So is it a standalone AND AU? Or AU only?

There is a standalone mode with CoreMIDI input for when you feel like tinkering without going into a big DAW ;)

The standalone version is actually a miniature AU Host, loading its own plugin.

Thank you for pretending that my question wasn't laziness that could EASILY be resolved by reading the damn App Store description. Lazy me.

    Sounds neat.

No worries about price here, this comes from @brambos whose pedigree we know :) Shhhh don't tell him, but I'd pay more ;)

Oh, I tried to be clear... I'm in no way whatsoever critiquing the price at all. I don't do that. I either feel it's worth it for me and buy, or I don't.

It's just that I've bought a few apps in this price range lately and I like to make sure it's something I'll use first. My "instabuy" level is South of $5 if it looks cool. If it's over that, I at least watch some demos and ask a few questions to evaluate whether it's a good fit for me or not.

    Nothing wrong with that :)

Was just trying to get you to 'Jump In' :)

    IPad only?

    Bummer.

I just bought this app and with being a big fan of FM synths I am loving it. However, my only criticism is that chorus effect doesn't really work as I don't hear what chorus is supposed to do like make the sound warmer and fatter. Anyway congrats on this synth as it great to finally get a 6 operator FM synth for the iPad.

Is there a way to export your own saved banks without need for a computer? I love programming sounds, but need the security of getting them to my google drive or Dropbox etc

For now iTunes only, so not without a computer. It can be done in a future update if there is a lot of demand for such a feature.

    >

Arghhhhhhh. iTunes. Worst thing Apple ever invented. If you would be so kind, adding Dropbox would be lovely.

  • Something that may be AUM or AU or a bug:

Loaded in AUM with user preset.
Reloading AUM keeps the used preset when next opened, but shows the first 80s piano preset instead of the preset playing.

I like it, I'm having a lot of fun tweaking it, nice looking, nice sounding, good stuff.

  • Really love the sound, fits in nicely between other synths I use a lot. Kind of reminds me of the Korg iM1 in its ability to make sweet sounding patches.

Try with 'headphones' since the iPad speaker hardly does the chourus effect any justice :)

I will admit I ditched the reverb for a bit of iVCS Spring Reverb AU Mmmmm

  • @brambos I'll put some 'ideas' for additions here so others can see what's going on in my crazy head :)

    • Option for Pitch-Bend depth (+/- 1-4 octaves) for crazy pitch-slides.
    • Add CC10/Panning support, panning value should optionally affect newly triggered notes and not those that are already playing making it possible to spread notes across the stereo field.
    • Spread notes in the stereo field based on note number with a 'spread' value (at extreme settings midi-note 1 is far left and midi-note 127 is far right).
    • Export of patches using iOS-Share sheet (E-Mail, AirDrop, Open In...).
    • Import patches sent to Phasemaker using 'Open In...'
    • Folders in the 'user bank' (It's needed to organise banks/patches that are imported).

Hope at least some of the above ideas make sense :)

The best idea on the list

Using the chorus as an insert effect in Cubasis makes a difference.

It's only the name that is displayed, the sound should be correct, right? That's just a consequence of Phasemaker doing its own preset management (because Apple neglected to come up with a proper system-wide solution for it).

The DAW does state-saving when you store your project and dumps the state back to Phasemaker when you load up your project again. However, there is no way for Phasemaker to know on which preset these values were originally based. So the only other 'solution' would be to not show a preset name at all - or to leave all preset management to the host. But many hosts don't offer this (e.g. Cubasis won't let you save user presets).

    tl;dr: it's one of those AUv3 quirks. ;)

Yeah the sound is correct, so it's no real issue :)

  • Damn, this has some great preset sounds. Now to learn FM programming!

Thanks - making the presets was the fun part of the project B)

For learning to program FM I recommend starting with a 2-operator algorithm (#33) to see how the sound behaves when you change the envelope and the levels of your carrier and your modulator.

Once you get to grips with this basic behaviour it's pretty easy further apply these principles to more complex algos.

There is also some basic background information in the PDF manual on ruismaker.com

...and I'm here for answering questions...

    ;)

Holy wow man. The demo on the site sounds incredible. And there's MIDI control over everything? Anyone want to buy my Volca FM? :)

Haha.. the Volca FM was actually my benchmark box. I've done a lot of testing with it while building Phasemaker and it can be made to sound pretty good. The thing with the V_FM is that it needs effects to sound good (even if it's just a lick of reverb and some delay) because the Volca itself tends to sound a bit dry and metallic-y.

And the factory patches of the V_FM are dreadful. You really need to replace them with something good to appreciate its capabilities (and designing patches on it is a challenge to say the least).

Yes and yes. I haven't wiped the patches yet but have mostly replaced them with my own which were largely created through a process I'll call "physical randomizer"; I mash the prev/next buttons while adjusting the knob stopping occasionally to see if it sucks less. :) Works pretty well!

Wow! Amazing that you can find good patches this way. Surely there must be some intuition creeping into how you're tweaking it? As a random walk of such a large space producing better results than the factory 'designer' patches implies they are truly dreadful. Or perhaps even I could program it, heh. Fortunately Doug's prerelease demo video indicates Phasemaker will come with plenty of great patches to help educate me :)

  • plans for an iphone version...? :)

  • Here we go...

  • Apparently I like FM synths, as this and FRUM have shot straight to the top of my buy next list. Any chance Phasemaker will make it to iPhone like it's twin sisters? The UI seems like it would work fine as is on bigger iPhones, the Pluses at the very least. If CPU is an issue, the iPhone 6s Plus is fairly powerful, it even has a headphone jack ;)

This makes me want it even more! Why do all the great sounds have to be locked into iPad only :(

  • Best Sounding FM synth on IOS IMHO

  • @Brambos nice work! I love the sounds. Got this and the Klevgrand Tines. I'm in AU heaven.

AU is really gaining steam lately. It just needed a little push, but it seems the momentum is there now.

That makes me a happy panda.

    Please!!!

  • Congrats on the release! I didn't know it works as a barebones standalone app for CoreMIDI - pointless noodling is probably 90% of what I do! Haha.

Will check it out later tonight.
