There's no limiter or ability to load effects (yet). You can normalize the audio though after recording, and if you are using iPhone there's a built-in auto-gain feature unless you select Measurement mode from the audio settings.
If things go well, I might eventually add the ability to load AUv3, but it's not a priority and not the focus or direction I wanted for this app, so I can't guarantee it.
No fade in/out yet, but it's actually a nice idea indeed. I'll try to implement it.
I can have an option to disable the pre-roll/buffer recording, but as long as you don't long press/swipe up the record button you won't notice it.
Actually I'd argue that being able to set the length of the pre-roll buffer could be handy in case one misses to hit record

Is it possible for the playback of a file to show on the dB meter(s)?
Also, in 'edit' when zooming in, could the Start/End selectors stay at the edges of the waveform view - to save having to zoom back out and drag them?
+1 for the fade in/out - maybe they could be 'draggable' from the 'S' 'E' selectors.
I do have a feeling this will be refined prior to release and who knows maybe the next few betas will include
(Personally I'm quite 'picky' when it comes to waveform navigation, making selections etc.).
Love it .. it’s already found a spot on my home screen.
One of my use-cases for it is to grab samples on the go using either built-in mic, usb-mic (iRig Mic HD) or a USB Audio interface.
The noise reduction in particular works very well to clean up recordings and having basic filtering present is also super handy!
(Just a few seconds ago I grabbed a few samples using an AudioTechnica USB Record Player hooked to the iPhone).

I had a play with it this morning. It’s a very nice design. A ton of useful functionality in an efficient gui. AudioShare is my go to editor. The only thing I currently do with AudioShare that I don’t think could be done with field is trimming loops. But this is a field recorder so I don’t see that as a limitation of field.
And to clarify, noise reduction works differently with field than AS. With AS/brusfri you’re filtering noise when recording via insert effect. Withe field it’s done as a post recording process without need for third party app
i’ll be signing up for the public beta to test, but wondering if true stereo recording is available with the iPhone in landscape orientation? Just curious if this could be used as a stereo field recorder using the built-in mics.

I really appreciate the interface. It's more inviting for me than fieldscaper. The layout's super clean and the note section is great.
Easy to recall recordings and samples to playlist(sessions).
Recording was stable while playing back audio which was awesome. Curious about the screen saver does that bypass the audio and reduce full battery or is just a pause screen? I assume the later.
It was nice being able to record random sounds and edit them enough to slap them in Booga. Recorded some keys jingling, bike horn, pills shaking, fun stuff.
You can pitch sounds into crazy territories. I ended up with this kinda waveform:

The query about "Could the Append button be like Record, On Append/OffAppend" was more about the 2 different record modes. Record starts a new session, but the append would be handy if it functioned like the record (record on/off) the only difference being one appends, one ends the recording. Rather than having the stop append being a separate control. It would then function like Record, just a different outcome.
How about the disable autosave. Sometimes it gets a bit much having to go back and delete all the unfavourable takes.
Great app! It would be amazing if you could program the following settings:
1) enable/disable: right after recording display the edit of the name of the file
2) customize standard file names

@audiothing, a solution which would allow indirect internal recording would be if Field included AU instrument (for playback) and AU effect (for recording) plugin versions. Plus, having those versions available would introduce lots of other benefits as others have pointed out throughout this thread.
I like this a lot. Probably will replace my old school process (first it was audioshare but then I reverted to apple’s voice memos, for my usage it was perfectly fine)
Does this allow long recordings (I mean like 30 min) and is there a way to zoom in and cut precise zero crossing loops to export?

Oh, great point regarding zero crossing points - a ‘snap to zero crossing’ option would be great (if it’s not doing it all the time already).
I can cut it by hand (actually prefer that way, provided there’s enough zoom) but if this was a feature a little fade in fade out to avoid clicks at the seams would also be welcomed. Not that there’s shortage of apps that could do that, but for a self-contained field recorder it could be very helpful
Yes, landscape mode will not change the mics selected so it will keep recording in stereo.
Thank you! It's more of a "privacy" screen if you don't want to show that you are recording. Alghouth that would also work if you just switch app, Fields will keep recording in background.
Ahaha I've never seen this! Although there is a bug in the current pitch shift algorithm, might be that, not sure

The reason I have not included the arm + record (default behavior in my Zoom H4n) and forced the auto save is that I lost so many recordings in the past, I don't want to risk it. You can long tap on a recording to enter multi-select, so it should be easier to select multiple recordings to delete.

Not at the moment, but I'm planning to add support for aiff, flac, and possibly mp3.
The max I tried was 10 min, but I don't see why it would fail with longer times. This is still a beta though, so before release I will run all the necessary tests with longer recordings as well.
You can zoom in but there's no zero crossing cutting yet.

I’ve been using AudioShare since it came out, but I’m frustrated by its file system: most things are possible, but some important things are tedious.
I will buy Fields for what it is, a recorder. But if it can import, export, and organize files too — even better.
Import & Export is no problem and everything is also accessible via Files.app.
If you already have a bunch of files in a folder You wish to edit copy the folder into the Recordings folder in the Fields folder using Files.app. (The copy of the folder takes no additional storage thanks to APFS).
Naturally there's also the option to import files one-by-one, create folders and move the files around etc.
I think not complex in the slightest. Press record to record, press record to stop. Press append to Append, press Append to stop. It seems natural to me. The reason I suggested it is because I keep using it that way and miss that fact that Record stops Record AND Append. I keep accidentally tapping Append to stop the Append function then remember or see I have to hit Record to stop Append.

I really liked that it pulls the playlist from iCloud. I was field recording on my phone and later launched my iPad and my phone session populated automagically. Simple i reckon, but not many of my apps do that.
