Upgrade to Auria Pro or buy into Cubasis ?

i bought into Auria when it was released, but always struggled with it on my ipad2 16Gb and therefore didn't spend any time with it. Now with a new Air2 128Gb and waiting for more than the last year on the Pro upgrade, I've seen everyone with Cubasis, using it to achieve what I needed to do with Auria. Now, nearly a year late (Spring 2015) with another Cubasis update imminent, does Auria do what was promised/expected (for the update price) or should I abandon Auria 2.0 and chip into the Cubasis workflow?
i don't want to spend £30 updating Auria if Cubasis is the better choice for the same money (roughly).
Any of you guys using both able to compare? Thx

  • I bought Cubasis back in June while waiting for Auria Pro. Cubasis has it's quirks, and the infamous "undo bug" which they still have no idea how to fix. I'm leaning more towards binning Cubasis and buying Auria Pro next month if the next Cubasis update doesn't fix it's current issues. If there are any issues with Auria Pro, it's more than likely that Rim will take care of them rather quickly. I can't say the same for Steinberg unfortunately.
  • I have MTS, Cubasis, Auria Pro,

I gurantee you, you will be satisfied that Auria Pro with Timeless2 together! If you have extra, Pro Q2 next.

Auria Pro, hands down. It's a no-brainer, since you have an Air. No offense meant, but when I saw the title, I thought it was a joke topic, hehehe...

    Thanks folks.
@Kaikoo, Pro-Q owner, and am always very impressed with the Timeless and Saturn videos.

I'm on holiday for another week with poor wifi, I'll watch for Doug's other Pro vids, keep an eye on comments here and probably pull the trigger on arrival home.
  • pro pro pro!  i removed cubasis, never to return.  Auria Pro is hands down the best.
  • I wish there was an app Ebay of some sort to allow us to resale used apps and apple could still make money. That would be so cool and we can recycle that cash and buy some more....and apple could charge us again..

    Anyone thought of that?

  • Auria Pro. It's the new (first) pro standard that the others will now need to beat. Some of the ohers, Garageband, etc. who have Mac and pc desktop versions, want you to head there to finish your project "professionally" and therefore restrain their ios versions in various ways. They now have to compete with a fully pro ios DAW. Apple competes unfairly because their bottom line is selling computers and don't have to be profitable on the software itself like everyone else.

Does not matter which DAW good results depend on the skill of the end user.
  • Auria Pro, especially if you're on an Air 2 and already own some plugins.
  • Perhaps, show me ur skill?

    I succumb.

I suppose your talking to me I didn't say I was skilled but I have seen skilled people make good track in both DAWs.
but since your calling me out.

some ios tracks as well as more tradional multitrack recording.

    WTF?

This is very helpful. I'll just buy the cheapest DAW I can find and continue to churn out the drivel. :)

There is definitely some truth in this. There is always the temptation to believe that what you need is the next DAW / synth / drum app or whatever - over many years, I have grown to accept that I still write similar material, no matter the tools.  Having said that, if you want the DAW which will give you maximum fleibility in routing, mixing, effects, etc, then Auria Pro offers that more than any other IOS app - at least at the moment!

Thats why I use MTDAW  cheap and lets me turn out my drivel quickly. I have Auria 1.x and Cubasis as well but  both were to hard on my poor  iPad 3. I just bought an iPad air 2 128 gb the other day so I may upgrade after all the smoke clears.  But my statement about the DAWs not mattering is TRUE on the Desktop level so I believe it to be so on ios as well.

True, this is a huge factor in terms of results.  The amount of time these results take is my priority.

Lmfao I was thinking the same thing today when I another Auria plugin (I shouldn't have)

I realized how many apps I had I don't use or have been replaced. If they could be sold and Apple makes like 1 bucks off $5 apps and 2 for $10 etc I think it could work.

    Great minds think a like

I understand the thrust of this ("Bob Marley with some rubber bands and a cigar box would write better songs than you Johnny!"), and also agree it can be a dangerous idea to believe that with the next release of whatever all will be well in the garden, BUT gear of any kind that helps realize the sound and perhaps more importantly facilitates the transport of said sound from brain to another's ear can be said to be better or worse. So, yeah, sorry, disagree, it can matter and it often does matter.

