  • Testing it on iPad Air and flight is good. At leats with medium size patches. Connecting cables with fingers instead of mouse is a whole new level of usability, feeling more real if you can say that. From my perspective if you add AS, Geodesics, Vult, Valley plus maybe some NYSTHI stuff it will be pretty covered rack with all kind of modules.

Ok... I played with VCV Rack for a couple 2 to 3 months about a year ago. So, I'm certainly familiar with this, but honestly... I don't get the enthusiasm.

I mean, we have a plethora of various fx, instruments, midi tools & toys, sound generators, etc. that we can chain up in nearly infinite configurations already using AB3/AUM/apeMatrix.

Add to that, we have apps like zmors modular, Audulus, and a couple others I seem to recall.

Again, from the video demo... this looks very close to VCV rack that I've already spent a few months with. How is this iOS version all that and a bag of chips?

Don't get me wrong, I'll almost certainly get it too. But beyond audio nerd erector-set style tinkering, I don't get what mirack will bring to the table that we don't already have in abundance. I could easily be wrong here, but please tell me what I'm missing?

Well i think for a visual person like myself this port is going to be just what people need on iOS to become familiar with the whole Eurorack way of working. zMors and Audiobus, while nice in concept are super unapproachable for the average user. I have both apps but when i open them i just stare blankly at them, push a couple buttons and close them after the headache ensues.

With miRack taking a fork out of the page of VCV i totally understand it...and having a real word reference in the UI makes it a lot easier to understand.

Personally I’m glad someone has finally taken up the gauntlet to bring this version of eurorack to iOS where i think it will result in a whole new batch of enthusiasts and users.

Plus if miRack gets Omri excited it will be even better:

Yes, I kind of get that. I haven't really taken to Audulus or zmors either... although I do find zmors slightly more approachable.

And, when I was playing with VCV Rack I remember thinking, "Gee, why doesn't someone port this over to iOS? It's so cool to tinker with!"

However, when I consider that vcv rack and mirack are basically a virtual "rack" to add various forms of sound generator modules, virtually chained/cabled into other modules that alter the sound, and maybe something that triggers, sequences, or generative impulses, that ultimately go to another module to mix it, and then to an output... well, isn't that basically what we're already doing with AUM/AB3/apeMatrix?

I agree with @echoopera - I never discount the visual element of these things. I was thinking of Zmors, Audulus and KQMinisynth but I just can't cosy up to any of them. They all either look daunting or just not appealing to me.

Will that matter to the sound?, no, but it might make me more apt to spend more time with it. Particularly if that equates to a thoughtful layout and better flow. I find the two often go together.

In concept it totally is, but i think the whole allure of the Eurorack workflow is that everything is exposed and there for you to manipulate. There’s a pot and port for whatever you want to do, whereas with our current AB/AUM workflow a lot goes on under the hood and is a bit of a mystery to most users.

Your initial gut reaction to VCV belonging on the iPad was the right one. Don’t go second guessing your gut reaction 👊🏼™️🤪

  • Oh, I'm not second guessing anything. And as I mentioned initially, I'll certainly be jumping right in when mirack is released also.

It's just that after watching hours of vcv rack tutorials playing with vcv rack for a few months, I ultimately came back to preferring screwing around in the AB3/AUM/apeMatrix playgrounds instead.

  • @skiphunt honestly if miRack scratches my Eurorack itch well enough, my wallet will be thankful. 🤪

  • Also... somewhat related to this current conversation... Kai > @echoopera said:

    Ha! Gotcha ;)

Also, when I first started comparing vcv rack to what's already available... I was thinking of some of the newer apps that Kai Aras has been developing... that expose more controls in the chain for shaping the sound... and Audio Damage's Quanta for example.

I do like the idea of mirack though. Looking forward to playing with it. I think part of what I wanted to have something like VCV rack on iOS was that I didn't like having to be chained to my desktop. I wanted to take it with me on a touch screen. That's what's most appealing to me about this new mirack prospect.

  • Will it have hosting capabilities? I’d love a Reason like workflow since iOS Reason can’t give me that

Sounds a little like when people are happy with their Strat and don't understand why someone might want a Tele and a Rickenbacker and a Les Paul and an L-5.

