I suck. Please help my incompetent self do some App Store Optimisation!

Hey guys!

So I'm trying to get my act together with respect to getting Audiobus ranking properly in appropriate searches on the App Store, because currently it's totally rubbish as far as I can tell - I have no idea how people are even finding it, and weirdly Apple don't give you any visibility on what people are searching for.

As the inventor (and, frankly, sometimes a clueless nerd), I'm the absolute worst person for figuring out what it is people actually look for when they end up finding Audiobus.

So, I thought I'd ask you canny lot: imagine you're someone much like yourself, with an Audiobus-shaped hole in your lives, typing away in the search box on the App Store.

WTF are you searching for?

Cool, noted, thanks - huh, yep, barely rank for that one, although it's apparently a pretty rare search term. Then again, we're a niche bunch =)

  • app audio router

  • Boy you’re not kidding. I did several searches and never saw audiobus.
As the developer what effect can you have on the search process to make it more accessible?

  • What did you search for, out of curiosity, @Ben?

There's a lot you can do, the main ones being keywording appropriately in the app's title, subtitle and, of course, keywords, but there's a lot of strategies one can employ. A google for "App Store Optimisation" will give you a bunch of stuff; some resources:

I've been successful so far with Loopy, but Audiobus is baffling me right now. Really, you gotta be top ten for it to matter, and voila, my sorry state of affairs so far:

    +1

    AU host

  • AUv3 host

Only 1 app, MultitrackDaw shows up with that search.

  • The app store is just such a mess. I thought I read somewhere they improved the search function to be more fair or something. I don't remember how I found out about audiobus but I think some youtube clip probably.

  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • Dawless music production.

  • Hey, and Michael, you're a friggin genius! Very much appreciate you and your efforts, can't wait for the new loopy, although, I now understand through my own experience, how becoming a father can change everything and make things pretty unpredictable.

  • I would think anyone remotely knowledgeable about things like auv3 or IAA or the concept of hosts would already know about and probably have Audiobus. My recommendation would be to work in keyword phrases like “music app” and “audio workstation” or other things we could imagine someone without our shared vocabulary might search for. Just my 2c!

It's particularly hard for something technical like Audiobus - it's quite a tricky app to even describe, let alone provide a pithy set of keywords for.

You're probably right. I'm trying some of those - it's hard to get traction on the more popular ones; "Music app" will be almost impossible. There's so little universal vocab that I can come up with here!

    Thank you! ❤️

Yeah, parenthood is just crazy, one of those things you can't even really describe to someone who's not experienced it themselves. Totally outside my prior universe of experience!

I learned about the forum before the audiobus app. It got recommended to me here.

Here’s my first post. Maybe my naive post can help you see what goes on in a newb mind.

    Man was I confused 😂😂

I was googling about several Apps that I saw mentioned on other webpages.

And any and all of those Apps lead me to this very forum.
After several such Google searches, I finally registered here and this way also found the AudioBus App itself.

So, not over an App Store search.

This is how I remember it, too, but it’s been so long ago. I would be surprised if this forum wasn’t the biggest referrer for Audiobus.

    A couple of ideas...

Create a “What is Audiobus?” sticky with a link to the AppStore since you don’t see your apps sidebar with the forum’s mobile view.

Add some text to the app’s description that explains Aubiobus’ role as it relates to recording music/audio.

I think that might be quite common!

Seems a pretty reasonable question =) Too bad GarageBand is so locked-down.

  • “AUv3 mixer” brings it right up

  • A mention of this forum in a news article on CNET or something was my introduction here, to Audiobus magic, and to the reality that apps could work together. It came at a good time too, having gotten my first iPad, and having long since reached the point of losing all inspiration the second I sat down at an PC (due to doing that all day for a living).

All that to say, this forum is probably the most powerful marketing tool for Audiobus (and all iOS music apps in general) there is. How you leverage that? I have no idea.

I can honestly say that other than FL Studio Mobile, I have never purchased a single music app based on stumbling over it based on an App Store search.

Other than that, maybe rename Audiobus? :D

“Music app connection”, “audio app connection”, “music production” There was a ton listed on the last one but alas no Audiobus.
Saw AUM listed somewhere earlier but can’t remember the search I used.
Anything we as a group can do to help improve that?

Right, yeah. Same issue of trying to find some reasonably widely-used terminology for something quite complicated. And the more general you go, the more competition there is - music production would be a really tough one!

Anything we as a group can do to help improve that?

Kind of you to ask =) Helping me out with this thread is a really good start. App Store reviews give you a nice boost too, both because higher-rated apps are ranked better, but also the keywords used in the review text matter.

I’m going to have to agree that Audiobus has a shocking lack of sex, nudity, violence, crime, graphic language, gossip, celebrities, drugs, twerking, politics, and other click-bait stuff. What is up with THAT? At least throw the word “KILLER” in bright red letters into the app description. Something! It’s a complete surprise it’s gotten this far. Same goes for AUM. Totally dependable and handy. Ho hum. 😂
