  • Yes I use both iCloud and local storage for samples, but mainly local storage/Audioshare

  • 2Tb on iCloud here, and I use it all the time, I don’t have any in local

I haven't found any app that store samples in its iCloud folder (BM3, Gadget etc..) . I think its for a reason :)

    I think so 😉

iCloud is handy for sharing data on all your iDevices like notes, the calendar schedule, contacts and selected photos.

The only one I knew of was Auxy, and in a newer update that shifted back to local storage (or actually, in-app storage).

  • iCloud presets work well in apps like Step Poly Arp and StreamByter as they’re small files but sample storage is problematic in audiolayer as it automatically offloads larger files to save space on the device.

btw. Do you guys store your samples on iCloud? Is there any app that uses icloud drive for sample storage?

I do not and would not because I’m not a paid iCloud subscriber(but I bet there are some on this forum).

I store them locally, in AudioShare or the Files app. I also use Dropbox.

Same here i do the same, its a shame you can’t preview dropbox files via iOS apps (am I mistaken here?), im gonna ask Dropbox about this.

    Yes it is possible.

That would be very useful. Also OneDrive would be useful for me, too.

Egoist now does by default but I turned it off. Unfortunately when you do this it does not show up in ‘Files’ and you have to manage files purely within the app which is not great.

Afaik the beta was not „public“ but invite only.

    No, never.
AudioLayer uses iCloud which is a major p.i.t.a. IMHO. Wouldn't be bad if I could set up my own local iCloud server but that's not possible.
My upload bandwidth is around 200 kbps here so you can imagine how long it could take to upload a new sample set, no matter which cloud storage.

Local file access is always the best, plus a WebDAV server inside the app, like with Apple's iOS apps or Nanostudio 2 or Documents etc, anything that can be mounted as a folder on our desktop machines is good.

I have turned of AudioLayer's iCloud option so that it uses local storage. So, I don't have to worry about having cloud access. I can see that the option might be nice for some people.

indeed you are correct, audioshare does it. maybe BM3? I dont have BM3 on my ipad at the moment.

In Gadget you can choose to save user samples in Local or iCloud.
But there have been problems with the iCloud samples not auto-loading in the project on other devices.

iCloud has proven to be a pretty clumsy solution, so I've never paid to upgrade. I use the free amount to store backups and the rest is full of short drum samples and one shots. Dropbox isn't much better imo. Far too slow and buggy in practice.

Storing samples in the actual App folder structure, so that they can be managed in the Files app is the preferred method for me. especially now that you can use external drives to bulk load samples.

FWIW - I don’t find Dropbox “slow and buggy” at all. I’ve been using it for quite some time for both personal and business use with no issues.

People with different quality internet access will have different experiences with any cloud storage, especially when using it as an "instant storage solution" in which even the best sync mechanism won't be able to speed up the process.

Yes @rs2000 , this is a super valid point. People like me, with a broadband connection often forget this.

I don’t use sample libraries and even have managed to sing praise of 16gb ipads in the past! Now I'm content with a half full 64 and using 80Gb iCloud plan as well as Google Drive that's for some reason recently become back up and sync.
This probably because I used to be an ardent galaxy user up until a month ago.

Now that I'm all apple (sigh) I appreciate much more the blissfully ignorant state of another entity taking care of my hoarded insignificance. I'm slowly learning the way it works until they move the posts again.

Dropbox (free account) has been good to me and supported by many apps but they started to limit to 3 devices (they want our money!) so I only use it occasionally. Well, it's a mess really but for small to medium size sample storage I find Files pretty good. Quick and safe.

With 13 allowing external drives (albeit through death by a thousand dongles) I think sample library users and on ios have never had it this good.

Sorry I've strayed into backup territory but seems like despite all the confusion Files/Cloud for fast Web connection and Files/External storage for slow net folks seem like two obvious choices we could only dream of just over a year ago.

    Did I miss a @Lady_App_titude meme here?

The apps that support WebDAV connections have really been the least hassle for me. They work both with cloud servers supporting WebDAV and locally in your home WiFi, and having the sample folder as a drive on the desktop system for easy file transfer is very, very handy.
Faster than using the Files app.
And WebDAV can even be used directly between iDevices using your local network, with or without internet access! Readdle Documents can also mount WebDAV folders, like e.g. the samples folder of NanoStudio 2 from another iPad or iPhone, and let you preview samples by simply tapping on them.

  • iCloud all the way now for me. I used to swear by Dropbox but iCloud is getting better at a similar rate to the speed at which Dropbox is getting worse.

My number one tip to every single iPhone owner is to pay for at least the lowest storage tier on iCloud. It’s madness not to. It’s very cheap and makes life so much better.

It wouldn’t be necessary if Apple weren’t so stingy with the free tier (which is worse than useless in 2020). 5Gb is criminally small for today’s iPhones.

Dropbox Should be mopping up here but unfortunately they seem to have dropped the ball. In an ideal world I’d have the cheapest iCloud paid tier and a good Dropbox tier but they only seem interested in teams and corporates now. And the Mac Dropbox software gets worse and worse all the time. Shame.

I am also wondering how Dropbox is still around. I cannot think else than people just use it because they did so for years cause it’s been on if the first popular cloud solutions.

Googeln and especially Microsoft offer great cloud storage services which people probably can integrate way better into their workflows.
