Just had an email reply from Sugar Bytes to say that although they have discussed it in depth, they have no plans to port Obscurium to iOS, mostly because the GUI controls are too small for iOS and would require a significant reworking which they are not able to undertake at the moment because they are fully committed with projects for the foreseeable future.
@klownshed
What you've experienced with Auria is a very common experience with so many different users trying different DAWs. Each DAW has fans and haters.
The reason for endless discussions about which one is "the best" certainly is:
There is none. None for everybody.
A DAW is a piece of software in which a certain workflow becomes very apparent and that's where preferences and opinions differ most.
However in general I have to say from my own experience that it's often worth spending some time with a new app - it can sometimes take a while until it "clicks".
Have to say I was slightly underwhelmed by it, after watching the vids and then finally having a go with it. I actually think you can do more interesting things on the iPad these days, via a combination of AU’s and sequencers.
It’s very pretty though, and the presets are cool.
The first time I saw it it didn't jump out at me at all, but once I got my hands on it and started learning its capabilities, it really began to shine. Like a lot of Sugar Bytes synths it offers a quite unique way of generating new ideas through their own brand of controlled madness that sets them apart from other synth manufacturers.
Yeah I’d need to have more of a go with it really.
I’m a big SB fan though, I’ve got all their apps apart from Effectrix. Aparillo, Turnado and Factory are right up there in my top ten.
Exactly what I’m eyeing. Likely my only desktop purchase this holiday.
I’m aware of this. I’ve been using sequencers since the 80s and have been a Mac user for just as long. I’m very much on the power user scale of things. I get Macs. I get iOS. I develop an app for work and know enough about designing a UI to know how tricky and important it is to get things right. And I’ve been making music for 30 years. I know my way around a DAW.
I have my own sensibilities which I’m sharing here.
I have tried AP for enough time to know that the UI is horrible to me. It’s not a case of not giving it time. Quite the opposite
I used it to make a couple of songs from scratch and know it well enough to know I don’t like it.
I’m very confident in my sensibilities and have enough experience to know whether it will click or not.
With AP there are too many decisions taken by the developer that are not my personal cup of tea.
People that like Macs tend not to like the Windows UI and I’m very much in that camp.
Auria Pro doesn’t feel right to me. I don’t need to give it More time to click to know that the things I dislike about it are deal breakers. Especially taken cumulatively.
I am of the opinion that people that like the intricacies of Apple OSes and like the attention to detail you get with the best iOS and Mac apps will probably have similar sensibilities. People that don’t have those sensibilities will feel different I’m sure.
Some people get hung up about the most trivia details but for me AP is no good as it doesn’t do the basics in a way that I personally like.
I think it’s important to know why People don’t like a product.
I think I’ve been fair and balanced and taken care to make it clear why APs UX bothers me to the point that I don’t want to spend time with it.
I’m prepared to put up with a lot of the overal experience is good.
And yes I do have other apps. Apps which I much prefer so there’s no point pushing the cart uphill. Other apps work better for me.
And when iOS apps are not enough I use Logic which is where everything I make ends up eventually.
PS check out the current song of the month thread if you want to hear something from me to (hopefully) show I’m not all hot air and trousers and can actually use these tools to create things. :-)
Pps. It is not my intention to insult or offend anybody. AP clearly works for a lot of you.
My opinions came with a warning that I am pretty fussy about this kind of stuff. :-)
But lots of people are fussy about the things I am and for those hopefully my experiences will count for something? If you read my comments and wonder why the hell I’m complaining about huge tap targets and long presses then AP might suit you much better than it does me.
It’s all good. I hope it’s all taken in the manner in which it’s intended. :-)
I think I’ll leave this here and not comment anymore. I’m happy to continue in a different thread but I’m clogging up this thread too much :-)
It’s on!
Here in Australia at least, not sure about other countries
@GospelMusicians i wanted to buy iFX Rack but it has gone back to 10eur on Nov25 while all of your other apps are still discounted. Is this a mistake or is iFX rack no longer on BF discount? (The appstore description still says 50% off)
Thanks
I would agree that AUM and NS2 have a better UI than Auria, however neither AUM nor NS2 actually have the functionality of Auria - they're completely different apps.
Once NS2 gets audio tracks that may change, but of course it depends on the functionality that comes along with that. Will it be limited like Cubasis, or powerful like Auria? I'm hopeful that NS2 can continue to combine powerful features with an elegant UI (like it undoubtedly has for MIDI), but we won't know until the feature is available.
In the meantime Auria is the only horse in town if you want a powerful and flexible mixing tool on iOS. Many people might choose to do their final mixes on the desktop, but for those of us who want to stay iOS only the choices are what they are.
Personally when I make music I want to get away from the damn computer, which is why I choose not to use desktop (or laptop) tools.
For the record, I do think you were fair and balanced - painstakingly so, in fact. People do differ when it comes to UIs, so it's important to stress - as you have done - that your view is subjective. But it was very detailed, too, and I, for one, appreciate it. I'm still umming and arring about giving it a whirl.
"Because the GUI controls are too small for iOS"
Looks at Thesis…
[uproarious laughter]

Yes, that app is unusable - and my iPad is 12.9"!
Thesys has always been far ahead of its time.
It's going to shine when using a mouse 😂
Thesis zoom is quite good imho. And my iPad is 9.7” ; in any case Thesis is so great that I can live with his GUI.
I confess that I gave u- 😂. Making music should be fun. It shouldn’t require a microscope.
Probably it's meant to be tapped blindly to support happy accidents.
What a great "review" of sorts. I appreciate it. I've often thought of getting AP but I'm probably more than fine with the mixing capabilities I have. At least, for now.
I seriously doubt that audio tracks in NS2 will be of any less standard than the level of the features in the app as it stands now. From what I have seen of the product and what the beta testers have said about him, the dev will not release anything that is not awesome!
NS2 is great. I agree. I look forward to the next update, which may well make it unmatchable on iOS. I’m most wanting the midi effects stuff sorted out, and I’m sure it will be. The software is silky smooth and oozes quality.
About Auria Pro: I am currently mixing a 20 stems + album originally recorded on PC. It has been working great for me. One problem I ran into was zMors Eq was stoping the render process from completing. Wave machine was very helpful in guiding me to narrow to culprit. I can’t say the same for zMors, they never answered me.
I switched to Tonebooster’s line of effect and never looked back.
Thanks @klownshed for your in-depth messages. Intelligent, constructive criticism is always helpful. And it spurred some good discussion. Along with helping the many people on the fence about a rather expensive app (Auria Pro). 👍
Also wondering what happened to the ALL FX IAP price.. it was 50% off a couple days ago and now back to regular price.
The description clearly says it was supposed to be on sale through Cyber Monday
Is it routing / side chaining that makes AP the mixing powerhorse for you?
I wish Thesys would get a UI makeover for iOS. It needs a separate screen for each panel on the main screen, and responsive controls having more of a "native" feel.
All Moog and Bram Bos Apps on sale now
So true. Even when fully zoomed in, adjusting pitches using pixel-sized fader steps is downright annoying. But it looks like SB don't consider UI reworks necessary.
