  • @Bluepunk: Thanks for the compliment! :) Yes the vocals were double-tracked. I actually sung/recorded them twice rather than copying and pasting. I managed to stay in time for most of it, I think! ;)
Copying a vocal track, pasting it and then shifting it forwards or backwards a tiny amount to avoid phasing issues can also be a useful technique to be aware of that avoids having to sing a track twice!

Looking forward to your first track! :)

  • Thanks for listening and commenting @AlterEgo_UK - your quite right about the breakdown - it needs bit more tweaking, but I can't really do it in Gadget - really wish it provided additional fx on the channels, especially eq and compression (oh and side chaining :) )

  • Cheers @bluepunk ! Chuffed you liked it :)

  • Cheers @LostBoy85 could Abu Dhabi doing some gliching or Dublin doing the trippy bass

  • @richardyot are you going to be updating the track listing on the front page soon?

  • @JohnyGoodyear Don't You Worry is brilliant - I love the how you the song starts with some keys and then drifts into some background electronica drone while you sing quietly over the top, it projects some sort of intimacy which really hooked me in. Nice one.

Glitch in the matrix, I updated it last week but my edits weren't saved - fixed, and I've also added the latest.

    Awesome, thanks.

  • 72 hours (give or take) left in this July that will then be gone forever. Good time to gag the children, put the coffee on and finish a song....

Off topic - just for the love of music, and of great songwriting.

Bob Schneider, the best songwriter you never heard of.

Perhaps Johnny heard of him cause he is also from Austin (if I remember this correctly).

    Bob Schneider - Montgomery.

  • Thanks @richardyot

    Catching up...

@Jocphone - Nil by Transport Clan:

Nice experimental track. I really like the first half. It's less good in the second half IMO.

Love the scratchy bassline that runs through it. Is that Chicago? I like the space given in the track, things build slowly and subtley.

The change up to the second part of the track happens at about the right time for me. And I was hoping for something really interesting / and or groovy (there's a good groove in the first half). It's just that the second part feels weaker - there's some drums and it slightly peters out. That what I remember.

Hope that's helpful. Enjoyed it and a love the first half particularly.

  • @TyburnTech - Informal Informer

That's s great track. Remarkable and inspiring that's it's all Gadget. Sounds very pro.

It's very assured. I love plucked sounding bassline that starts early on. Dublin?

And I really love the scratching style hook? What you feeding Abu with to get that out? It's excellent!

I also love the fact that's is techno but it's very funky. All in all very good.

I guess the only suggestion might be that after the second break I was hoping for something slightly more varied / new / dramatic for the climax.

I like the striped back ending though.

    Looking forward to more!

Thanks for the comments Matt. Would love to lose the 'experimental' badge at some point ;)

The bass is three synths. Chiang Mai for the main tone, Darwin for a bit of attack and Miami for the scratchy overtone. Been playing with making fuller sounds by stacking up the the same notes with different synths/textures. I do think the slower build allows the listener some time to, well, listen I guess.

Yeah, both @monzo and yourself commented on the second half being a little weak. I had to rush it out the door before my hols. Or so I thought. I have another version and a couple more days so I might post a more complete version if I get time.

Yep, it's all helpful. Thanks again

  • Hey thanks for kind words @Matt_Fletcher_2000 ! I loaded some pro samples into Bilao to get the tech sound on the drums - I guess that helped a lot with the sound ;)

  • Abu Dhabu just has a very simple spoken phrase, then I pitched it a round a bit and it came out sounding not too bad

  • Nice. @TyburnTech - the Abu stuff is very cool. Would be interested to know what you think of my track (now on the homepage) if/when you have a moment - since we're both making 'dance music' with Gadget.

  • So, before July is over I wanted to put the new baby down and listen to the rest of these tracks. You Gadget guys are killing me! I haven't completed a whole song in Gadget yet, and you guys are cranking them out!

@Igneous1I thought this was a really good track. It has a really jazzy, synth pop feel to me in the flow. There are a great variety of synths throughout the track, and I really like the percussion fills that are throughout the song.

@Jocphone This was really surprising to me, in a good way! Very noisy and experimental and different from what a lot of Gadget tracks I hear. That bass is crazy, cool that you used three synths for it. What kind of iPad do you have? My three would explode with three bass synths.

@Matt_Fletcher_2000 Great job! The mix in this sounds superb and really pro to me. I like the use of Orphion, it has a very unique sound, but fits in well in your track. The drums in this are crazy, do you program, perform, or both.

@TyburnTech Really nice production on this one. this is not really my style, but I can really appreciate all the little nuances throughout the song.I really like the vocal atmospherics throughout,

    Great job everyone!

  • Thanks @BvsMV - I normally program the basic kick / snare and a hats pattern. Then I also program variations for the kick and the snare.

But for percussion over the top, a second snare, toms or whatever I've been "performing" in DrumJam and sending the midi to Gadget. I love doing this.

However I did the drums on this particular track quite a long time ago so I think they are all just programmed. Oh and there's a sampled and chopped 'vintage' break in there too.

