@AudioGus mr gus. Great video again. Do you have to be careful in what sample you choose to egoist. Do certain sounds grooves songs etc work better to be spliced than others. I’ve tried quite ‘busy’ samples and they just end up quite chaotic and unuseable ?
Also from your video I realise that you do have to do a lot of fine tuning yourself. I think I was just randomising or at least replacing prebuilt presets with new samples and hoping for the best but it doesn’t seem like that works the best ?

Thank you universe. For the most part I do like using single hit samples that I have stacked end to end but will occasionally do an acapella or break in a track. One feature that was introduced not too long ago is the ‘monophonic slicer’ which essentially ensures your sample slice does not overrun into the next triggered slice. This was the biggest game changer for me in the app....

The end to end sample stack is a cool idea, thanks!
I realized MTS is a perfect in-device tool to make a stack, its audio editor and direct implementation of AudioShare/Audiocopy make it easy to build a custom track file of select clips and hits...fun!

I love the simplicity of it, and it's easy to get things going. But I find it similar to Sector: Everything that goes in comes out kind of sounding the same. In the case of Egoist, I fall too easily into making showy, glitchy, skittery stuff that I find dated. How can I break out of this trap? Suggestions?

Start with everything set to default, import your sample, and build the track from there. Doug’s vids are good for explaining this.

I used to start by banging away on the randomisers, and every track I did sounded Egoist. Once I started building things up from scratch, and avoiding presets or randomisers, it sounded less generic.

Seems quite obvious when you say it, but it's so easy just to let autopilot run. Thanks for the advice. And is there word that this will/won't go AU?

    I asked, it’s definitely going AU :)

Blimey, be interesting to see how that works.

Yeah, wow. I am looking forward to tinkering with the possibilities...

Running several instances of the sampler will be cool.

Most definitely. Opens up one of the current limitations for sure. I'm also keen to have easy transient detection in AU hosts. (I think Egoist detection is better than Reslice)

Tends to sound better than ReSlice, to my ears anyway. A couple of Egoist samplers, Quanta and Spacecraft, Cyclop...triggered via Steppolyarp and Rozeta....blimey...!

MIDI-out the bassline to Cyclop, compliments it perfectly.

Didn‘t manage this for good. Technical - yes there are get someone notes in. But musically the notes dont make any sense. And the sequencers in Cyclop Starts a new after maybe step two.
Do I have to set Egoist, that only the bass notes go to the miss-out?

On the Egoist/settings tab, select Cyclop as MIDI destination for the bass. You can then deselect or turn down the internal bass synth in the Egoist top mixer. Just tested it and it still works for me.

To be honest I find the bass sequencer lets Egoist down a bit, it's a bit of a weird one.

Truth be told I never use the bass and only very rarely use the drums. But I will try some Cyclop madness now you mention it....

Truth be told I very rarely use Egoist these days. Not because I don’t like it, but my attention’s focussed on AUM AU worlds these days. Egoist going AU will definitely bring that one back into the mix.

Things seem to be getting pretty good on the old iPad this year.

Fun isn't it? Have to keep reminding myself amongst the kvetching and complaining (self) that there's an awful lot of ice cream on the table....by the by: What about Quanta? Worth your pocket money?

Haven’t had a proper workout with it, but it’s fun fiddling with, and seems to cover the whole range from ‘sensible keys’ to ‘noises and soundscapes’. Sits nicely in my AUM/AU workouts, and fills the ‘sequenced by Steppolyarp melodic sampler’ gap that apps like Spacecraft don’t quite fill.

Yeah I like it, definitely worth the entry fee. I’m still running the previous version though, apparently the latest one has a few issues.

Good running Spacecraft for ambience, Quanta for sequenced samples, Cyclops for bass, and the usual Brambos/Steppolyarp stuff all bashed out in AUM for live madness.

Forgive me yet another obvious (but not to me) question: When running Cyclop and Egoist are they both just Linked and on channels in AUM or do you somehow replace the Egoist bass directly with Cyclop (in Egoist)?

I’d have an input for Egoist (drums, sample) on one channel, and Cyclop bass on another. You can’t route the Cyclop audio through Egoist - which is a shame as you lose the fx.

The AU update will make things very interesting, as you can have a few channels of the samplers, all with separate Egoist fx - drum tracks etc. all going at once. Or you could simply use it as a drum or bass sequencer to compliment your other AU’s.

The Egoist AU will give us even more toys to play with.

Thank you skipper. As presumed, but the confirmation removes the uncertainty and that feeling that folks are having easier fun than me etc...

    Putin has Egoist?

  • A side dish of gourmet touche , served up nicely and garnished with a McDonalds Happy Meal.

  • It really can be a dream machine awake. I fed in 20 seconds of a gospel choir earlier and two hours later I am still entertaining myself on the first few patterns of part one....