Yah I didn't think I was in the 'rubber band / Bob Marley camp'...  my point was more along the lines of do I want to spend a hundred hours on a track or ten. heh.  The one that gives me the same (or yes, better) results for a tenth the time wins my vote.  So yes it is totally about facilitating transport as you put it.  I could sit in Cubasis with the slicer tool and painstakingly chop and grind or just use audio warp in Auria Pro and bam done.  That was more my point.
  • I like Cubasis. I can't use Auria anyway since I'm running on iPad 3s, and the Auria Pro site recommends 4 or later. The sequencing I do is usually in Gadget, and I use Cubasis to arrange live recordings anyway, so I don't gain much by switching over because I'm content. It's been nice to me. I get the enthusiasm for the awesome stuff Auria Pro seems to do. That's an awful lot of memory to eat up to have both.

  • I have Cubasis but never use it.

I bought MTS recently and really like a lot about it.

I've also just bought Auria Pro (do you see a pattern here?) and am going to give it s good go as an 'all in one' DAW for a few tracks at least. The new synths are lovely. It seems to also work pretty well combining midi out and IAA back in (no big latency issues) - or simply just synced IAA in from drum machines/groove boxes. Having Turnado on board and some of the FF plug ins is pretty great.

My personal opinion is that the bread and butter usability of the piano roll and the automation lanes could do with some improvements since that's where it all happens when composing (as opposed to arranging).

  • I am a regular user of Cubasis. I have Auria (the previous version) but could never get to grips with it. However, some of the quaint features of Cubasis are doing my head in (as we say in these parts). Such as the adding of loads of extra space when mixing down, making the filesize at least 3 times as large as it needs to be, some timing issues when fellow collaborators import my shared stems, track names becoming corrupted when moving tracks around and sometimes audio clips getting a non-unique name and losing their actual audio on playback because they are playing the audio from the other clip with the same name!

But I have stuck with it as most of the time it works well, I know how to achieve most of what I want to achieve and I find it fits my workflow.

Now Auria can record midi, I am thinking maybe I can record with fewer niggles but still not entirely convinced I will be able to get used to the way Auria works. One thing that might sway me though is if Auria can split imported midi files into separate tracks for each channel and even more important, export separate midi files for each track. Yes I can don't hating Cubasis but only by copying and pasting each midi track into a new project and mixing down the single track to midi. If I mix down to midi in a full project, with all tracks muted except the midi track I want to export, it always exports the midi from all the midi tracks even if they are muted.

Can an anyone tell me for sure that Auria Pro can export separate midi tracks from a project?  Thanks.
  • Most DAWs are complex, because they are designed to do many tasks. The only way we personally find the right DAW for us as individuals is by trial and error. Once we find one that has a feeling it may be the one, that's when the study starts. Only by putting in the time, does our choice of DAW become more connected to our musical vision

As iOS DAWs become more fully featured, the learning curves will grow and changing will become more problematic.

To the question, which DAW? Too complex for us to answer. Only you will find the right fit. It's very early days for iOS DAWs.

Good performance from talented musicians. Yes, I give +1002.

People here in this thread is to buy a DAW, remember the objectivity of this thread. It is not here for those who do not care about buying decisions! Sorry, I know you all are skillful!

Disagree to some extent. You even mentioned MultitrackDAW.Sorry but how can i even get this to communicate with my other apps without Midi? And it doesn't even deliver own sounds.Probably you can say that about your style of making music but you can't say this generally.Has nothing to do with skills here. Not at all.

I've been waiting/wondering as to your thoughts in this (for you) a post-MTS world...

  • If the process of creating music is chain of steps with each being dependent upon the previous step, I think it's safe to say you'd want good instruments, playing, composing, and mastering and that the quality of the final result will be determined by the weakest link in this chain. By the same token, just because this process is linear, it doesn't mean your approach to learning all aspects has to be or that you even have to master any of them to engage in the process. I would think some knowledge, education, and practice on these topics can be helpful but certainly no guarantee of quality results you'll be happy with.

I think learning more can at least put you in a position where you can ask more relevant questions when evaluating the suitable of a DAW for what you're trying to create if for no other reason than you'll have a clearer idea of what it takes to do so.
  • cubasis is a fine app but the truth is that auria pro will beat the hack of it, i have both app and lately working mainly with cubasis but the last update of auria is superbe, meanwhile the piano roll and piano/drum pad needs some tweeking in auria asap.