@LostBoy85 your link doesn't work as it is, you need to remove the /edit bit at the end.

Anyway, yours is always one of the entries that I look forward to the most, and it's nice to hear a change of mood this time, this month is less SA&W than last time :)

The verse melody isn't really as catchy as other stuff you have posted, the chorus is much better and is also really helped by the vocal harmonies. The singing is as good as always, really strong vocals.

Some interesting changes in the song, and the lyrics are great (as usual). I think my overall impression is that this song has a really good catchy chorus but is slightly let down by the verse melody which just isn't as strong.

Anyway, really looking forward to hearing what you do next.

  • @LostBoy85 POP MUSIC I TELL YOU! Summer nights, beaches, wide open skies, young love, snogging.

I sense you are a lucky happy person you bastard. And you have the ear for the hook, the harmony, and have got the voice to pull it off. Not my sort of artichokes, but of their sort a good and faithful effort.

Especially for singing in your Morris Minor.

I think we're going to have to kidnap you, make you work in the cotton fields for three months, lose the girl of your dreams, go on a week-long blind-drunk binge, wake-up in a cold country cell, and then sing about it at 80 beats per minute.

Scare the children and make the horses cry. You have it in you.

  • Man,I'm an idiot! Thanks for pointing that out Richard...well not the idiot bit but u know what I mean:)
Thanks for your comments Johnny & Richard. Hey Richard, who remembers verses anyway right??:D just kidding! I'm glad you like the chorus that's the main thing & hey Johnny it's a Robin Reliant mate not a Morris Minor!!:D cheers guys!

  • You've been added to the post on the first page. Get writing next month's one now :)

  • @LostBoy85 Moaira Sky. Great song that is swirling around inside my head hitting all the right bits. Catchy, infectious chorus. Well played, sung, mixed & mastered. What's not to like? You've written a feel good positive summer vibe. A massive thumbs up from me.

Did you use a mic or just through the iPads into Vocal live? If, and it's a big if, I try to sing/talk on my first SOTMC entry, it may save my hidden cash stash. Thanks.

  • Hey @Bluepunk thanks very much! It's always nice to hear that other people like your stuff:D swirling around in your head eh? Job done! Thanks a lot!
Now to your question..Due to a lack of funds myself I have learned to just use the internal mic on the iPad (not ideal but hey my wife likes shiney things!!) into vocalive.I don't sing directly into the mic I kind of hold the iPad up and sing to the flat screen, this is to eliminate heavy breaths distorting some words when too close. Also if u do use vocalive (especially in iaa modes) u have to go into the settings (vocalive) and switch noise reduction on,u need to do this every time u open your DAW so that u don't waste takes like I have in the past:) Don't be shy about doing a vocal track mate. This is a great & safe/friendly place to try out new stuff!:D right now onto my gangsta rap anthem!!! Haha!

  • Proof again (again) that material beats the machinery. To say nothing of the fact that thinking and doing is better than just thinking. Spit it out @Bluepunk, blood on the page!

  • @LostBoy It really is a great song & the quality of your recording sounded prime to me.
Especially the vocals & to hear that you sang into the internal mic only, has really made my day.

No mic? I wonder how many listeners would know that! Not too many I guess & that's why I had to ask. Also, your car is the perfect vocal booth! Will you ever be able to sell it? Different car could mean different ambience? :)

Thanks for the technical advice & luckily I had already downloaded Vocal Life & those tips you give are much appreciated. I'm looking forward to your next "gansta rap" tune, sounds cool.

@JohnnyGoodyear Absolutely correct Sir. Material beats Machine is a great saying & LostBoy's song shows it. Like I said in my thoughts on your song "Don't you worry," like your country twang voice. Yep, I'm going for it, all guns (they're sagging a bit now with age) blazing. Now....whose car can I sing in? :)

  • edited August 2015

Haha!! @BluePunk I can say with 100% certainty that me rapping will never sound cool!!:D Nah il leave rapping to the experts...like...er...John Barnes!! 'Loves got the world in motion' baby!! Haha!! (Sorry,90's UK reference:D ) as for cars "I've got me a Chrysler it seats about twenty...so hurry up and bring your duke box money!" (Double sorry! Equally shit reference!:D) Thanks for your kind words about my track man and I look forward to hearing yours in the future!

Also just to clarify,I would use a proper mic if I could,it has taken me a little while & lots of mistakes to learn me & the internal mic!:)

  • @LostBoy haha John Barnes!!! I remember it well, for the 1990 World Cup. Mind, better him than Peter Beardsley. Now that would have been interesting to hear him rap in his Geordie accent.

When & if you do get a mic, have you one in mind? Just had a brief look. That new iRig Mic Studio (used with their Vocal Live app) looks tasty but pricey and just like apps, there's so many choices out there!

Ps just come back from the car show room after vocal booth testing the range of Nissans they had in stock. It's probably my voice but too much echo in most of them. :) I'd stick with your Robin Reliant! Now, where's that Auto trader magazine gone! :)

  • @lostboy @bluepunk I have this feeling that the reverb app boys will be putting out IR packs for different car models any day now....
