  • In gadget you could morph between different synths by automating volumes :)

I personnally gave up on cubasis, the piano roll is too slow compared to gadget ( I have high hopes with auria pro piano roll )

Midi is much more flexible in cubasis, but also more of a headache, gadget is too limited but at least it's "plug n play"

I always try to like it, because of audiotracks, micrologue and the sampler ( sounds like a very nice all in one solution ) but that piano roll and midi that is always complicated to setup puts me off every time

    my humble opinion

    This

Cubasis is at its loveliest as all-in-one for me when it's just micrologue and my imported kits. I use it the way some use Gadget and tend to ignore features that make it different than Gadget (AB and IAA host, audio in) unless they're super slick (one synth at a time if I do actually go outside the Cubasis stuff with IAA or AB).

  • Be interesting to see where the discussion goes when Auria Pro hits. I'm not a synth guy, barely a noob a midi. But I wonder how much can be dropped once AP hits the street. Though, once you get into a certain workflow, and know how to get things done, I guess it's hard to change.

Note - 3 out of 3 guessed right.. Actually I didn't guess, I could hear the movement of the morphing timbres in the real ani sound..

Actually only 3 out of 5 guessed it exactly right :).

But I'm happy to agree that Animoog sounds different/better. I'm just thinking that if I can get something a bit like that sound in Gadget then I could enhance it a bit in Auria with Saturn and Volcano. And the huge workflow advantages of working inside Gadget when composing might make this a better option.

Dunno though. I love Animoog. And I love the random patch button. I made that Animoog patch you hear by hitting random and tweaking.

I hear you. Perhaps not quite there myself. Would be a fun/instructive video for the rest of us 'what I learned after I got out of the comfy chair etc'.

Can't claim to have learned anything concrete yet or even in the near future. But I am becoming more aware that the nice, clean sounds in tools like Gadget and the other popular synths have a lot more going on than merely rigging together the basic synth components, oscillators, filters, envelopes etc.. They must be doing a lot of 'magic' processing to make their synths sound the way they do. I'm kinda curious about what that 'magic' is.

My stuffs probably a bit too 'fluid' to add much to the discussion - I generally record in live to Auria via whatever takes my fancy, and jam over the too. When I feel the need for a bit more structure though I will designate 'blocks' in Auria, Gadget rhythms for example, repeat and use to build a track. Not very often though. Probably never.

Gadget's stict imposition of structure was partly why I fell out of love with it. I know there are ways to blur that loop based music and I could always add more freeform noodlings over the top, but I wanted to be able to add things ad-hoc. Not quite as freeform as your own work but still having some freedom to allow things to flow as I want.

Saying that, having found a tool that allows me to place things anywhere on the timeline and with any kind of cross tempo madness should I want that, I am finding that it is my own thinking and ingrained habits that are caging me in now.

Gadget's one of those apps that I keep thinking 'I must use', but never do. Silly because I really like the sounds it makes, but when I get the iPad out for some track making I always overlook it - probably for the reason you mentioned.

Saying that I'm finishing off a track over the next few days for the SOTM thing, and it suffers from the foundations being a bit too freeform. I think maybe I need to work out a decent structure for the next one, so maybe Gadget will get some use.

Must remember to wave as you pass in the opposite direction ;)

Ah don't worry it's not permanent! Just want to do something a bit different for SOTM :) If anything my day to day stuff is going to get even more freeform - especially now I've got my mitts on Fieldscaper.

  • I have an Auria question. Is it possible to internally record one track (effected with an IAA effect app) to another track in Auria.

For example I want to play my whole synth track (track 1) through through in Auria and get busy throwing some grit on it with Caramel, tweaking Caramel live, and have the result recorded to track 2 in Auria. And if so, what's the latency like?

Ps don't make me go into the matrix! I'm very scared of the matrix!

I'm not aware of a way to do this, but you could export track 1 to Audioshare and record it back in that way. Be interested to know if it can be done though, would be a good workaround for the lack of pad automation.

I think the only way to do it with live tweaking of paramaters is via Audiobus.

First thing to do is to route the track you want to affect into a subgroup.

Then quit every app on the iPad, launch Audiobus, then launch Auria as an input, making sure to use the "i" button to select only the subgroup your track is routed through, add your FX in the middle slot, then add Auria as the ouput. Auria will automatically put itself into Audiobus mode and create a new track, record-enabled, named "Caramel" (or whatever is being fed in via Audiobus)

At this point you can press play and record your performance.

