I've currently got an iPad Air 128gb and an iPad 4 16gb. I'll likely sell the iPad 4, and start saving pennies for the iPad Pro 128gb. I can't go back to anything smaller than 128gb.
No big hurry, though. I'm fine where I'm at, but I suspect it will happen eventually.
Wow no one after the 32gb ¯_(ツ)_/¯
I've only ever had 16gb iPads.. I guess using it as a module rather than a workstation makes a big difference, auria and cubasis probably eat up gbs with all that audio recording
End of next year? As it is, no not this year. End of next year is at least one feature/hardware iteration (and many developer app releases) away so who knows.
Not this year. The cost and size are too prohibitive for me, so maybe never. Not to say that it isn't a cool piece of tech, but I'm more interested in what happens to the Air 2 now, and looking for either a sale or a refurb. Alternatively, the iPad Mini 4 interests me - it is basically the guts of an Air 2 into a smaller device. But $399 for 16GB and $499 for 64GB, so that pricing basically requires you to get the more expensive one.
I'm still on "2011's finest" (the iPad 2). It does work for music production, and I can run most of the newer apps. But as a guitar player, there are serious limitations in terms of getting things to run and record without audio problems and latency. I really thought I would have upgraded out of necessity by now, but the Air 1 and Air 2 didn't blow me away in terms of performance upgrades. Obviously, I would prefer to have a newer, faster device, but this is very much a casual hobby. Tough to justify $500+ on a single device for my needs.
Doesn't have the Apple Pay support I wanted, otherwise I would preorder ASAP. Will look for deals near the end of the year and will buy if there is a good deal. Otherwise certain to upgrade by the end of next year, but probably will wait for Pro S release next Fall if I fall into next year. Need to upgrade my iPad 4 soon, its getting too old, I am afraid I may start losing apps with the iOS 9 upgrade. Will get maxed out model, don't need pencil or keyboard.
Like I've said before, I live with my iPad and use it as my phone as well. I do a lot of music on it, but thats probably still less than 30% of what I use it for. Phone, reading, manuals, photography with my DSLR, live Basketball, Football, and other sports, movies, all kinds of TV, notes, lists, etc.etc.etc, just too much to even list. I have a new MacBook Pro retina I use a lot too, but I have the iPad on more than 50% of the time I'm using the MBP, i.e. watching a game, using the metronome on my iPad, etc. When I am doing Music I always have both my iPad and MBP on and attached to my iConnectAudio4+.
The opposite of @DD829 actually. If and when my Windows lappy dies, (and it IS getting on in years, but I'm hoping that will be later rather than sooner) I will, probably, replace it with the iPad Pro rather than a new laptop, if I can afford it at the time; but then again I would prefer to wait until the next generation...
However, if the iPad Air 3 gains Pencil support I might get that instead as I like the smaller formfactor,, it's just right, not too small like the Mini or too big like the Pro. All depends on the situation when the time comes; and of course I haven't held the Pro yet, I might turn out I do like the size after all.
BTW I think it's a (alas, typical) ridiculous move of Apple to offer 32 Gb as the base model and no 64gb at all...especially with that large screen.
For now, though, my existing iPads are more than enough.
I've wanted this thing since the first rumors started about it. The real question is do I get the pencil?
I use my Air as/with a music stand. Works very well. It's a little (just a hair) small, so this will be an improvement. It's of course, an extreme amount of money for simply one application. Fortunately, it does other things
Sooner or later developers need to port complete desktop versions. I'm thinking, it will start with a single instance, and then hopefully a trend will evolve.
But really, this is the type of thing where you don't know until you try it; for those who are unsure. Buy one, give it a couple months. For me, i'm fairly certain now.
For me it depends on price difference between the next 128GB iPad Air and the iPad Pro. The large screen is very tempting.
At the moment not too interested, but that could change if music apps come out that actually take advantage of that new screen space in a meaningful way.
Unless I get a load of digital artwork jobs in, I'll get one when my Air 2 is no longer viable - and if it lasts like my iPad 2 will mean I'll be using the Air 2 for at least another three years.
I don't see the Pro as a laptop replacement either, the software and functionality isn't a patch on what you can do on a MacBook.
The iPad Pro has one killer use for me - digital art via the pencil, otherwise it's an easy resist.
I can't decide if my future studio / live setup in a bag consists of two IPad Air2s or one Air2 and a MacBook. Either options hooked up to a iConnect Audio 4+
I am wondering why no one thinks that almost doubling the speed (1.8x) of the processor in the Pro over the Air 2 is of any use? Its faster than 80% of the PC laptops sold this year according to Apple. How many more apps does this mean running in AudioBus or more tracks in Auria? I can't wait to run Flux:FX on it .
What about actually doubling the GPU speed over the Air 2? You can edit three streams of 4K videos at the same time in iMove. Again Apple claims the GPU speed is faster than that of 90% of the PC laptops sold this year.
For musicians I'd think the four stereo speakers would be a big deal; they certainly are for me, but I need to hear them to know for sure, but the ones in iPad 4 are pretty useless unless you compare them to phone speakers.. Note the almost cell phone sized, but thinner, baffles behind each speaker in the iPad Pro Design page. Here is the short description:
They also mention 3x the audio output, wonder if that includes the headphones, iPad headphone output had traditionally been pretty weak.
For people like me with older iPads the cpu is 10 times faster than my iPad 4. Thats pretty much a no brainer to me.
