Here's my unadulterated play with Fieldscaper - very difficult for me not to fiddle with this - even just reversing the right channel made it sound better but resisted the temptation, instead to demonstrate exactly what it actually does. Recorded live into Audiobus, my second only play with it:

Large. What are the source sounds?

I love this app, looking forward to working out how to put live feeds through it, Doug's vid will be useful for this - I fear my SOTM is getting hijacked again. How are you getting on with it?

That was totally, trippy cool. Thanks for sharing. I'm a sucker for Sci-Fi soundscapes and that was definitely the kind of stuff that makes you say stupid things to yourself in amazement, like, "Andrei Tarkovsky called and he wants his soundtrack back."

    :)

You could do a nice video for that with MVGEN. :)

Thanks, don't know that one...will have to investigate:)

One of my mental mates rattling on about something or other, a recorded in sample of me grunting, and an old bit of guitar I recorded. You can only really make out that one, the rest are mangled beyond recognition.

    Thank you very much!

Really it was just a quick, live test thing - I think this app is going to get a lot if use over the next few months. Maybe played live with Soundscaper and Fugue Machine for an Orb-like space World workout.

I think the trick is to pick your samples carefully, and avoid going overboard with the mangling - though obviously I did neither of these. Look forward to hearing what others come up with.

  • If you could feed the sound from imagery around you via Alexander Zolotov's Nature-Oscillator app into Igor's Fieldscape app, we could listen to the Fourth Dimension ...

Is it Audiobus compatible? I guess you could if you ran Nature-Oscillator on your phone and recorded this into your iPad.

One of the things I'm really liking about Fieldscaper is the quality of the filters, they're really lush.

  • SoundScaper, FieldScaper...How much are the in common? Like friendly brothers?

Actually, what I want to say is "two many great apps and no cash enough" :(

    very nice :)

I really like Soundscaper but it seems to automatically lo-fi the samples you input to 8bit (I think) which is cool but Fieldscaper can keep them at higher bitrates (unless I missing some settings in Soundscaper)

I haven't worked out how to play the samples with a keyboard yet, is that possible? seems like he's doing that for a bit in the demo vid...unless he's just midi learned the keyboard for triggering, or playing a live feed?

  • @monzo I see that AB FX slot accepts this app... Have you ascertained if the oscillators / filters can be used to tweak a live signal w/out first loading / recording it into FS?

  • @Carnbot said:

It seems to do something with the processing but you can convert the samples in soundcaper to 8bit.

Thanks, yes I've never managed to get the hang of using samples in Soundscaper - much easier in this one.

I'm pretty sure it can be done, after watching his vids. That's next on my list if things to try out though so will confirm if it's possible.

  • @monzo Too beaucoups!

  • Ok I have another feature request (here they come), to be able to save your 3 sample set up as a scene snapshot like in soundscaper...can't see how that's done here, I don't think you can. I hope he adds this.

And then also to be able to midi learn controls to jump between saved scenes.

I just came here to ask the exact same question. Is there a way to save your own presets at least?

Yes you can save presets, if you double tap on the preset slot you get options.
Audiobus state saving works too I think which helps to save scenes but I still would like to see scene saving and ability to switch between via midi.....

Here's a little fieldscape piece that I put together tonight. Audio clip, banging in the kitchen sink, and picking a few guitar chords. It's the most fun I've had with an app in a long time.

  • @Coloobar Like it plenty. You and Mister Monzo must start a kitchen orchestra.

  • Was occupying @monzo's recently vacated spot on the fence with this one. Not sure yet whether it will become a permanent nest as I pressed the button fairly soon after Doug's walk through.

    First impressions:

    • It's easy to get into shimmery soundscape territory but you don't have to. Can equally be used for more subtle effects on audio as for mangling sounds beyond recognition.
    • The sound quality is excellent.
    • The echo is particularly smooth and doesn't produce digital artefacts when trying dub style speed ups and slow downs.
    • Most parameters can have an independent LFO assigned.
    • LFOs have a switchable range of either 1-10 seconds or 10-90 seconds!
    • Works brilliantly on iPhone 6S.
    • File handling looks very comprehensive. Also copy and paste.

    Cons:

    • Haven't discovered how to zoom the waveform panel on iPhone. Makes loop marker placement a bit imprecise.
    • it is affected by the iPhone (6/6S?) bug where it won't work if you don't have headphones plugged in. Just be warned that if you want to make random field recordings you will need to plug some phones in to get a recording.
    • Only 1 level of modulation. I.e. I didn't see a way to modulate the LFOs.

All told I think it will become a regularly used tool for me, even though I don't create ambient soundscapes as such. The capacity to generate inspiring audio vignettes with three tracks is a near perfect thing in its own right and can provide hours of fun. The effects have their own character and will, I think, become very useful even on more conventional recordings.

And I'm sorted now if I ever have to score a film set on a submarine!

  • @Jocphone +1

    Das Reboot?

It is a certainly interesting app/piece of work.

  • 2 thumbs up!

  • So I had a chance to show a couple musician friends downtown tonight how awesome looping anything that's happening and then mangle the ish outta it while still monitoring the live feed and also making another loop can be...

Jocphone has some nice points but the LFOs modulate and you can set the time from real slowwww to stupid fast and the range too...

Shout out to J Goodyear, South Austin... Holla...

Yep it's pretty amazing the sounds you can get from it

Jocphone has some nice points but the LFOs modulate and you can set the time from real slowwww to stupid fast and the range too...

The point about LFOs is a minor nice to have. Saying that having an independent LFO on each setting enables a huge amount of variation to the sound over time. And yeah, the range of the LFOs is quite insane.

  • But you can easily set slowww very small variations to each parameter to make it all Shoegaze or Disintegration Loops like...

Two loops of the same thing slightly altered into Sparkle is the next gen Dronegaze...

I'm getting a lot of (unintended) garbled, scratchy audio ion ios 7/iPad 4 every time I adjust a slider or control parameter. It's not coming through on my final audio recording using AB though. It's annoying. The app is only 20 meg or so but judging by the amount of battery being used I think it's very resource-dependent.

  • Here is a sample of this guy playing acoustic loops at a bar... I captured it and went through the basic settings, not meant to be musical but just to show some Scope of the Scape...

  • @Cassetteur Must presume you are in ATX also, no? Although you are hitting my buttons with a lobster pic also. Very fond of (eating) them, when in Maine. Where in 04 did you record that? Need some blues wailing (or similar) over that....

  • I'll 2nd the request for scene saving. Really like this app. Happy the same masking options in Soundscaper are present here.

  • the dev is super responsive please let him know about any issues

  • Already an update out. I also wish for scene saving.

@jocphone You know if you double-tap on the waveform, you can adjust by smaller increment?

  • edited October 2015

Oh how I wish there would be iOS-Filepicker/iCloud Drive support in all his apps.

And well, trimming the file would also be a welcome addition :)