Different synths sound different. Different architectures provide possibilities. While I don't know which modules he is porting, VCV Rack and Softube and NI Reaktor all offer fun possibilities to explore for people who enjoy such exploration.

That isn't some people's bag. But some people enjoy such explorations.

  • @skiphunt: there are CPU efficiencies to be had by having it all in one host. The number of AU designed to be just modules is limited compared to what is available as AU.

As someone who has used actual physical modular systems for 25 years+, VCV Rack is the only software alternative that comes close to the real thing in terms of workflow and the collection of modules (although Nord Modular was pretty bad ass too). Add in the touch interface of an ipad and I think this will be fantastic.... especially if at some point DC signals can be sent out of miRack into the physical world. As well as having an actual modular system, I used VCV Rack on a 24" touch enabled Wacom screen and I love it. Having the equivalent on a self contained, portable device will be great IMO.

Hmmm.... I guess I wasn't clear in my posts/replies. I'm NOT dismissing this AT ALL. I TOO am excited for it. My questioning had more to do with the differences in sound composition/creation using mirack and or vcv rack, vs the vast array of audio apps we have to choose from already.

To be clear, I'm already waiting in line to buy this when it drops. I'm only asking what modular approaches like this bring to the table that you can't already do. There's no need to defend it's more than welcome arrival. It's more of a higher level question I guess, ie. what can you do with this that you can't already do.

I’ve been playing with VCV Rack way more than iOS lately, so I may be out of the loop on new iOS apps.

However, with VCV Rack, you have a world of individual modules that you can use to create whatever you want. VCA’s, LFO’s, slew limiters, sequential switches, Bernoulli gates, etc. I don’t think these types of things exist individually in iOS? And connecting them under current iOS structures would be cumbersome.

In VCV Rack, building your own patches is quick and easy. I don’t think that there is much that compares to it in iOS (happy to be corrected).

The thing about real modularity with CV or VCV inputs for lots of parameters is that you can wire things together in ways that you can't when you are serially arranging entire effect modules which is what one does in AUM/APEmatrix.

Audulus is a great tool (I spend loads of time designing things in it), but its oscillators don't quite have the oomph that the best oscillators do in some other synths and a lot of things are just tons of work to put together if there isn't already a module that you can piggyback on.

There are a variety or interesting modules for VCV rack for which there aren't really very close analogs on the iPad.

    More tools for tinkerers.

Multi-channel capability would be amazing. I'd love to use this with ES8 eventually, even though I don't have it yet.

Expert Sleepers just announced the ES9, and it looks like the ideal all-in-one solution for connecting an iPad to Eurorack. Especially with an iPad Pro, since it has USB C!

16 inputs and outputs! For that amount of connectivity, the price seems pretty amazing. It will be interesting to see how many of those are accessible via iOS

I should probably supplement my comment by saying that, for my meager setup and needs, this price is more than I’d part with (for now).

I run VCV Rack on a Mac, use iOS apps in conjunction with Mac occasionally, and have a Behringer Neutron on the way soon. It seems like it would be a perfect bridge for all of that, but I just can’t fork out that kind of money.

The problem was that newer devices have 48kHz hardware sample rate and when I'm setting preferred buffer duration to say 1024 samples, the hardware buffer is set to that duration, but due to rounding, my callback is getting alternating 940/941-sample buffers. I didn't expect the buffer size to vary.

Currently, miRack is always working at 44.1kHz due to the fact that some modules (most notably Audible Instruments) are hardcoded to work at certain sample rate which can't be changed without recompilation. In VCV Rack this is solved by resampling inputs and outputs of such modules but that's a waste of resources on mobile. At some point I will add support for switching between most commonly used sample rates.

Could you educate me on a few other questions if you’d have a spare minute:
    How critical variable callback is?
How does newer iPads performance would compare to older devices with your solution implemented, if you know of course?
Is there also a preferable bitrate on those devices?

There's nothing much to say really. Strictly speaking, that was just a bug in the code. The solution shouldn't affect performance.
