Best Groovebox as of 4/2026
There was an older thread asking the same question, but a lot has happened since then.
My idea of minimum functionality criteria
Sample import
Onboard synth (and/or AUv3 access to synths)
“Groovebox workflow” (on the one hand if you know you know, on the other hand debateable)
Newer functionality criteria (new minimum?)
Automation
P-locks
Project export (not a rare function, but stems would be ideal)

If I used grooveboxes and a Launchpad I’d say GrooveRider 2. Battlestation is neat

Drambo all the way
I'd say both Drambo and Grooverider 2. Depending on what type of workflow you're looking for. (I used to be able to get on with GR-II, but a year later and it's a little frustrating for me to use personally, lol. Drambo looks like it could fit my Ambient workflow rather succinctly, but I still haven't quite wrapped my head around it.)

I'm a big fan of Groove Rider 2 and it keeps on getting better. I think it depends on the style of groove box you want. Groove Rider 2 is like an old school groove box like Roland or Korg. Very easy to use.
Not a groovebox, it’s a host.
I really like BAM. Could never get my head around Drambo.

Drambo and Gadget for me. Does Gadget count as a groovebox? To me it feels like one.
Pattern-based workflow, syncs to MIDI clock from Digitakt and Digitone, has synths and drums inside.
I still like the old Groove Rider as well!
What would you consider a modern Groovebox?
Probably a Digitak.
I don't know that it checks all the boxes, but Koala sampler at this point has a synth built in and you can lock your effects and all sorts of stuff. Mix it with AUM and you can sample your auv3's or add fx.
If you don't mind the limitations, Ableton Note give me a sort of random groovebox thing. I've recently started moving my demos to Live Lite and that gives my creations new life!
I have BAM and Drambo but I can't get my brain around them...

Speed and directness of a groovebox with a good overview of what’s going on, which I often miss with other grooveboxes (soft- and hardware).
Only one truth remains: Drambo.
I try many and always end up back at BM3. Only thing I do wish it had was more midi note manipulations (flip, octave +-, some rando etc.). Aside from that it never leaves me wanting much more.
Does EG Nodes count as a groovebox? If so, it’s definitely in the running.
egoist might be the first groovebox app that really gelled for me (and it's still killer imo) but how about patterning? there's so much flexibility in that one. you'd need a host to get auv3s in the mix (and more than 8 tracks) but i'm pretty sure we all have a few of those. it feels grooveboxy to me, anyway. plus, multiple instances. it's so good!
Oh yah, I looove Egoist, use it all the time. The slicer is fantastic.
Bam en Drambo always make me feel dumb. 😊
I got BAM as an intermediate step toward Drambo. A bit prone to crashing, but I like it fine and still use it occasionally. Then Drambo went on sale soon after and I just dived in. Drambo can get deep, but you only have to go as deep as a straight-ahead groovebox and ignore the rest.
Have never tried this, very interesting. DAWless production workflow, build your own box, not to mention it can host some of the above boxes too.

Is Nodes stable?
Pretty much so was on the beta helping the dev a lot when it first came out. I never had many crashes or freezes with it if at all. It’s still supported just not developed any further from what I gather.
