Pitch Shifting apps

I need an app that pitch shifts into a delay
and the note goes up or down with the
delay dependent upon the amount of delays.

For instance the pitch shifted note will go up with each repeated delay,
so delay one will be C, the next will be D, the next F and so on and so forth.
The pitch doesn't have to be precise.
The possibility of having it Bpm synced though would be cool.

Is there anything like that out there?

Thank you in advance.

  • Harmony8 with zero feedback and up to 8 notes synced delay (AU)

  • @Korakios

Thank you Harmony 8 is precisely what I need.
What's it like in live usage do you know?

I'd be very interested to know how you can setup Discord 4 to obtain such a pitch shifted delay 🤔.

    Stable :)
You might want to check “echo-pitch” app , don’t have it but people here liked it.

Harmony8 can go up to +-12 semitones (keep that in mind)
Also it defaults to mono pitch tracking which will sound garbage (or glitchy) on anything besides voice, so switch the algorithm to poly .
As bonus it has great ensemble fx, plus it’s each delay voice can be send to reverb independently ;)

You may want to use AUM or ApeMatrix as send fx (no buses on Audiobus  ) and keep the dry signal cause it tends to lower the overall volume :)

  • I usually use Bleass Delay for this purpose. All of the options are pretty good, but to my ears, Bleass has the "cleanest" pitch shifting algorithm.

  • Harmony8 isn’t clean even in poly mode since it retains the length of the sample ,instead of a classic tape effect where the speed goes up or down depending the pitch

  • @Skyblazer

The BLEASS delay sounds like it has some form of flanger
going into the delay which isn't quite what I need.
That could've been the demo though.

I listened to the Harmony 8 demo and though it's not a clean pitch shift
as @Korakios has mentioned it does what I can hear in my head.

I had a listen to the Echo Pitch delay and it sounded really good.

  • Audiodamage Discord4 has 2xlfo!
you can pitch shift up and down with those.
"The pitch doesn't have to be precise." he says...

  • also you should check:

maybe it is what you want:)

  • @rs2000

    Thanks for that.

    Dischord 4 sounds very interesting.

  • What about the idea of sending delayed midi notes that pitch up rather than pitching up the audio? Midi Echo AU can do this.

(This has triggered an idea for my next Mozaic script. One of the first I did, and one of my favorites, was a midi echo that can have different velocity per echo. Maybe I'll add variable pitch to that one too. Sort of like an arpeggiator, but different.)

I was mentally preparing a response that "echo'ed" these similar 2 points.

To pitch shift with note accuracy it's better to echo midi events with the "pitch/note" changed and MIDI Echo does just that with adjustable note values but they are strict 1/2 step settings.

If you echo based upon pitch shifting you might get echoes that are not strictly in-tune with the 12 notes of the keyboard and that's interesting but dramatically different than something that sounds like extra notes from the keyboard.

So, a new (or updated) MIDI Script that moves echo'ed notes up the scale would be a great idea.

yeh, def gonna do this. I'm pretty pleased with the existing Velocity MIDI Echo script. Pitch (with scale options) will be super useful. I've been away from Mozaic scripting for awhile, having run out of ideas I thought I could manage, so I'm ready to jump back in.

    @waka_x

I already have gliderverb, I found it lovely
for creating drones and textures, especially
if they need to be pitched just so.

@Rs2000 demonstrated perfectly what dischord 4
can do in regards to my initial request and furthermore
took time out of his day to do it.

From the answers today I will definitely be
getting both Dischord 4 and Harmony Eight.

    Edit.

Everyone on this thread took time out
to provide answers and that for me is great.

It should be very well received if you apply your scripting knowledge on this use case.

I was looking at your Chordulator script and how you handled scales. I think you can pull this
"echo" off and secure another Top 5 Download script.

The "MIDI Echo" app invokes some magical textures but doesn't respect scales. Echoes (or PPQN notes) could make something a lot more musical as it loops a numeric pattern up or down a selected scale.

Jazz players live off this pattern-based scale playing.

It might also be a nice tweak to link the note rate to a PPQN setting so it also
creates cool rhythmic grooves that emphasize the BPM setting of the DAW and sync to a drum track.

    Looking forward to your implementation.

  • What about Modley from Klevgrand?

I've been gradually working on an echo script myself. It sounds like yours will be much different. The main feature of my script is...a really specific thing. How to explain it?

Like a dance music riser often does, it goes Do Re Mi Fa, Re Mi Fa So, Mi Fa So La, Fa So La Ti. Except, with semitones. It can't be locked to a scale or even tempo at this point. It's more of a trippy toy for now. I set it aside for a while in favor of working on a different script.

The "All" knob changes the number of semitones that each note increases by, and the "Group" knob adds X semitones every 4 (or 3) notes. "All Down" and "Group Down" make the notes go down instead of up. Time and Echo pads multiply the time between notes and number of echoes. The 1, 2, 3, 4 emoji knobs add or subtract semitones from every Xth note in each bar. Music note L is note length.

Feel free to draw inspiration, or not. ;)

  • @Skyblazer

    though rather informative,
    the questions have been
    concerning audio delays not midi.

If the midi scripts can assist in affecting the
delay effect then that would most useful.

Still, thank you as we are all learning.

Any parameter on any delay effect, or any pitch shift effect, could be automated. So what you could do is set the "pitch" parameter on any regular pitch shifter plugin, to increase by a CC value (determined by the scale) every 8th note, offset slightly so that it comes in before the audio delay, and then you'd just sync any delay plugin to the tempo as well.

With the holidays approaching, I'm not sure if I'll have the time to make that, but it would be fairly straightforward to write. I think a fast programmer could do it in less than a day. And McD did make a topic for requesting new Mozaic scripts....it hasn't really taken off, but I hope it does.

    https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/35167/request-new-mozaic-scripts-here

Edit: Also I just realized, @Gravitas you weren't the one who wanted the audio delay to be synced to the scale either. So that would be even easier to make. Hmm...well it would be pretty cool to "turn any delay into a pitch shifting delay".

Edit 2: Actually, since the echoes usually bleed together, it would require a bunch of AUM tracks, each with a signal routed into an instance of a delay plugin. Although I could just post the AUM preset with it. And then I could even have it rotate through different delays while pitch shifting.

... but, have you considered that there is more than one way to create a delay? If I hit a midi note, then a series of fading out further midi notes over time, that “fakes” an audio delay in a sense, believe it or not.

The only reason I make a point of this is a midi echo approach could be a more efficient and accurate way of creating a delay that changes in pitch. Pitch shifting audio is relatively hard CPU expensive. The quality of pitch shifted audio suffers, especially the less clean the source sound.

My reading of your original post leads me to think a pitched midi delay could be a valid approach.

But if you’ve decided that an audio-only approach is the only valid way to go about it, I’ll say no more about it. B)
