I take your point, it looks fun as a sketchbook especially on the road but as a recording and instrument it's not that great for 900 euro.
The dominion sounds very nice so maybe you know more about it than me. I’ll give you that ✌️
It’s not unusable - the sounds are great, workflow is very good, and the range of options: different synth engines, sampler, drum machine, sequencers, fx etc. make it a very capable device. The battery lasts for days and it’s totally portable.
Price wise - it’s a highly engineered bit of kit, and considering the cost of gear these days, probably not that far off what it’s worth. It just looks cheap from the photos.
I’ve got one here (given to me as a gift). I rarely use it, but always appreciate the quality when I do.
I wouldn’t pay £800 for one because it doesn’t really fit in my workflow, but I can completely understand those who do.
It’s an instant fun machine and because there so much functionality in a small form factor it’s easy to pick it up and use in many situations. I just wish the sequencer were easier to use. That’s why I think/hope op-z will be the perfect partner for op-1 and iOS. Yes I would pay 1000€ for op-1 and 599€ for op-z.
I would say if you aren't prepared to pay for it and when have the opportunity to use it and rarely do there is a flaw in the pricing and design of the product.
There isn’t a flaw in the design, and it’s priced at what people are prepared to pay for it. If it was overpriced no-one would buy it, and the number of sales suits their bespoke manufacturing process. It’s not knocked out in a Far East factory by kids.
As I said above, it doesn’t fit into my workflow. Not because it isn’t any good, but due to the way I now work, and I don’t have the time to dedicate building the muscle memory required for proper use. However the sampler is excellent and has had use within our band, and once things quieten down I’ll use it more.
For those that use it more regularly, and expertly than I do, it’s worth every penny.
I'll ask you about the Dominion one in another post ;-) Very happy that machine exists. Maybe you can do a little OP-1 and Dominion sound bite piece. That would be a funny duo and also pretty cool if you make something nice.
Yea, its take work to do and most musicians are perfectionists but i like to hear that, also if the sounds were complementary to each other. Make me eat humble pie too :-P
I would like that, i understand that would take time of course. Would be nice to see the sounds compliment each other also. Make me eat humble pie :-P
I started an OP-Z only news, video site because I'm super excited for this thing to launch an info has been spread out across so many different sources it's been tough to keep track of. Leaving this hear in case it's useful https://www.opzed.com for all things OP-Z.
That's a pretty amazing endorsement. I hope some of the TE makers troll this forum and get a chance to read that.
Has a nice price of $600usd. I realistically don’t have a solid use for it and my interest in it is thin. TE users are fanatics for this stuff and I’m sure we’ll see people do some amazing stuff with it on YouTube.
fo sho!
Actually I bought an ipad out of frustration for waiting for the OP-Z ... Best decision I ever made! 600 euro is way to high for this machine, that is only the initial price, you have to pay extra for what they call ' modules' which gives extra I/O like cv/midi which should come included with it at no extra cost! Also TE have no communication with their ultra loyal fan base which has been very painful to watch.
Too much toy-like. Make it bigger. Don't shrink it so much. That seems to be a goal by itself this way. While it might very well be a hindrance in using it.
I used to think that about the OP1 until I acquired one. The fact that I can now slip it into a small bag making it easy (and light) to take to rehearsals and gigs has made me reconsider that.
Depending on the price, I'm probably going to buy one of these. In conjunction with the iPad screen and a MIDI keyboard, it could be an absolutely killer combo.
The OP-1 is doable. But that new device of them is really too small I think.
Yeah that one does look a bit tiddly.
About the size, I have a couple of pocket operators and the size of those are not too small. The size of op-z is a bit bigger than the pocket operators so I’m not worry about its size.

+1
btw Teenage Engineering is also working with IKEA, this will probably be cheaper. But somehow this hyped stuff takes very long to release, 1st promo's date back for more than a year ago
Have you got one? Personally I think the sampler section is great, and the controls very usable. I’ll be using mine for gigs.
Considering it has a sampler, six synth engines, built in sequencer/arp, drum machine, four track recorder and is built like a brick, calling it a ‘scam’ is a verging on libellous.
Nope too expensive for my me. Even 2nd hand... If I had the money I would rather go for an Elektron sampler though.
I was given mine, I’d probably have gone for something else given the choice, but to be fair it’s a very versatile thing. I use it as a MIDI keyboard for synth app playing, then whip it through AUM for its synth and sampler capabilities. The arps and fx are great for live tweaking. It nearly fits in my pocket, and the battery lasts for ages.
Didn’t think I needed one, but now I’d miss it if it went.
Can understand that you attach to a certain kind of workflow. In my experience changing workflows is sometimes hard. I have a Novation Circuit see even on this forum enthousiast responses, but I can't really get into it.
I looked at Circuit’s, but they looked a bit confusing to me.
The op-1 is actually pretty straightforward, I could do most things with it in 30 mins, and a further 30 watching vids got me up to speed with the rest. There are sub-menus and stuff but it’s all pretty accessible and the knobs are good for tweaking.
