShare in Cache under your collections, exactly as you'd want it to.

This will also work for any app, cloud storage, local storage or external storage that isn't letting Cache add collections using the standard in-app method.

Here's what's new in the update:

    • Added a search bar with scoped search and a Sort by option
    • Improved key detection
    • CACHE now supports and plays MIDI files
    • Added tap-to-download support for cloud-stored samples
    • Added loop playback
    • Sample duration is now displayed beneath audio samples
    • Added a workaround for saving collections from AudioShare and other cloud-drive apps

Any suggestions that I've received that aren't listed here, I'm currently still working on.

Great job Lewis, I bought this and Dark Park yesterday to show some support.

A question for you if I may, I’ve been looking for a lightweight file player that could play an hour long wav of brown noise (fades in and out) that would just stop at the end of the file and not drain any battery ie. Once I’m asleep. Have you inadvertently solved for that use case with this app too?

Is there a limit for the length of file being played, will the app keep playing the file once the screen is off/locked and put the other side of the room and, once it gets to the end, will the app just stop and sit in the background (overnight) not draining any battery?🤞

Thanks for creating two beautiful apps.

Thank you for the Background Audio update @lewisleval Very much appreciated

  • A quick question about the operations of this app. From my logical mind it appears as if this is only going to be beneficial in hosts that have the auv3 and the timeline viewable at the same time or in hosts like Loopy and AUM where you can have multiple open AUv3 windows open at the same time. I was thinking that in something like Cubasis you can drop the sample onto the timeline, but you wouldn’t be able to drop the sample directly into an instrument…and I’m thinking this would be the same in Logic Pro and in other apps like BM3 and Auria Pro you would be very limited in what you could achieve with this app. Is this a reasonable assessment?

Please do definitely consider making this pass audio through. It should be doable. The free app Archer's Player manages to do this, also without storing samples internally. It lacks some of the functionality of Cache though. AUM File Player is really not great, Cache could be a useful alternative choice. I would definitely have highlighted the fact it doesn't pass audio through in my video, as a negative, had I realized that at the time. Never even occurred to me that it wouldn't do that, tbh...
