Yep, though if I don't try messing with envelopes while all tracks are playing, the setup can be stable...
anybody got any good clips of what the sampler is capable of?
@Matt_Fletcher_2000
Follow up on drum synths for Modstep, Modrum, the Booms are very stable, Modrum has more tweaks available...
Sunvox is an amazing companion for Modstep, for drum synth, sampler and synth....
@cblomert
What would be a really cool feature in ModStep would be the ability to 'freeze' the clips on an IAA track, so when you freeze a track it converts all clips to audio, creates a sampler instrument and assigns the audio to pads and puts the correct trigger note into the parts on the track, this would also need the reverse ability to unfreeze, which would return the track to it's MIDI/IAA state.
This would be an awesome feature and mean that we would be able to get the great sounds from the IAA's while in composition mode and then freeze clips to audio in order to trigger them reliably in a live situation, it would also mean that those of us with lesser powered iPads would not be so limited in what we can use in terms of IAA.
You can do this manually at the moment using the audio record and save to sampler functions but it requires 'fiddling' with the loop points in the sampler as well as either setting up additional tracks for the audio version or replacing the original midi channel and losing your source midi, all of which makes it too time consuming to do. Having built in functions to do this would indeed make ModStep the groove box of our dreams, well, mine anyway
^^great idea!
+1 billion...this is the exact feature that has kept the dev-abandoned and user-lamented Electrify NXT on my iPad: any midi clip made in that app (synth, sampler, drum sampler, or warped audio) can be rendered to WAV and shipped out, (directly from the clip launch gui) or used within NXT in a drum sampler, sampler instrument, or as a new audio warp clip.
How do I send midi notes to different SunVox modules at the same time? It appears that only the currently selected module receives midi input
It's not yet possible unfortunately. The developer has received many requests on his forum, and has said multi-audio-out, multi-midi-in is on his list, and he does tend to complete his to-do list. Asking NightRadio to do this is probably my #1 update request in all of iOS music.
The list of apps that can do this is pretty short, basically Thumbjam, Patterning, and LayR, (there may be more that I'm missing) and then there's some that are part way there, like Strokemachine, Roland Sound Canvas, iSynPoly, SquareSynth, iM-1, where you can send multi-midi in and get multitimbrality, but they only advertise one audio out...
Modstep can use other DAW this way too of course (AP, AUM come to mind) and vice versa, it advertises 8 audio outs, and has its own multiple instance synth and sampler, along with multiple instance AUx, but that's a lot of moving parts. An inelegant solution one might say.
I'd like to know if it's possible to use modstep on one iPad to control midi on another, either with wifi Bluetooth or a camera connection dongle. Can anyone verify if it works?
Ok, thanks a lot. I hope Alex will implement it soon, that would be so cool. I like SunVox but don't like trackers at all so just using SunVox as a synth at the moment.
The reason I wanted to use SunVox as a sound module is that it's very light on resources. Cubasis is very nice as a sound module but I can't run it together with Modstep on my old ipad. Same for iM1 and some other apps I have. And when I buy a new ipad, I'll be keeping this one so will still need a good solution for this problem. I think I have to try Caustic. Actually, iSynPoly looks interesting too.
Is anyone really successful with midi routing in Modstep? Like I'm trying to send midi to Step Poly Pro and back. Also, I'm trying to use modstep's built in studiomux capabilities to send midi to the computer but I can't get that to work.
I have struggled mightily with Modstep although I want badly to get it working for me. I'm hoping AB3 will help with the MIDI routing issues.
@yug
I know exactly what you mean about resources, I try to keep a low overhead even on Air 2. Caustic is a good idea, and that reminded me of Gadget as well. Of those two, Caustic is probably the easier on CPU. iSynPoly has a great sound.... I wish they all advertised multi audio outs!
Have you tried using the multisynth module in SunVox, it sends MIDI to any modules it's connected to?
It does but what I'm trying to do is making the first generator module receive input from MIDI Ch 1, the second module - from MIDI Ch 2, and so on.
I have done the StepPolyArp and Modstep thing lots of times, sending a single note to Step and recording the resulting Step notes in Modstep. The only issue i've had is getting one to start the other which means i've had to rely on my own timing instead
Caustic is brilliant and very light on resources compared the other all in ones i've tried and i've tried most of them
I did a comparison recently between Caustic and Gadget. Same midi file and making the synths sound as similar as possible. Gadget used around 60% cpu on Air 1, Caustic used 18%. On top of that, Caustic has a fantastic PCM synth for importing your own samples
@jn2002dk
Caustic's pcm is very special. Interesting that so many of Gadget's Gadgets are pcm synths, but none are as cool as Caustics, given it's user accessibility.
Absolutely
As i said in your thread, the more i use Caustic the more i'm amazed at what it can do and that it's developed by one guy. If i had to choose between Gadget and Caustic i would pick Caustic without hesitation
Okay, yes it's currently exactly as @Littlewoodg said you can't assign individual MIDI channels to generators. Hopefully SunVox will add this functionality sooner rather than later. You can use SunVox to send out MIDI to multiple receivers outside of Sunvox.
So, I finally caved in and bought Caustic. It's gonna take some time to master it but I can say I'm happy with Caustic. Very good sound module for Modstep and Genome
Before, I've been using several smaller size synth apps like Thor, Lorentz, BassLine, Argon, etc. and Modstep's internal sampler instrument for drums, but I just hate switching between several apps. More than 2 apps - and it becomes a real pain