  • @mAxjUlien @AudioGus because of this thread I dived back into egoist. Guys thanks so much for the info, the insight and the inspiration that made me retrace this app. I kinda thought it was all just a tad overhyped even though I appreciated it was an excellent app. It’s not overhyped though. Not at all. It’s so amazing. The possibilities. The interface. The ease of use, once you learn the ins and outs. If this also becomes AU so that you can have a direct seamless interface into something like bm3 then all I can say is Wow 😮

I missed any initial hype for Egoist myself. But if this thread is any indication, I think many were in the same boat underestimating Egoist @universe Also, SB recently updating their apps to AUv3 is what actually made me pick it back up to explore. I think it’s a more when than if thing (AU) at this point.

The only things I wished it did that would make it even more user friendly and creative is to be able to switch drum kits and bass between patterns. Like for breakdowns or middle eights etc in a song. You currently have to stay with the same kit for the entire song. Also a shame you can’t save drum or bass user presets. You have to build them from scratch each time. These are only small things but make a big difference. Oh and also multi stem export for proper mixing externally.

Great points. +1000 for different kits, bass for different patterns. I initially hated the bass/beats but they’re pretty good also but would be great with your suggestions. However, once AU update drops, I doubt I’ll use those parts much tho.

How do you mean you won’t use those parts much. Do you mean my feature suggestions ? Would AU be a work around for them somehow?

  • Is it not possible to make an Init patch which replays your imported loop perfectly? I tried this in an attempt to make every output less Egoisty, but I find it frustrating. With the correct bpm and number of slices set, all played in correct order, all effects turned off, and so on, the output is still quite different from the imported loop. What am I doing wrong?

Good advice in this thread on not making every Egoist sound the same, btw.

Well said. The kits are pretty weak. Or maybe undistinguished is a better way to put it.
But the slicer, particularly an AU that can share the melodic load? It's what I've dreamed of since getting into iOS.

Did you reset all parameters? (The lowest X button on the slice screen). Also make sure tempo matches original and you have the measures set to match original (T/1, T/2, etc).

After reseting parameters I noticed that the envelope slider gets set all the way to the left. It may need to then be set all the way to the right to maintain the original sound.

  • Also make sure you have sliced up the sample into 16 set length slices (not detecting transients).

  • Thanks, got it sorted, I thought I had the correct number of slices, loop length and bpm, but must have messed up somehow.

Still a slight difference, I´m guessing due to Egoist´s decay and the max-out stuff. But not too bad, for a Soft Drummer loop with brushes where these decays are noticeable.

  • @AudioGus Holy mother of God!!!!! Thanks for the tips!!!!!! I might not leave the house again!!!!!

  • Ok does anyone know how I can stack folders of samples together? Instead of having them all in same directory??

I think your suggestions should be implemented but I think once I can load Egoist in BM3/Cubasis...i wont personally use the bass/beats sections much.

Ah I see what you mean. Funny thing is that personally I’ve found when you play with the kits, pitch them up or down, Change the snares around etc etc, I can get some really good drums. I originally thought they were mediocre until I realised you can change them up a lot. And the bass is so fat and dirty,it would be an awesome bass synth just on its own.

Yah, sometimes I would use midilfos to just cycle or oscilate through the hats, snares and kicks to wake them up. AU automation will be amazing.

I think the bass synth and sequencer is one of its strengths. I love the way I can make it sound exactly like those hard 303 techno tracks from my youth. Like the rest of the app, it’s simple yet so versatile. And, I agree, would make an awesome bass synth on its own.

  • Hey guys, this reminded me how much I love egoist. It was actually such a freak out for me that I named my bleeping last LP 'Egoist' and nobody exept you guys would 'get' the lil joke. Others people are like: thats not a real word and what do you mean? You are an ego type guy or what haha, I'm like laughing saying its more mysterious than that.
Please keep in mind this LP was my first egoist freakout so there are probably classic moves and tricks that I abuse and stuff but its all good. Its like finding out that beat repeat and stutter works so you over glitch and tweak out the tracks way too much and Im so guilty haha. Cheers, and the lp is free so have fun and also the other tracks are not ego only cuts.
ps. the full mini set is lower in volume but has the overdub that is missing on both individual tracks so I advise that mix but the 2 chopped up were compressed to hell and are club mix loud boomers.

@universe I actually dig the drums/bass just fine. Especially when laying out the track feel and groove but when AU drops BM3 will be handling all of my dirty drum debouchery and perhaps iBassist will assist me with controlling SM1, Model D, Monopoly, Madrid, etc on the bass.

That said, I haven’t used anything with Egoist since rediscovering it. Using it for hip hop you don’t really need any sounds that aren’t present in whatever sample or song you’re remixing that you can’t isolate chop and remake into something epic. Also, for purely DJ purposes...Egoist is a cheat code.

With AU, Layering Egoist will probably cost me several real human relationships.lol

Ha yes totally. Funny thing is though that if bm3 had transient detection as it had advertised you would almost have egoist inbuilt into bm3. I’m sure it woul£ be easy for them to add a randomise feature too
