@audiothing Love this already, can't wait to grab it in the app store. One issue: Toggling input bypass appears to stop the rolling buffer and waveform display. My expectation is that toggling input back to "on" would restart the buffer and display.

It should indeed restart the display/recording buffer. If it doesn't maybe something else is wrong. If you go to the Audio Settings do you see the input selected?

There was no input selected after toggling input back to on, and selecting an input did restart the buffer. Here's the odd thing: the act of manually selecting an input in the audio settings after triggering the bug seems to have fixed it.

During onboarding I granted mic permissions, etc. and the buffer/recording features worked as expected with the exception of this toggle bug. I didn't touch input/output settings until your suggestion and now the bug has disappeared.

I can reproduce this behavior by deleting the app and reinstalling through TestFlight, though once I manually select the input it's a non repro. If it's helpful I can email a video capture.

No, the opposite (if I understand you right). The microphone delivers two channels, channel one is the mid, channel two the side signal. This is what we want to bring “to tape”. But for monitoring and playback this should be converted to stereo.

Yep that's possible, I'll add it in the next build.

This is good news! Thank you and have success with this nice app … 😎

Interesting, I'll have a look then, next build will probably have a guard for that and also try to "force" stereo, as it seems some iPhone models default to mono.

  • This is the last I'll say on it. Record: Doesn't matter so much where pause stop are as I hit record, hands back from device and when I'm done hit pause stop whatever wherever it is, Append: Might want half a second so a quick double tap, leaving my finger hovering over the same (essentially) on/off Append button.

  • Very nice, functional design.

It’s good to be able to attach notes and photos so easily, but it’s also easy to forget in the field.

    Could you add auto geo-tagging?

  • @audiothing, any chance of being able to set the fade in/out times? Long press on the Fade In/Out buttons to open the option?

It fades between where the markers are set. Is it something more you want?

Ah, nope that would cover my needs - I only tried it on a short clip so I wasn’t aware that’s what it was doing, I thought it just had preset lengths. Thanks for enlightening me @Ailerom.

  • Just tried Fields combined with Funky Pipe Pro the 2 work hand in hand for field recording then sharing to desktop iPad etc. Both apps highly recommended.

No problem. I tried fading a longer recording and when I saw the ice cream cone from start to finished it was pretty clear.

Yes, I was planning to add this.

  • This might be beyond the scope of the app, but would absolutely love this:

A way to snap selections to 16th notes of a defined BPM (manually entered) - basically just an optional grid that makes it easy to trim samples to precise, specific lengths.

  • New beta:

    • added geotagging and map browsing
    • added hardware gain (where supported)
    • added mid/side playback
    • improved zoomed waveform
    • improved recording stopped by call behavior
    • improved gain level now goes to -inf dB
    • fixed muting input issue

I’m aiming to release Fields next month, so from now on I’ll focus only on stability and bug fixes. I won’t be adding any new features unless they are absolutely necessary for the release.

Thank you very much for all the feedback!

  • @audiothing can the recordings be renamed? Am I missing something obvious?

Slide left and tap this button:

  • @audiothing the pre-roll buffer setting doesn’t seem to have any effect, what exactly should be happening?

It sets the length of pre-recorded buffer that you can "save" by holding the record button and swiping up.

Ah, thanks, I hadn’t realized there was a gesture

I’ve been trying to field record my local birds for 30 years in FieldScaper to no avail. I’ve gotten a butt ton of bird recordings from this critter and making instruments in mighty synth with them. Very very cool. Thanks again for this. Using these samples in Mighty Synth/Spacewalk has allowed me to create some really trippy ambientscapes. Being able to slow it down to such extreme levels really gets you lost in the sound.

  • Does the slide up gesture instantly grace the pre roll or is it meant to start recording, adding to the pre roll, or losing part of the pre roll as it records?

The pre roll buffer is always running in the background while Fields is monitoring the incoming audio.
When you use the slide up gesture to start recording, Fields instantly includes the audio currently stored in the pre roll buffer, based on your pre roll settings (5 to 20 seconds).

    Really nice!

  • @audiothing, it would be really useful if double tap on hardware gain reset it to its default so you could safely know you’ve got it back at the normal level.

    Yep good idea.

  • I hope this isn’t taken wrong… but what unique capability does this app offer over other field recording apps out there?

This is widely discussed on first page of this thread.

    My take:
Maybe nothing actually unique, but built in noise reduction may be close. Other than that, probably just that it provides a good workflow that may be preferable to alternatives.

Completely pertinent question to ask and very difficult to answer. Lots of good recording apps and some of them are free. As @hes says, the noise reduction is very good and like a built in Brusfri but then again Dolby On is very good for noise reduction too. Being able to quickly apply pitch and speed changes to the whole clip or a selected part of it is nice for immediate creative editing too.

It’s nicely designed and I guess it just depends on whether it happens to fit with your workflow and click with you or not? Personally, I like it but whether I buy it will completely depend on the price when it’s released.
