Hi, just bought Sector and the app is amazing!Just a FR : Make a "LOCK" switch ,so when sector "A" jumps to another "B" ,then playback will continue to sector "A+1" instead of "B+1".Hope you understand what I suggest! That way ,the main beat stays!
@firejan82 Thank you for sharing the video!
I think you can use the Seq section to lock any essential beats. Would that work?
@Fitz Yes ,but it could be much easier with a simple "lock" button!
Great app and @j_liljedahl very good & understanding manual!
the possibility to adjust the AMP/PAN/Pitch for a sector will be very welcome...
thx!
+1 @obiwahnkentobi
Man, this app is already superb and has infinite potentials!
tl;dr
I think its great
u can import audio from mp4 movies, no need to strip the video from the audio
Had this app since it came out... didn't 'get it' at all when I had a quick 5 minute play.
Went back to it a few days ago and... WOW. The possibilities are just amazing, it works so nicely and it's so easy to experiment and come out with cool sounding stuff.
Also- just read through this 5 page thread and I realise just how many of the suggestions the dev has incorporated into the latest release as it stands now. So impressive.
One question / feature request... I assume when you preview a sector (while the loop isn't playing) there's no way to have it apply the warp (based on the probabilities set?). That way you could preview what each warp would sound like. You could also record and create cool individual warped slices for use elsewhere.
Thanks! Actually yes you can preview the warps while stopped: either by tapping the warp slots while in the WRP page - you'll then hear that warp applied to the currently selected sector. Or if you want to get a feeling of the probability, assign a sector to one of the trigger buttons, and tap the trigger button - it will play the assigned sector just as if it was chosen while playing, including the WRP probabilities.
Also note that selecting a warp shape from the menu previews the warp if the engine is not playing.
Wow, great question and answer. I hadn't really considered either. I need to spend some time with the trigger buttons. Are those MIDI addressable?
Yes, thanks, @j_liljedahl
Again, amazing... Sector is such a groundbreaking piece of design. Your answer above means I can preview what every warp possibility of every sector sounds like - audiobus recording the ones I like, to later import to Gadget for very controlled sequencing/integration - or simply just informing how I then set the warp probabilities for playback in Sector.
Could I ask another question? I thought I read in the manual that I could record in Sector, in a kind of step sequence, sector by sector by manually hitting each sector myself (with the play head stopped). Is that right? And if so, how please? And does it record the warped sectors using your tip above? (Sorry, that's 3 questions!).
@syrupcore: There's currently no MIDI control of SECTOR, but that's on my TODO as well.
@Matt: Yes, if the REC button is on while engine is stopped, tapping a sector will append it to a new recording. Tapping a trig button (Txx) will append the assigned sector, including warp. If the four trig buttons are not enough, just tap and hold one of them and then tap any sectors in sequence.
I see that when doing this (step recording), the step count indicator above the rec button isn't increasing but staying at 00, so you currently get no feedback of how many steps you have recorded so far.. Will fix this in an update!
^ everything in this post is awesome.
what??? Now I really really need to spend an evening with Sector. I didn't know about either of these things!
MIDI control would be great. Not sure what you have in mind but being able to simply address each slice starting a C2 or whatever would be an awful lot of fun.
^ same to both of those!
MIDI thoughts... I reckon you've already thought through all of this but vomiting this onto the page while I'm thinking about it. Some of this might be overkill. Slices and slots alone addressable via MIDI would rule. Not a request, just thinking out loud...
Hit a key to trigger the slice. While held:
Another CC to adjust the sample playback rate
All the memory slots on the screen addressable
SH< and SH>could be fun too!
I don't own one of those Ableton style clip launchers but the thought of one of those with a few rows mapped to slices and a few rows mapped to the step sequencer... man.
Thanks again @j_liljedahl... Just such a well made app multiplied by being one of, or THE, most innovative. I need to try the above out.
Is there a maximum loop length? I had another idea recently that one could come up with a fixed chord progression and lots of, say, 2 bar phrases in the different chords (16 or even 32 of them) and then programme scector to move between them semi randomly but obeying rules that followed the chord order. Plus apply lots of weird warps. If you see what I mean... So essentially creating a kind of generative music layer that obeys a fixed chord progression.
Might try it one day...
@j_liljedahl Ha, I had no idea about how the record button works when the engine isn't running. Fantastic. Is there any way to run a 'blank' (or muted) sector if your imported sample has (for example) 32 beats in its 32 sectors? I know this isn't the intention of the app, but it would be pretty cool to be able to have a silent sector sometimes to break up the beat. Maybe a velocity control for every sector would allow that? Is that already in there somewhere?
What I'm thinking is that you could have even more ways to configure your beat if you had silent sectors as an option even if your sample doesn't contain any. Hey, maybe silence could be a 'warp' type!
Or you could have a velocity probability slider in the same way that you have the warp slider (ie. velocity at full for that sector is 50% probability, velocity at half for that sector is 25% probability, etc etc).
Or, indeed, you could have velocity options on the sequencer page which are configured in the same way as the probability options (using the circles).
Maybe silence and velocity changes are possible already, though, in which case I apologise for being dense!
Yeah, I have several thoughts about silence, volume, envelopes.. One thought is to include an extra silent sector (perhaps in the middle of the circle?) that can be used just like any other. Another thought is adding an ENV page with amplitude envelopes similar to WRP, where one can also control the level. And another thought is extending SEQ so that one can also override WRP's and ENV's in there, not only triggering sectors.. Then I want to add another "channel", so one can have beats in one and melody/bass in another. And MIDI control of everything. And so on... It never ends!
+1 on adding channel(s)..! And FX channels too!
That all sounds great. Envelopes would make for some nice extra variation.
Maybe in the interim, silence could simply be just another warp type (without having to change / code anything else complicated)? Have seen a few people ask for this.
But anyway - it's extemely fantastic as it is.
Using a warp for silence is an interesting way to solve it! But it would mean one has to special-case a specific warp shape. Sure, a straight horizontal line shape would make it silent, but add DC offset due to the first sample being held for the whole slice, introducing unwanted clicks..
One more midi thought, whole new app applying the same processes to midi clips rather than audio unlikely probably but I would buy it if it existed.
Count my voice in support for a silent sector (my new sci-fi film... :P) -- either through warps or the ability to have a silent/muted step in the step sequencer. with respect to the latter idea, I think I've already suggested it (so I don't mean to be a pest!)
Envelopes would rule!
Can we use the existing warp setup to control amplitude? Like, literally the same feature set copied but applied to amplitude instead. Plus a silent shape.
Hmm, that couldn't vary volume each time unless there were shapes for 0, 25%, 50%... Or something. Maybe 3 envelope slots as well as a single volume slider? Slider could have a range on it for randomization but that doesn't indicate probability.
Just looking through the samples I made specifically for importing into Sector and I forgot that towards the end of my last several night love affair with it I started purposefully including a silent sector.
@syrupcore: Yep, that's what I'm thinking too, exactly like WRP but for amplitude envelopes. The problem is, as you say, that one also needs to be able to scale them. Not sure how that should work, but I'm leaning towards a toggle that switches between displaying the usual probability sliders and new level scale sliders. So each slot would have three values: the shape, probability, and level scale.
I picked this up last week and promptly lost a couple of hours on the amen break samples included. It was mid-nineties jungle night in my house. Fantastic app with a really solid set of functions and a great sound.
@Jonatan: two channels of sector? You are making my head spin!

may it never end

On the other hand I am not sure if I would like to run two channels of sector through the same fx, I guess not.