As for the Input Matrix I really don't understand why anyone is scared of it, it's just a really basic patch bay, with the rows being tracks and the columns being inputs. Just make sure your track is being fed the correct input, there's nothing more to it.

  • Actually come to think of it it might be possible to do it with IAA as well, but I've never actually tried it.

What you would do is to long press on the record enable button on your track/channel, and select the "record effects" option from the menu.

Then simply record the performance of your IAA effect. All the effects on that channel will then be baked into the track. I would have to test it to see what the potential pitflalls are, but it should work in theory. If you have any effects on that channel you want to keep live, just disable them prior to recording.

OK I just tested the IAA route, no dice. Basically it's not possible because you overwrite the audio on the track with the mic input, and I can't find any way to override that.

The Audiobus method definitely works though, I've used it several times.

    Thanks Richard...

So, using the AB method, why do you need to route the audio in your original track to a group?

Can't you just, in AB, choose Auria track 1 as the input and Auria as the output? (Or am I getting cobfused with MTD).

In MTD it's very nice by the way - you can make a given track the source of another track and just use IAA... it's very quick and easy... Shame the matrix doesn't allow you to do this...

  • With Auria you can only use Subgroups as AudioBus inputs AFAIK.

As for routing one track into another with IAA effects I'm hoping Auria Pro, which should have much more advanced routing according to the announcement earlier in the year, should hopefully be able to do it.

  • Cool. Thanks Richard. Appreciate your advice as always.

I'm gonna try to AB route tonight.

  • In my stupidity I am still stunned you can't seem to simply 'duplicate track' in Auria....

Surprised me when I found out there was no such action in Cubasis either. But I think you can copy and paste a block of audio into a new track. Is this possible in Auria? Then you could record the parameter tweaking of Caramel over this second track?

  • Yep that's possible. You can duplicate tracks like this as much as you like.

But the issue is where do do you record the tweaking of Caramel to - Auria doesn't seem to let you record it anywhere (either to a new track or baked into the track itself).

Unless you route out into AB and then back in again.

  • @Jocphone yes, you can copy bit by bit or mix down a track of course and re-import etc., but it just seems inelegant that you just can't copy a whole track, effects and all....pity.

Agreed, it seems one of the most basic features you might need

Again I'm not an Auria user but can't you record the automation then freeze the track and/or export it and reimport?

  • In Auria you can do a mixdown with a solo track that is automatically re-imported as a new track, which is OK, but you can't simply duplicate a track with the all the insert effects etc...

I've found an unsatisfactory way of doing the IAA tweaking thing: create a new track and in the Input Matrix assign the master L/R channel as the input. You can then solo your track that has an IAA effect and record that onto your freshly created new track, but you will only hear to solo track and not the entire mix. So the AB route is still much better.

Unfortunately only the native, Sugarbytes, and FabFilter FX support automation via Auria itself.

Thanks... I just tried at lunch time and couldn't get the IAA route to work... Very annoying... Because it's a bit of a pain to have to mess around going through audiobus (which insists on loading apps in a certain order etc...)

The 'record effects' button thing should really work... but as you say, it brings in the mic for some reason... I'm thinking that maybe I go into iOS settings and disallow Auria permission to use my mic... That might work.

  • @Matt_Fletcher_2000 said:

I don't think it will, because you still need to define the input of the track as being itself, and so far I can't find a way to do this.

Ah, right... that makes sense. When it was recording the mic it was glitching (using Glitch1 as an IAA) the mic input of cafe noise which was kind of cool. But probably the audio region on the track wasn't being pushed through.

There's gotta be a way though, surely... with all that input output patching. What do the numbers 2-24 refer to? Are they not tracks you can route into other tracks?

  • @Matt_Fletcher_2000 said:

^ this - has been the main barrier for me to getting ideas down when they arise since moving to Auria. Sometimes it just doesn't work - no audio at all - and I'll then have to reboot everything, forgetting what I was going to record and running out of time to do it. I'm more used to it now, but every now and again it'll throw a wobbly even when you do things in the right order - I lost all audio (everything) twice over the last week when recording Thumbjam and iVCS3. The rest of the time they worked fine.

It's that random, unreliability that stops me from loving this app. Hopefully V2 will stop it rubber chickening about.

The numbers correspond to inputs on an external interface. Unfortunately I simply don't think there is a way to live route one track into another without using AB. The AB option is actually fairly easy and quick to set up though, and it's what I've always used in the past - I never even considered trying to do this via IAA until today.
