This thread gives me flashbacks to Fugue Rubato - lots of complaining about price for 3+ pages and then actual discussion. Also, it’s funny how some threads end up being an announcement and then any questions branch off into new threads, or the original post becomes the mega thread. Grooverider 2 comes to mind there- 90% of questions seem to be asked in the OP.
No real point to be made I guess. Just observations.
I spoke to @AnalogMatthew about the crackles in no. 2.
I first had it when first playing Everything IIRP using the first Kid A patch when you’re playing 6-7 notes at the same time.
Hopefully all these issues can be sorted with all the useful info building up in this thread.
Appreciate your reply and help thanks 👍🏼
Audio Kit is in my top 5 iOS developers. Thanks for the great work!
Thanks for getting the info to the dev. I can confirm that, in mono mode, the occasional note slips thru and plays duophonically. I can't reproduce it consistently tho. I also noticed that in mono mode, with legato off (and low cutoff and high amp release) I get the click/pop on each overlapping note, even if its just 1 note ringing out.
Analogue-style voice stealing is exactly what is needed here, which in mono mode is monosynth behaviour. “Simply” only use voice 1 and don’t reset the envelope accumulator.
What exactly you mean with "anaogue-style voice stealing" ? Can you be more speciffic / more technical ? Especialyl in terms of DSP impementatin.
I brieffly understand what is happeing in analog HW - they have just hard-set number of voice boards so "stealing" basically means that board cuts previously played voice and starts new one - some analogs DO click more, some less, some almost no - that depends on how fast capacitors which were driving envelope of stolen voice are discharged .. Basically hardware "fade out" .. In case I am completely wrong then correct me.
If it is like I wrote above - then in DSP code - it just mean very small few ms fade out and fade in on SAME voice (unlike the concept i mentionaed where you allocate few hidden voices for stolen voices to "die" with fade) ?
Cause if you mean this.. I don't think this exactly is behavior which makes sense to identically replicate in DSP code. Like yeah, I am totally for reproducing instabilities, unpredictability in oscillators tuning, filters funning, envelope times small randomness, maybe even some VCA noise at some level - but especially this one particular detail I always prefer just to use advantages of DSP code and get rid of this problem completely in modern way ...
Keep tapping away with two notes and some will be played together. It’s not consistent though so doesn’t happen every time, and could also depend on other settings in the patch.
I think @DePingus has confirmed the behaviour above
Just got home from a 3 hour flight.
Passed my time starring presets as favorites to come back to.
Got back to see there was an update that included Twin Peaks themed presets from Jade Starr.
Just happen to be re-watching Twin Peaks right now. What a treat.
Thanks for the great app and intro price @AnalogMatthew.
I can, but there’s an issue of time to write it up… so a quick sketch:
A classic analogue envelope is a capacitor being charged and discharged. The applied voltage (target) depends on the phase of the envelope. Approach to the target with be logarithmic (ish) though switching voltage must practically be before target otherwise infinite stage length. So starting with the capacitor voltage v at 0V in release phase (idle) a gate will switch to attack phase (target 5.a bit V) when v reaches switching level 5V phase progresses to decay (target -0.a bit V) and so on.
My digital implementation was by finite difference i.e. calculate v1 from v0, change will be proportionate to the distance from target = capacitor charging simulation, also equivalent to a digital 1-pole low pass filter. Then the stage switching logic is added around this.
There are of course many other ways to skin a cat
I am against.
Understand.. that makes sense .. I can see if you want to make trully faithfull analog emulation this approach makes much more sense that my pool of reserved fade out voices (which is what i thnk Serum/Vital are doing) ..
The fade out thing would be typical for a ROMpler and/or when multi-timbral voice allocation is needed.
I can't claim to know anything about the original synth, but I can say that for me, the Pro-A5 has the largest collection of immediately inspiring and usable presets I've found in an iOS synth app in recent history. Very excited to dig in with this.
Seems like everyone had Prophet 5 and/or a DX7 starting in the late 70's (Prophet) and through the 80's and beyond. I was there! 😁😎✌🏼 And you're right about the A5. I have found it very inspiring.
Prophet 5 was pretty expensive right?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prophet-5
I just purchased it and you're right, it sounds amazing. It's hard to believe it's not analog. It has an Incredible sound and filter!

@AnalogMatthew has asked for bug reports to go to matthew at audiokitpro dot com
I’m gonna see if I can send a summary of what’s in this thread, but I’m sure he’d appreciate everyone’s suggestions for bugs and potential fixes. There’s some really great detail here I which I think I would want to hear if I was the dev.
Yeah it is ! That is what i call excellent job on analog modelling DSP code .. absolutely flawless. And if you ever reach some aliasing artifact with some extreme modulations and screaming resonance just crank up oversampling in plugin settings
Check also their Nord Lead 2 emulation.. it's not totally perfect but i woul say it's 90% close to her real HW (which os one of best sounding VA synths ever made). Also totally supperior DSP coding job on filters, oscillatros, FM modulation, LFOs... Absolutely legendary.
.
I see that DiscoDSP has OB-Xd and OB-Xd 3. Are these the same or is OB-Xd 3 an updated version? Are there significant differences?
i don’t know what differences are but I guess they will be not major .. maybe UI improvements, small things here and there, stuff like that ..
Core of synth engine itself was not made by DiscoDSP - it’s years old synth which they just bough from other guy who made it, so I don’t think they did significant changes in code .. (I am just guessing though)
Ah ha! Maybe OB-Xd shows up in AppStore because I already have that? New customers would only see OB-Xd 3? I’ll search for a thread…
Yes. App was sold and overhauled. I already had it so didn’t read the 2024 thread. Incase anyone else is curious, this was the gist of it: (or just read the thread)
“New High-Quality Engine: The iOS version now incorporates the same high-quality digital signal processing (DSP) engine as the OB-Xd 3 Desktop version…
Cross-Platform Compatibility: Full compatibility with desktop presets and banks across macOS, Windows, and Linux. Users can now effortlessly transfer presets…
MIDI Keyboard Enhancements: The update introduces a fully functional standalone MIDI keyboard, now supporting a custom 2-octave layout…
User Interface Overhaul: The user interface has been completely redesigned with a new skin created by Ilkka Rosma, offering a modern, visually appealing design that aligns with the desktop version. This update not only enhances aesthetics but also improves navigation and usability. Icons and UI elements have been resized to adhere to iOS guidelines, ensuring a clean and consistent look on all screen sizes, including larger iPad models. Dialogs and menus have been specifically optimized for touch interaction on iOS devices.
Enhanced Functionality: Significant improvements have been made to the bank and preset management system,”
Some of the criticism of Pro A5 seems somewhat over the top up me. I'm sure OB-Xd 3 is great, but it's currently four times the price of Pro A5!
I have Repro and it's a great synth. Never had the hardware so I don't know how accurate either of them are but I do think Pro A5 sounds really good. The Lead presets, in particular, take you into sonic territory I've not heard from other IOS synths.
Tera Pro will remain my go-to general purpose synth because of it's flexibility and Zeeon is probably still top of the Analogue emulation tree but Pro A5 is a lot of fun for a fiver.
I don't think many prospective purchasers will be disappointed...
It would be helpful if we could somehow lock the tabs, as I keep on hitting them way too frequently to get the right settings back on one page, it’s confusing sometimes.
