  • Missed opportunity, considering most people have been asking for osx for a while now....think it's time I get that Surface pro.

  • Nope, iOS devices are weak when it comes to the kind of "pro" work that I would like to do, which doesn't include office stuff, graphics or music.

The price is utterly ridiculous, MBA makes much more sense in that price category.

  • iPad Air owners will not like this new toy. Why? It's suddenly made the Air look "old". As an Air 2 owner myself, I will sell it and buy the iPad Pro. My iPad 4 will remain. I can just visualize amazing new apps being created for this big screen iPad. They will quickly become common place in pro studios. I can just imagine Apple's Remote app for Logic Pro X running on this thing and controlling Logic with Alchemy etc etc Good times :)

Really? The only difference, apart from the keyboard and Pencil add-ons, and better speakers, is that it's bigger.

Going by the lacklustre reaction I've seen online to it, I doubt it's going to be as big a seller as the Airs and Minis have and will continue to be. Which means it could become a bit of a niche product, and you might not get developers clamouring to make new apps to support it.

I think Apple have played things too safe and conservative with this release.

LOL. Apart from everything, it's no different!!!!

  • Wonder how long until an easel is released for the iPad 'artist', mmmm pro.

It isn't though, it's probably 90% exactly the same as an Air 2 isn't it, and if developers don't all rush to build apps specifically for this device, or they run (albeit smaller) on other iPads, then the differences will be minimal.

Don't get me wrong, if I was still on my iPad 2 I'd consider the Pro against an Air 2 (though at double the price it'd be a hard sell to Mrs Monzo), but apart from the Pencil, and bigger size (which might not always be a good thing anyway) the new pad's a bit of a damp squib of a release.

Actually thinking realistically, all things considered, I reckon given the choice I'd still probably go for the Air 2.....unless that Pencil feature is extra darned good...

  • I'm interested in the larger screen but like @monzo said developers will have to make apps or we will get the dreaded x2 upscale. But even if they just updated CURRENT apps it would be worth it. Imagine Gadget, Auria, or Cubasis with more tracks accessible on the screen, and being able show more octaves and longer measures for MIDI step editing. ReBirth would look awesome on a large screen! As the old saying goes "size does matter".

I think Rebirth will look bloody awful as they probably won't update it!

I agree with everything else you've said, but I think for me the size is just that bit too big to sit comfortably in an armchair, noodling with, which is how I do nearly all my music. If I'm going to sit there with something that big I might as well use my laptop, and play with Logic and Maschine instead. I can see how it'd be a benefit for gigging and desktop work, but doesn't really fit my work donkey.

I'll probably change my mind completely when the videos start coming out though...

Imagine Cubasis with video track support like in Cubase. I'm already seeing myself working on a film score drawing notes on the piano roll with an apple pencil :)

    Gonna look something like this.

4gb of ram should be fine for plenty of stuff, benchmarks will be interesting to look @
apple chips better than Intel m?
Apple obviously seams to know what they're doing.

  • Where you get the 4GB ram from? Seems i missed it some where.
What really is odd that they don't write such important specs in the tech description. No..... we have to wait for a teardown and benchmarks before we know for sure.

That is a no go since especially the RAM was/is always the biggest bottleneck on iPads.

Then i would like to know more about the CPU. Can it do hyperthreading. How many cores?

All this should be written before someone buy when they made it for "pro" usage.

I just hopw i can get a macbook with 32GB ram soon ;)

  • It's the iPad plus in everything but name. They should have at least created some new software for it to give it better access, How pro is to transfer files using iTunes? not too pro at all actually...

However a bigger screen size is still important enough to be very useful for me..I would be tempted without an Air 2, but think I'll wait until pro 2 at least, by then there maybe some proper pro apps available.

I need a new laptop this year and was hoping they would create a laptop replacement hybrid, this isn't it so a new laptop comes first for me.

I actually hope not too many people buy it, so the next generation they are forced to add some proper extras to tempt people.. And entry level on the pro should be 128GB.....32GB is a basic feature of most smartphones, think Apple look really silly here.

  • Clearly size is the main attraction with the iPad Pro, until we find out what the performance is like. Although we have seen pictures of a small woman holding it as if is it is one of those giant cheques you see in local newspapers, the reality is that the screen on this thing is smaller then an A4 pad.

One layout which might be pretty useful would be AudioBus remote as the sidepanel with all your currently opened apps in a vertcial list with the main part of the screen showing the app you are currently working in. I think that would speed up wotking with several synths and a DAW if you could easily/quickly switch between them.

That's the only thing that that is giving me pause because you really don't know how it handles unless you buy the thing.

I don't know how the iPad is sold in the U.K. but in addition to the Apple Store and independent dealers, we have a few big box stores like Best Buy that offer great trade in specials. They also have a no hassle 14 day return policy that would give you a chance to try it.

They are huge! The A4 reference however is about the weight not the screen size. It weighs about the same as an iPad 1. The screen is 12".

Nope, an A4 sheet is just over 14inches diagonally. That is the comparison I was making.

  • And iPad Pro is 12.9", so nearly A4, which is why it will be great for reading and creating A4 content like sheet music.

We're stuck with Apple prices in the UK - even third-party stores that sell them stick to Apple RRP's. Apple do a 14 day return thing, so that's possible, or picking one up as far as the security cord will allow, in a store.

I won't be buying one anyway, I'm happy with the Air 2 for now - just not enough extra whistles or bells to justify the cost for me. My thoughts are turning towards upgrading my Mac laptop, and maybe buying some new software for that....Reason is taking my fancy again, along with some of the new Native Instruments stuff...

I'd rather get a laptop for a few hundred more. I love my iPad Air I think it's great but I'm always asking friends to do music stuff for me on thier computers.

  • I will probably get a refurb Air2 or just upgrade my old ultraportable to Surface Pro.

  • Looking forward to the Surface Pro 4.

Ha ha! Didn't think of that. Must admit I am kinda tempted by this but it won't be a purchase I rush into.. Probably ;)

thought I would but looking at the price and specs am maybe leaning toward getting a refurb air2 and a windows tab hybrid thing for best of both worlds form same cash. Anyone using a touch screen windows hybrid to run pc music software/plug ins/daw?

  • I'm to spoiled by good multitouch software for the hybrid thing. :)

  • Can't wait for content blockers.
finally the net will look normal on iOS. :)
