@Samplemunch maybe. I've not tried any of this yet, obviously. Though if AUM can route it about, the midi is coming out somewhere so it should be capturable. Perhaps The Boss can explain the possibilities here.

Audio Evolution Mobile is an AU Host and records MIDI - I would think you could just add a MIDI track set to receive from the AU’s MIDI out port.

  • I wouldn't assume anything at this point, a lot of desktop hosts never even supported MIDI FX, so lets see who actually supports it.

    Ableton Live Does...... ;)

Holy handsome. I'll buy this on day-one but I'm not sure when I'll get to use it.

A no-brainier for me, this fits perfectly into my iOS workflow.

    Agree. Entirely about iOS11.

Ah...I forgot about that bit, the pad is still on 10. Oh well, I need an excuse to update...

P.s. Hmmmm... I didn't know Nanostudio also used an internal synth called Obsidian. An appstore search for that name didn't turn up anything music-related.

If your app comes out earlier the other might have to look for an alternative. Obseletian? Obesidian?

  • If AUM is a host for Obsidian you'd be able to route the MIDI out to whatever apps appear in the AUM MIDI routing table. You'd then be able to record the MIDI data into any app that supports the recording of MIDI data sent to it. I'm sure @brambos and/or @j_liljedahl will be able to confirm this functionality.

So long as you're able to start/stop the recording and playback in sync, you'd be able to effectively convert AUM into a timeline based DAW by having the output of a MIDI app drive the apps hosted in AUM. Conceivably you could have an app that's both IAA and AU. The AU part of the app would send MIDI out and the IAA part could record MIDI streams sent to it and record it. Presumbably such an app might be able to generate MIDI by tweaking the AU GUI controls in realtime, have MIDI sent to it trigger MIDI out "arp" like functions or even be able to program the generation of MIDI CC based upon incoming MIDI sent to it? There may be the possibility of creating a MIDI rather than audio based iDensity which uses a delay to process the incoming MIDI for transformation into MIDI output? The delay could be driven by Link based timing events or multiples thereof?

It would be very cool to have a MIDI version of BitWiz that outputs the numbers from the MidiWiz formulas to MIDI data rather than the current audio frequencies which can then be routed out to control synths, etc. Another MIDI AU app could receive this MIDI data and map it to a scale. The MidiWiz app would have settings so that you could import scala files and it would adjust the output of the MIDI to conform to the number of tones and output appropriate MIDI notes and pitch information to control synth apps to play in all sorts of traditional, non-western, microtonal, or other types of scales (e.g. the Wilsonic app). This would be a boon to the lovers of generative music as well as being able to be incorporated into more traditional music too. You could have arp like settings to control the range of notes played in an instance of the MidiWiz AU which would be a monophonic MIDI output stream. Combine various AU MidiWiz instances together in a setup and the possibilities are boundless. There could be settings to convert the output from MidiWiz to CC controller data rather than notes too.

are you aware of fact that “Obsidian” will be also name of build-in synth in Nanostudio 2 ?

Someone mentioned it earlier in the thread. No, I wasn't aware of that. I did a pretty thorough Appstore search for the name but nothing music-related came up (probably also because NS2 isn't out yet).

Probably means rebranding for NS2 as I know the NS2 dev was talking about releasing the synth as a standalone AU alongside NS2

Or just go with NoteMaker. Or Bosequencer. Or sequenceMaker. Or MagicMaker. Or... :)

Mutts Nuts or Bees Knees would be appropriate names :)

Looks like MIDI is doing magic in iOS... Personally, I think these developments will change the ‘static’ paino-roll forever.. Things like ‘probability’ per note will be standard on modern DAWs paino roll going forward..

That said, we still do not have a decent way to record MIDI as BM2 did with Link and export... And BM2 Midi export is broke today.

    Can AUM record ‘continuous’ midi?

That would be really smart, I use AUM to record audio all the time, being able to record the MIDI from a MIDI AU track would be really cool.....
Would there be issues around having both MIDI Output AU's and Audio output AU's on the same track...which do you record ?

I think it would be possible to have apps that could create tracks that include both MIDI and audio on the same track with an option to unlink them and create separate tracks. This would be analogous to video editing apps which allow you to have a video track with audio and/or to separate the audio from the video and have them on two tracks (e.g. LumaFusion). The combined MIDI/audio track format would be limited to apps that are capable of playing it, but there could be a way of exporting them out as separate tracks to more traditional DAWs where the audio and MIDI are on separate tracks.

If I am not mistaken... BM2 do record both audio and Midi on the 'same track with an option to record audio'... Sadly, there is no longer a way to export one's creation, Dropbox seems to be broken.

I haven't kept up with iOS lately, is it midi via AU that's iOS 11? Or just certain aspects, like midi FX?

(What is midi fx by the way? I think I tried a note repeating midi fx like 20 years ago, but never saw the point of it)

Until iOS 11 Audio Unit Instruments could only receive MIDI. Now they can also send MIDI back to the host. The host can then decide what to do with it. Garageband will record it into the current track (as shown in their WWDC video). AUM routes it to whatever destination you want.

I'm also expecting Audiobus to implement it at some point, allowing AU plugins in their MIDI OUTPUT slots. It would make a lot of sense.

Ah I see, that does clear up a few things, thanks. Well, my iPad Air isn't getting any younger and my iPhone got a large crack across the entire screen, few bits n pieces missing, some internal stuff like light sensor and whatnot isn't working. So I guess it's probably time to upgrade to new devices anyways:-)

  • A midi looper à la infinite looper recording live input would make an aaamazing AU for AUM

Classy. I like the new name better anyway!

  • Nice touch. Good man!

  • But what is with the other Odessa music app?

  • ....a wait....just a (bad) joke.
Nice move indeed. Some extra points for that.
