Is the Swam Solo string Bundle worth it for someone who has Beathwawk(Doublebass and string/orchestra iaps) and Ns2( Acoustic 1/2 iaps)?
I also just would use them with kb-1/velocity keyboard. Or would it be a waste of money in that case?

im mostly interested in the Cello and double bass but would take the others as a bonus in the bundle.

BeatHawk Strings sound pack can't compare with SWAM solo strings.
BeatHawk Strings is for ensemble and is very good for that whereas SWAM is for soloing. But I guess you already know that.

Regarding string solo, I still think Finger Fiddle is unbeatable. This is the virtual instrument in the world that come the closest to a real cello/violin, thanks not only to its excellent sound engine but also its natural playing surface. Almost everything is thought to react like a real cello. You can do tremolos the way you want, attack notes the way you want, pizzicato, etc. all this without having to switch to another "playing mode".

Now for SWAM, don't get me wrong. They are excellent and offer a full integration as AUv3 into a DAW. I bought the bundle and, thanks to the power of my new iPad M1 and a dedicated Streambyter script, I managed to create a full chamber orchestra (3 instruments per sections) and it sound incredibly good

+4 on FingerFiddle. It is amazing. You definitely have to learn how to perform it. But really takes advantage of 3D Touch and the playing surface compared to others.

Having played a real violin for years, I agree FingerFiddle is the real deal. It is awkward to coordinate the correct finger positions on the virtual neck, but if you can approach some level of mastery of the app, it blows away anything you can get out of SWAM. I’m surprised that particular developer hasn’t done more with his instrument modeling expertise.

Yes, the dev Matthias Demoucron has intensively studied the gesture in musical performance and published a thesys about "virtual violins ***" : https://tel.archives-ouvertes.fr/tel-00349920/document
FingerFiddle, it is like if his "obsession" and all these knowledges have finally come to the world.
After the passing years, I am still very impressed by the result achieved (by a single person !) and no other app comes close to this regarding virtual acoustic instrument. A true masterpiece of programming...

100% worth it. Nothing compares. Nothing.

Agreed, totally worth it. Being able to tweak the harmonics, bow position and bow pressure on the fly can lead to some unreal timbres. I thought they were expensive at first, but when I automated the harmonics control with a step sequence in Drambo, I realized these were the most incredible strings software I've ever used. You can push these far beyond then their 'intended' use. I don't think you'll be disappointed @Nathi94

Yea that’s what appeals to me a lot, beeing able to tweak some stuff to change the timbres and also having the dry sound from it without the reverb like in some sample based. I’m not planning writing some classical music so the price is a big high for me. But like you said the control makes it also perfect to pushed into other things

Just wanna demonstrate a few of the sounds you can twist out of the double bass. Some of it sounds so good, distorted and metal to me. You can get super experimental with these.
I remember you use Drambo - messing with the exposed parameters is more fun than it has any right to be.

Thanks for that. Great timbres! I will try to emulate this approach in AUM with Rozeta lfos.

  • Finger Fiddle is amazing. SWAM is very good but Finger Fiddle is next level...but requires practice...it is like a real instrument unto itself.

No. It is really meant to be performance based. No midi in or out. Not AUv3 (because one should be focused on performing in one instance). It is worth learning.

Of course! Yes I can see if you have the skills to play a real violin, then that would be more appealing for sound/realism. This is nice to be used for all 4 parts of a quartet, but does require some skill. Best sounding cello on iOS, if you put in the time.

Yeah, a good sounding violin app or samples are useful when composing
and one can't pull out the instruments at three in the morning.

Still, I'll keep it on my shopping list for when I've got some free time.

The thing is (and why midi input doesn't make sense) is that it is so responsive to how you bow it...both where your you bow and how fast..that much would be lost with midi control imo. And so much control over pitch. And the sound quality is amazing.

There is a video of an Indian musician playing that sounds like real sarangi.

Yes, I am sorry to say to all the people who think « it doesn’t have midi in ? ah, well I think I will pass » : as @espiegel123 said, it can’t have midi in because it wouldn’t make sens. FingerFiddle couldn’t be as good as it is if its sound engine could be simply triggered by conventional note-on / note-off midi messages. When you play FingerFiddle, you understand that there can’t be any midi equivalence.

  • Yup.

    Very cool.

It's strange to be playing a screen.
One doesn't get the feedback that one gets from a traditional instrument
so that will take practice to get it to a more complex level.

I would have to change the angle of the iPad
as it's currently in it's normal position.

    It's quite convincing sound wise.

    I'm listening on headphones.

    Here's a thought.

When composing one visuals a piece being played by people.

When recording, getting across that sense of realism
can be quite awkward when using sequencers.

What makes the difference is the subtle timing of the parts themselves.

Recording Fingerfiddle parts using a looper would be very interesting indeed.

    I may try it next.

    One moment.

I also think that one could up the realism of a MIDI string section by having one of the parts played or doubled with FingerFiddle...kind of the way Pete Townshend used real violin in quadrophenia along with the synthesized strings.

Yes, there’s a learning curve. But for someone who is used to the interplay of hand movement as a classical instrument player or even for a guitarist, it should be a relatively smooth learning curve.

Yes, there’s a learning curve. But for someone who is used to the interplay of hand movement as a classical instrument player or even for a guitarist, it should be a relatively smooth learning curve.

    Agreed.

I'm a guitarist rather than a violinist though
I've added violin to the list of instruments that I study.

I already have a basic track happening.
Very simple pizzicato and legato notes to hear the modelling
and to hear how it combined together as a cohesive sound.

I'll take my time to get to it know it.
