message from Rim Buntinas, creator of Auria, about the upgrade price

just saw this in my mailbox:

"Hi everyone,

It’s been almost three weeks since the launch of Auria Pro, and we’ve had a tremendous response! Auria Pro was an enormous undertaking to say the least. As the sole developer, I’ve spent nearly 10,000 hours writing it over a period of three years, so to finally launch was an amazing experience for me personally.

Some of my most loyal customers have expressed disappointment with the upgrade price, and I wanted to take some time to explain my reasoning for the pricing. Auria Pro is an entirely new product with over 50 new features, including MIDI support, real-time audio warping, two powerful synthesizers and a built-in EXS/SFZ sample player. It took me longer to write than the original Auria. Even so, I felt like giving my existing customers a break on this new product and decided a 20% discount was fair, especially since so many powerful new features were added.

Some of you have expressed opinions that since you bought the original Auria two years ago and paid $50, paying an additional $39 for the upgrade to Pro seemed like too much. In response to that, I’d like to point out that you’ve gotten to use Auria for two years. I hope you’ve felt like those two years have provided value for the money you originally spent. Auria Pro is a new product. And while it may have the same retail price as the original one, it’s an entirely new product with a lot more features than the original. I invested a lot of time, energy and love into Auria Pro, and I feel it’s fair to be compensated for my efforts.

There also may have been some confusion over the difference between an upgrade and an update. The same day I released Auria Pro, I also released a free update to all existing Auria users. This update took advantage of all the improvements in performance that went into Auria Pro. Over 100 bugs were fixed in this free update and the performance increases were substantial. For example, in many cases projects now use 20% less CPU than the previous version. This update is free of charge to all Auria users, and shouldn’t be confused with the paid upgrade to Auria Pro, which is an entirely new product.

As the owner of a small company, it’s very important that I feel all my customers are treated fairly. I want everyone to feel like they paid a fair price for what they got. So as a gesture of good will, I’ve decided to release a comprehensive library of MIDI drum loops free of charge to all original Auria customers who’ve upgraded to Pro. This library, from Drummer/Producer/Sound designer John Emrich contains over 200 MIDI groove files in 54 styles, and is now a free download in the Auria Store to all Auria and Auria LE users who have upgraded to Pro. Those who haven’t upgraded will also be able to purchase this library at a later date.

Thanks again for all your support and Happy Holidays!

  • Amazingly generous! Thanks for the heads-up @synthandson and thank YOU @WaveMachineLabs :)

As a longtime Cubasis user I am slowly getting to grips with Auria Pro.

  • When I heard people complaining about the upgrade price for Auria Pro I could only shake my head. If you're making money with Auria and you can't cover $39 then you're in the wrong business. If it's a hobby, then don't upgrade if it's too much for you. Nobody is twisting your arm to buy it. Have some respect for the dev and all of his hard work. I'm sure you'd expect to be paid for your time and efforts.

  • Wow. He must have taken a rare day off - Rim's notoriously a man of few words. Polite and gifted, but usually keeps his posts short and sweet. Generous offer

  • A nice, tactful, FU to those who complained and didn't upgrade. :D

  • Polite is rare lol. But understandingly why. Poor fella under a heck load of stress coding. Hence the best DAW on iOS. He's earned every penny. Respect to him.

  • @anickt +++ I didnˋt understand those reactions either. As a first hour Auria user Iˋve done a couple of live-
productions with Auria1.I never had serious problems! So now with Auria Pro I can do all my work on an iPadPro
and finish everything in my "settled" studio. But even that might change with time because AuriaPro is a complete
recording environment, worth much more than I paid for.And the support by Rim is ALWAYS outstanding!!!
    Thanks for your great product.

  • Welcome gesture. I don't know the man, but I would be very surprised if he considered it a fuck you. In fact I'm sure he's keen to avoid further bruhaha of any kind and is just trying to keep the process going forward. Moving on....

I'm sure I'm just reading into it. :)

  • If I was having my arm twisted to buy it, they'd have to twist a bit harder.. $90 for Auria and Pro. Am I right in thinking you have to have Auria before you can buy Auria Pro ? It's just, I was considering Auria Pro until I saw that.. I'm no professional iPad musician/producer, of which I suspect there are few. But for the money (ooh $90 worth of apps) I would want to get the most out of it and not be restricted by my hardware.

