I saw it but forgot to write it down on my list. Thanks for reminding me.

If you or anyone else needs a specific tone that the app doesn’t have, I would be happy to make an amp type for it.

To get a really good amp model, all I need is a link to a youtube video or a an audio recording of the tone you want and recording of your guitar played clean with no effects, using the same pickup type and position as the tone in the video (for example Bridge Humbucker or Neck single coil). With those two things we can usually make an amp type that makes your guitar with that pickup sound like the tone in the video.

OK, here's Jeff McErlain, an instructor with TrueFire, describing and performing examples of one of the most iconic guitar tones: Eric Clapton's "Beano" tone from John Mayall's Blues Breakers With Eric Clapton.

There's a lot of talking, but I think the talking is quite valuable in understanding how that tone is achieved.

If you need dry Les Paul clips from me, I can provide them—bridge, neck, and combined.

Thanks. If you have a les paul, I would really like to have a short recording of some blues riffs played dry straight into the ipad. That would make it much easier to get an accurate match of the tone in the video.

This is a good survey of the Amp Simulator "plug-in" marketplace:

    https://www.idesignsound.com/the-best-amp-simulators-on-the-market-right-now

That would indicate how your app would be evaluated if it's marketed as an Amp Sim
plug-in for IOS. How many IOS Apps work in DAW's:

    ToneStack (IAA)
    Amplitube (IAA)
    ToneBrdige (IAA)
    Stark (AUv3)
Midi Guitar 2 (IAA) and as AUv3 Host to add more FX (It's a Host! too).
ReAmp (Limited feature set AUv3) might not pass the sniff test by not emulating classic "Amps"

Sound wise Gain Stage completes but it might get hammered by reviewers but it's he best Plug-in for my money on IOS. I don't want all those 2nd class Stomp Boxes to make it sound even worse.

Do one thing and be the best at it. Don't try to make everyone happy. Make your self happy and sell your vision. It can change the criteria for a plug-in. Sound a plug-in "host" FX.
I know it can but should it? Not in AUM as far as I'm concerned. AUM cables together
a "pedal board". Maybe Gain Stage is a pedal "Amp Sim" plug-in and not a "Guitar Rig emulator". We're all going that way and not back to the all-in-one Amp Sim products.
They all sound flawed to me.

It's the sound! Of course you'll need 100+ Tones in the app to have enough for the market.
Roadmap your vision. Then we can make a thread bitching about having to wait.
Or leave the TestFilght open forever with 10 tones and slip great "tested" Tones into the product.

@Blue_Mangoo : It would be very helpful to have input and output level meters. It has taken me a little while to realize that when using an audio interface for the guitar, one sometimes has to opt for a low signal level to make sure that you don't get digital clipping in the interface itself (if you are someone that plays with a lot of dynamic range). This is a general issue with guitar apps that doesn't happen with hardware amps (even digital ones)

Anyway, with a visual of the the input and output levels, it would help one see whether they need to do some gain management of the incoming signal. And similarly, it would help one see what the output level is, too.

Btw, related to this, I think this is why I am finding dialing tones in easier with Magic Death Eye upstream than not. I need to try your compressor to see if it has the same impact. While MDE does have lovely coloration, it might turn out that in this use-case that it is the level management that is the key thing. (Unfortunately, I'll be away from my guitar most of the next five day and am not sure if I'll be able to test this in the meantime).

I also have a problem with the input levels. Initially I had level metres in the app but they weren’t very helpful for preventing clipping because when the input clips at the audio interface, the digital signal still doesn’t actually exceed 0 dB.

Unlike your audio interface, the amp models in gain stage don’t have any problem with the input coming in too hot. I usually run the plugin with a parametric EQ before the input that I use to boost the gain into distortion. Since I typically run the input far above or below the intended input level, I didn’t find it useful to look at an input meter. There isn’t a “right” input level. It just depends on what tone you want.

Hello @Blue_Mangoo do you plan to work on the metal tones?

I been playing for the last 30 minutes with pre compressor and pre and post eq. I can’t seem to get a thigh sound. It is very muddy and by itself not distorted enough.

