Chord apps like Suggester” that will play your progressions back
Hi. Curious about which chord apps let you build a progression and will play it back based on tempo and note duration etc..
“Suggester” does this and sends midi out. M I find it very useful in my songwriting process.
There are so many great chord, sequencer, arpeggio apps out there and I have read a ton but never seem to see this mentioned specifically. Can anyone with some of these apps let me know?
Recently bought Tonality app and am loving it and setting up pads to play in AUM - as far as I know it doesn’t do what I described. which is fine, I enjoy that process as well.
I got Chordbot which does this but I have not taken to it. It’s very cheesy and the UI turns me off but will give it some more try’s.
I’ve come so close to getting:
Chordpolypad
Polysteparp
Chordmaps 2
Navichord
The “bud” apps
And looked at others...there are lots of great looking choices.
In this instance I’m looking for it to have the music theory component as well so I can learn and reference while building progressions. Otherwise a good midi sequencer is the option
I love Suggester a lot. The main things it can’t do is let me write different parts to harmonize with each other ( though can workaround this a number of ways)
And it’s a little “stiff” when playing back the progressions... though that’s very nit picky and for final recording I would play it on pads or tweak the midi.
Anyway, thanks for any insight.
Like I said I just can’t find this specific detail anywhere. Leaning towards chord poly pad or just sticking with tonality and Suggester.
Cheers!

Audioshare. (At least, the playback and tempo part of it). Chords Gen is great at making some simple chord progressions.
Edit: It's funny how I had a similar question and you posted an app I was just looking into.
@Samflash3 Ha, I know. Seems like that happens a lot on this forum.
I have AudioShare need to look more into it’s details.
Right now I save midi or audio to audioshare and can run that in AUM while working on another part of the song also in AUM. So that works if I can’t find an app that allows multiple progressions that you can jump back and fourth between editing.
I downloaded the free trial of chords Gen But never purchased. Maybe I should revisit, had forgotten about that. Thanks
I just came across this app SYMPHONY while looking at what’s on sale
https://discchord.com/appDB/id951251308
Looks like it does a lot of what I mentioned..(maybe a bit too much) the price is right so maybe will give it a shot
Let me know how it works. It says there's an in app purchase but I can't tell what it is. Also, how is it compared to on the iPad? I have two iPhones but 1 iPad and I think the iPhone version might be better for me.
Looks like a standalone app wouldn't be enough.
There are a few little details about ChordPolyPad that really make a difference for me:

I’m pretty sure Navichord does all of this.
Tune Maker has this functionality. You can add chords (huge variety) and then use the arpeggiator to play them the way you want
Another option is the chord pads in gr16
@rs2000 Thanks for listing those little details and linking your other discussion - I actually read that the other day. Made a few notes and bookmarked for reference since I had never heard of slide over mode. I also had forgotten CPP was the app being talked about.
@mistercharlie I have navichord lite and the ability to slide and play chords in a “loose”
way was really my favorite part. I have been on the fence even at its sale price.
I am going to get chord poly pad, have been eyeing that one for some time as well as step poly arp. That with tonality, Suggester and then KB-1 keyboard app should totally cover the songwriting and arranging!
Anything else and I might as well just offload myself from the equation..I gotta eventually just dive in
Thanks for the tips
I compose with Chordpolypad, and sometimes secquence chords with Rozetta Cells. You can record CPP right into Cells in Aum.
Does it have midi-out or can it just play internal sounds? Is it auv3? I don’t really find this informations in the store ...
We need something like EZ Keys on iOS. EZK really is the perfect songwriting aid.
does symphony pro have midi out? this could be pretty cool
Hm - yes, the description is long - but I am not sure if this means that it’s exact ... the only things I can spot is that the text speaks about internal sounds and the option to export midi - but no word about midi-out connectivity or AUV3 - so I guess it’s not capable of these essentials functions .. at least essential for me ..,
In crazy iOS-appstore-music-app-universe THIS can mean all or nothing and many things inbetween - this is why I was asking for people who actually use the app - that’s all ...
But I will keep looking for apps including free helicopter rides ...
@Bon_Tempi @tja
I got the impression from the long description that you could export midi ( which I read as “save as midi” ?) but like you all said no midi out.
It also had some pretty bad reviews in a few places I looked. Not always the deciding factor For me but I’m this case...
I feel like it takes a lot to piss off a classical music composer and there were some pissed off classical music composers in the reviews!
Was Chord Poly Pad actually one time in sale ever? I always thought it might be cool, but the lack of AUv3 was my dealbreaker. Slide over seems to be one o the best solutions between AU and IAA (Standalone). Hmmm
EDIT: I got the TONALITY app not TONALY
my mistake! The only reason I caught that was because I read about some worry over possible confusion. Hm. That is a tough one. I have the app and still made the mistake @TonalityApp
Hey, I actually picked up tonality a few days ago. Came across a thread on here from when it first came out and saw how responsive the dev was - taking people’s requests and suggestions and quickly making the app better and better. It also almost fits all my needs. I am really enjoying it and aside from jamming with custom chord pads have already run into a few instances where pulling up the chord ID and scales features were very useful.
yea I think I nearly have the bases covered though I was still going to get chordpolypad I’m sure there is a good amount of features that overlap but would you say they have enough separate features to both be useful?
Old app but good one for putting in one finger progressions and playing them back was Changeling Sequencer. Shame it never got any connectivity as has midi in and out but you can still use it via AB3 virtual midi in generic port. Tried it earlier with FM Tines works a treat. Also since the last update it doesn’t appear to be as buggy.
I’m hoping Tonaly gets midi soon as that will be the bees knees for playing back progressions.
@LowMoses Gah thanks for letting me know. I don’t want to change the name (after all, I had it first...) but the confusion is concerning.
What do you mean by this?
BTW
Have you tried Klimper?
Tonal(IT)y
It’s the name. They changed it a few days ago, former Perfect circle of fifth app
Yea, I understand. Thought I’d tag you since it came up but realize now probably doesn’t help much of anything. Left a rating and review instead because I am getting lots of use from your great app.
Hey! Have not tried klimper.
What I meant was this:
Suggester let’s you pick a key and pull up a bank of chords that are in that key or related to it in a way.
I can then pick a midi destination or use build in sounds (I know tons of apps do this but it’s crucial)
and start “auditioning” those chords by clicking on them to hear how they sound. As I find chords I like they can be added to my song. Can add sections and rests etc. and I can have Suggester play back the whole progression or just sections of it and then pause and rearrange as needed.
Super happy with all this. But what I was trying
To explain above is:
It would be amazing if you could add another instrument “lane” next your current progression that would route to a different midi output and these could be played and built alongside each other so you can easily and immediately hear harmonies, call and response type parts..etc.
I realize there are tons of ways to come close to this ( xequence is pretty much it aside from getting the chords into the progression then into midi without extra steps )
But something about the workflow in Suggester really jives with me.
Does kilmper do anything like this?
Combining tonality and Suggester is something I’m going to try next. Should be great but just requires more setup and fiddling in AUM - which I don’t mind when recording but for getting raw ideas down would love just one app
