My hat is off to you, sir!

To add to this it would be great if more iOS DAW's then addopt these midi FX AU's to drive any other AU.

I think they will. I mean, it's not a proprietary feature made up by me and Jonatan; it's an official AU feature introduced in iOS 11. I can see this find a useful place in various other hosts.

But it's a chicken-egg thing until there are plugins that support it. Which is something I intend to change now ;)

@brambos I am guessing this is not In the AU specs, but dragging of the MIDI pattern to the host timeline ?

  • So this requires iOS 11?

    Yes, it's a new iOS 11 feature.

  • Hey. This is exciting. Might finally have to upgrade.

  • Way back when (several months ago) I was resolved @brambos wasn’t going the MIDI route, but now AUV3 Sequencers, Midi... totally cool, and a part of music-tech history in the making!

  • Wondrous. Thank you, Bram. I'm in.

  • @brambos

are you aware of fact that “Obsidian” will be also name of build-in synth in Nanostudio 2 ? Matt wrote on public forum that he choosed “rock” theme for naming (obsidian - synth, slate - drumsampler)

  • Holy handsome. I'll buy this on day-one but I'm not sure when I'll get to use it.

Someone mentioned it earlier in the thread. No, I wasn't aware of that. I did a pretty thorough Appstore search for the name but nothing music-related came up (probably also because NS2 isn't out yet).

A no-brainier for me, this fits perfectly into my iOS workflow.

    Great minds...

Agree. Entirely about iOS11. I still use Nanostudio regularly.

  • Several instances sounds very good so far. A further question which came when i mentioned it in the other thread (about arps).
Will it be also possible f.e. to trigger an arp with another arp.
Lets say i have an simple arp which goes trough 2 octaves in a 1/16 speed and another arp which runs at 1/4 could transpose the second arp with the 1/16 when i play them live.
It´s what i do often now and it can be quite interesting to combine several MIDI FX before the output of all these goes into an instrument.

    Bump

Looks like MIDI is doing magic in iOS... Personally, I think these developments will change the ‘static’ paino-roll forever.. Things like ‘probability’ per note will be standard on modern DAWs paino roll going forward..

That said, we still do not have a decent way to record MIDI as BM2 did with Link and export... And BM2 Midi export is broke today.

    Can AUM record ‘continuous’ midi?

I don’t think this is possible, since every host has a different data format internally and plugins have no way of knowing how to interact with that.

  • @brambos so it couldn't just generate a MIDI file and drag n drop, like it does from the files app ?
Can it still save out a MIDI files so that it can then be dragged in to the host ?

Extensions and Files are not good friends. Currently the Files app has no access to the documents area of AU Extensions. It’s something I’ll need to dig into with some help from my friends in Cupertino at some point. Probably it can be solved with some app-group voodoo magic, but it’s not at the top of my list to be honest. The idea is to run the AU itself inside the host - that’s the point of a plugin in the first place.

And you could just record the MIDI to the target track in the host, no?

So no MIDI export at all, that's OK, i can just use your other apps instead, cheers.

What app(s) do you want to export to?

I would say this is doubtful, unless the host offers some kind of record switching, because the track has an AU instrument on it, the host will probably want to record the output of the AU instrument, not the AU MIDI.
Most desktop software still struggles with this a little too.

  • @Samplemunch maybe. I've not tried any of this yet, obviously. Though if AUM can route it about, the midi is coming out somewhere so it should be capturable. Perhaps The Boss can explain the possibilities here.

  • @brambos This looks to have lots of potential!

I'm going to muse a bit here but I imagine a world in which @ChordUp develops ChordFlow in a similar direction (AUv3 midi sequencer) and allows for the sections just introduced in V2 to be midi controllable just like Bram's bass sequencer (and hopefully a drum sequence like ruismaker). I'd never leave the house...

Probably means rebranding for NS2 as I know the NS2 dev was talking about releasing the synth as a standalone AU alongside NS2

Or just go with NoteMaker. Or Bosequencer. Or sequenceMaker. Or MagicMaker. Or... :)