I would like to have good metal tone, of course. But I don’t have a guitar appropriate for metal and I don’t listen to metal. So I am waiting and hoping that someone who loves metal will send me a dry recording of a guitar plugged straight into an ipad with no effects or plugins, along with a video link or other recording of an example of the tone they want to get from gain stage. I will adjust the amp settings until the dry recording they sent sounds like the tone in the video link, then I will save an amp type for that. I got one already, someone sent me an ola englund video. If you are interested in helping, please send me a recording and a link like that and I’ll do my best to get your tone into the app.

I've sent you recordings from two different metal guitars with two different sets of humbuckers.

That's right. I refuse to use it because it's free. It's must be crap. How can any small developer compete with Free? Unfair. It's a come-on from the Tab vendor "Ultimate Guitar".
they want more Guitar addicts in the world. "Guitars Not Guns" I can get behind but not
Tab sellers. I subscribed for a year so I know how addicting tab can become. And it's not really rhythmically accurate. Sometimes you need the small details. So, I started learning to
read on guitar. Much better but a long journey of a thousand mistakes.

  • I just used Gain Stage to add some grit to some violins. It's a powerful FX tool. Use it while it free to use. Use it on salads, in soups, and even Hip-Hop. It's got Street Cred too.

Thanks. Actually I got them the first time and already did the acoustic amp settings for them. Sorry about that. I got confused about which email address corresponds to which audiobus forum name.

Those guitars were more difficult to convert to an acoustic sound than mine was. I’m not as happy with the result. But it will work to some degree.

OK, here's Jeff McErlain, an instructor with TrueFire, describing and performing examples of one of the most iconic guitar tones: Eric Clapton's "Beano" tone from John Mayall's Blues Breakers With Eric Clapton.

Is it possible to create an Amp model that behaves like the Marshall with a Les Paul?

He just turns the knobs on the Les Paul, doesn't touch the Marshall or have any A/B pedals and gets 2 completely distinct tones. I didn't even know I needed such a thing until he
    produced this sounds.

Still, I'll take each in a separate Preset and be very, very happy too.

I can do the Preset switching.

If you implement "MIDI Program Change" (and "Bank Select") that would help offer a workaround too. Assuming low latency for PC set-ups. That's probably the best answer to keep it agile... might be tricky and DAW dependent like side-chaining is.

Generally, that's how a good amp should respond—it cleans up when you give it less gain (read: volume) via the guitar.

Yes. However, it is possible to produce a software model that sounds right at one volume level but not at another. Thats especially likely to happen when using the wrong kind of guitar for calibrating the amp voicing. For example, we can use EQ to make a humbucker sound like a single coil at a given volume level but its not likely to sound like the single coil does when we play around with the volume knob.

But assuming you have an appropriate guitar and you set ip the model correctly there is no reason the software amp can’t clean up the same way the real one does.

Apparently, you would need someone that knows how to dial in the tone with the Gidson's
volume/tone knobs for each pickup for each sound into a Marshall with the Volume maxed out. 2 Les Paul volumes might mss some aspect of the pick up settings and Tone tweaks.

Anyway, keep going. I'm enjoying find new uses for this FX for tone shaping. I wanted to dirty
up some strings and just flipped though the presets to get more grunge. It still sounds pristine without the masking the others seem to insert with the distortion.

  • Thanks @Blue_Mangoo for Gainstage. I love how it sounds (played with Strandberg Boden OS7). I’m all for a simple app without any effect pedals. Keep it simple and good sounding!

  • General status update:

In response to feedback from customers, I am working on improving the high gain models. When I designed this plugin I spent most of the time making it sag like old tube-rectified amps do. At this point it is clear that sagging like that doesn’t work for high gain sounds.

So I’m working on getting a solid-state rectifier sound that will have tighter distortion at high gain settings.

Solid-state? Are you going after the Pantera sound? Don’t forget the all tube 5150 which is the reference as metal amp goes. That’s what I have sitting right next to me 😁

Also the all tube hot rodded Marshall jcm 800 for that 80’s glam metal sound.