  • Rim, you're a legend man! We appreciate all your hard work and incredible recording DAW. Thanks for you honesty and humility. Wishing you and everyone here a Happy and prosperous new year!

  • @RUncELL: no you don't have to have Auria before you can buy Auria Pro. They're 2 separate apps.

  • Many beta testers passed on Rim's offer for a free code. Just saying. The man does not sleep.

  • Thanks @synthandson . That's helped sway things a little.

I like to buy apps (no....), but for some of us this represents the station at the end of the tracks rather than a carriage or two on any particular train...

  • Classy, very classy!

I intend to update, but I was one of the ones who misunderstood the pricing too. I do not begrudge Rim his just dues one bit - he has worked hard and deserves compensation. The misunderstanding did occur however, whatever the cause, and being rectified and clarified helps greatly. Auria is a GREAT product - Auria Pro even more so. I fully support it.

+1 I was under the same impression, queried the upgrade price but suffered some upsetting, vicious comments in response - from which I doubt I'll ever recover.

I had a choice of this or Cubasis when I purchased the original earlier this year, and bought Auria because I'd heard the upgrade price was more generous than I thought - not just me, lots of others thought the same but I was one of the first to query it on here. It turned out this was not the official line and this was clarified when the Pro version arrived.

Moving on, and now owning a copy I can say it's absolutely worth the upgrade cost - it's the best iOS DAW out there, but that was never in doubt for me.

Rim is obviously one of the most dedicated, hardworking devs out there and I and anyone else using Auria Pro fully appreciate his efforts. A five star app if ever there was one.

:) I like to buy apps, yes indeed.. Useful apps I must add.. not implying that Auria pro isn't useful, I like its traditional looks as a mixing environment more so than Cubasis' clinical approach. But Cubasis is capable of mixing, it has a great EQ, compressor not too bad, reverb, delay, filter, distortion etc, and not bad synth and sampler to boot. So I really need to look deeper into Auria Pro and weigh up the cost to extra function ratio.. keygrouping and velocity switching being somethings I crave on ios samplers for example.

In the meantime I'll be getting the mighty Cyclop.. That should kill off the gear lust for now. Merry Christmas @JohnnyGoodyear sir, and to you all.

  • A nice gesture - respect to Rim for this, and even bigger respect for making a program as awesome as Auria Pro. For what you are getting, $50 is still a great deal.

It's been my experience that on the internet it can be easy to get off track about who said what and when. I think many people had the impression about the upgrade price which ultimately never originated from Rim and he's probably gotten as much grief if not more over the whole misunderstanding than anybody. The good news is that if Auria wasn't valued by so many people, nobody around here would be too concerned about how much it would cost to upgrade as there would be no desire to do so.

I must confess that I never used Auria very much for various reasons some having to do with the capitol investment in terms of time needed to use the app effectively and the general perception that there wasn't a real need to refine my music as it wasn't of sufficient quality to be worth refining further (GIGO). Nevertheless I broke down and upgraded just in case my production quality improves at some future time, I'll have access to a DAW on my platform of choice that will enable me to refine it.

@synthandson I hope the grief caused by these sorts of misunderstandings is outweighed by the sense of accomplishment Rim gets by creating Auria and meeting the critical workflow needs of so many people here and thank him for his hard work, consideration, and the MIDI drum loops. (edited to sort out confusion between message from Rim versus a message to Rim)

It IS a mighty thing, that Cyclop. Too clever for me (or perhaps my fingers are simply far and away too fat), but capable of terrific noises and things. Merry Christmas to you Sir also and to all who sail in you etc.

  • Stand up guy, company, app, and move. Thanks @Rim!

  • I think it's total horse shit.

...that Rim had to even think about offering this, let alone go through with it. He's far classier than I am. I reread the email he sent and inserted 'Fucking brats.' after every sentence. Suddenly, it was the best email ever.

  • ^ an interesting point of view...yet very valid. Rim doesn't owe the naysayers anything. I love the insert you imagined...that nails it, but I doubt that was the process...I just think he's above that.

    I'm shedding realistic tears here.

Knowing that the extra $14 Rim so violently demanded above the $25 you imagined was ripped from the bellies of your beleaguered and suffering children, since of course no force in the universe was capable of preventing "Monzo the Great" from pressing the upgrade button, and thus dooming his children to eternal starvation.

It's obvious the release of Auria Pro was one of the greatest tragedies to ever have beset humanity!

I can cosmically feel their tiny hunger pains right now...

    The horror! The horror!