EDIT: Also 2x the write to storage, how many music apps write to storage as they run? I expect most DAWs do.
For me I'll wait to see, not just looking at the iPad Pro, Surface and detachable laptops may be the way to go.
I'd rather see a touch-screen 'MacBook Air' to replace my current MacBook Air with some day.
Currently I've got the 64GB iPad Air 2 Cellular that I'm more than happy with
I might replace my aging iPhone 5 with something newer as my eyesight are starting to get bad.
I don't think so, the larger size offsets the portability appeal of the current ipads. I'd be more interested in the 6S, actually.
I'm wondering if that promise will actually deliver, considering the larger amount of pixel redrawing the processor and graphics card will have to cope with. I bought a retina 5k iMac, and while on some things it was fast, other tasks it did very badly - .pdf handling was almost unusable when zooming in, and there were glitches when using the Control Centre and other standard OS tasks. In many areas the iMac was slower than my three year old non-retina Macbook Pro.
if you watch the Pencil video, there is a definite lag there. I'm not convinced...I reckon the Pro 2 will be the one to go for, just as I'm waiting for an iMac refresh.
Yeah this could well end up having the same issues that the iPad 3 had and that it is a big chunk of change if they rush out pro 2 like they did with the 4.
Yeah I noticed this when they were showing close-ups with the drawing. It only takes a tiny amount of lag to make drawing feel artificial, not impossible to use but a natural lag-free response is what they are suggesting.
Definite buy for me before the end of this year, with the Pencil too. I currently have an iPad2 so this will be a huge leap in performance, I like the larger form factor (better for playing on the screen) not to mention its like getting a Cintiq as well!
The Pro is a definite maybe for me. Mainly it will depend on how things go with the OS and usability. If iOS and IAA are still dodgy then I don't care how much CPU speed or screen real estate there is. A more expensive iPad that continues to raise my blood pressure and cause me to spout off obscenities doesn't appeal to me.
That is all fine but i still can't handle files, have no "full" web browser, just one lightning connection, can't use extern SSD.
It is an impressive tool and has power but the software is limiting it again.
Also we have to see if the CPU settles down and getting hot.......
I really love touch screen editing but i think it's a bit to big and heavy to hold it all day, especially while laying on the couch and hold it in fron of my face (like my iPad Air).
When i sit down and place it in my legs or a table a notebook is much better.
But for sure i will visit an apple store and try it.
Yes! Now that last years phones are cheaper ill be ditching the 5 for the 6plus.
Ipad pro would be cool but im sure ill get next years model.
@nic_b_nice That's what I'm thinking about too, remains to be seen how much lower the 6+ price (without contract) will be one the new models arrive here in Sweden... I am however tempted by the new camera in 6S to replace the plethora of less that often used compacts I have.
And I'm guessing that's with the fastest setup they could get - there'll be more lag when working on big, or multi-layered files.
As someone who uses a Wacom tablet the Pro could be a dream come true, but any lag just doesn't work for me....might as well stick with the Air 2.
Problem being you can't run Photoshop, Painter etc. like you can on a Cintiq. If I was in the market for a new pad I'd probably go for the Pro though.
They should enable the use of bluetooth mice and trackpads for this. Then it could be used for higher precision things like CAD. Rhino for iOS would be awesome. And then some 3rd party manufacturers would probably come up with keyboard and trackpad cases for it to make it even more macbook like. Would be cool.
I don't think lag is going to be too much of an issue - I've used used various Cintiqs, Tablet PCs, and iPad stylii over the years and lag has never been the thing that's bothered me. On the iPad the biggest problems have always been lack of precision and palm rejection. The precision definitely looks sorted, can't get a definitive answer on palm rejection so will probably have to wait for more hands-on reports for that.
Anyway, would really like to see Wacom given a run for their money. Personally I find their products insanely overpriced, and frankly lacking in quality. Cintiq screens always have the worst colour I have ever seen anywhere, shockingly bad considering the price they go for, and Cintiq stylii also have a habit of being jittery near the edges. Tablet PCs have usually been much better drawing devices than Cintiqs in my fairly extensive experience, but sadly never got the brand recognition that Apple and Wacom have. So if Apple can challenge them a bit with the iPad Pro, that should be good for everyone.
Yes, will have it November 1st. (birthday gift to self)
Already have. AIR and a 4 along with the IPHONE6 plus currently.
Getting new IPhone 6 plus this weekend.
New MacBook for Xmas.
In the meantime I am deciding on a new toy and considering grabbing a ReFace DX or MINI-NOVA.
I want a "travel" synth for easy use and transport and they seem best at this time for mobility.
All I want to know is if the Mini 4 has 2gb RAM.
The Mini form factor has suited me best.
The Mrs.' Mini 2 crapped out a few weeks ago, but her needs were pretty well met by its power. Think I'll give her mine (same model) and upgrade to a Mini 4, but only if it rocks 2gb.
I will definitely be seeing if older model iPhones come down in price, although if ios9 makes the 4s more useable than 8 did I'll continue to use it. But it's starting to get glitchy with ios8.
I haven't used a Cintiq - was thinking of getting one last year but went for a better Wacom tablet instead. Absolutely zero lag with that.
One thing about the lag is that the bigger and more complex the brush, the bigger the potential lag. If there's a delay using a small brush as there is in the Pencil vids, then it'll definitely be noticeable with bigger brushes.
Personally I can't cope with drawing lag...it's like latency when you're trying to play a midi keyboard, throws me completely.
