@synthandson I guess your bringing the issue to our attention here sort of led me to addressing Rim via proxy. I should go visit his site at some point and thank him directly rather than merely voicing support for him here in such an indirect way.
Looks like we are down one Monzo. A total shame. And completely avoidable.
I think, at this point, that this entire issue has been beaten to death. Some folks are happy, some are unhappy. But I can't see how arguing about it, or even having started this thread, is helping in the least and actually seems to have done nothing but pour gasoline onto the fire.
I'm totally into Auria Pro, and what Rim has done. Super glad I was on the beta. I'm having a fantastic time, with a fantastic piece of software. But I would really suggest that it's time to walk away from the discussion. People will make decisions based on need and money, people will make lots of music, people will share opinions on how it compares to Gadget and Cubasis. But let the vitriol die. I'm feeling for Rim, who just killed himself for three years to get this out the door, and has now seen about 10 times the number of posts arguing about the price, over the included features and what can be done with them.
+1
Ignore the trolls.
@rickwaugh: I did not intend to pour gasoline into any fire - I just wanted to share Mr. Buntinas' mail for those that didn't subscribe to his newsletter. Yes it really was/ is sad that so much of the Auria Pro discussion is about the price but this is its developer's point of view on the matter and that's why I wanted to post it.
And yeah it's sad that monzo has left the forum now.
@synthandson, totally understood, that that was not at all the intention. I'm also a huge fan of Rim and what he's done. It may be that Rim wanted it published here, I don't know. But aside from providing the information, it's certainly provided a forum for more argument. Which I don't believe to be terribly helpful. Opinions are about as clear as they can be at this point in time.
As much as I appreciate the cheap prices on iOS, I think developers should charge a lot more for their efforts. Not so simple, I know; we sell music for peanuts too.
My two cents -
I've long held this thought - there really is no reason financially for anyone to build a "pro audio" app on iOS. The expected market sell price, factoring in the (as yet unpaid) hours, and the inevitable hours of customer support and revisions and response, make no sense as an endeavor any sensible coder would engage upon.
And yet there are so many uber talented folks creating code - Rim, Micheal, Sebastion and many others - that have to be getting returns that most of us would consider shite for a week at work - let alone working for months or years waiting for the first check.
I see these folks as musicians - so tied to a desire to create and share their vision. Nothing but love could keep these people going, just as the love of creating music drives so many here. iOS has such limitations, it was never designed for pro music, yet these coders have done everything they can to to end run those limitations - because it's just such a damn cool interface. Without doubt, we are blessed by people that can back up "what if" with "how's this".
I often see the "cup of coffee" metaphor regarding pricing. As I believe Apple's goal with the iPad was a media consumption device - I think a more accurate metaphor is renting, streaming or buying a movie. We can rent the latest Tom Cruise for the cost of Patterning, or buy the Star Wars canon for the price of Auria. Or an album of music for that matter - what's that cost?
Those of us in capitalist nations expect so much from every dollar we spend with a "corporation". And one of the (very) few criticisms I have of this community is bickering over cost. I see the iOS coders as creators, as any musician/producer/writer is, and as in listening to music, seek to find what it is is they think is cool. In Rim's case, the vision is exceptional - and paying for one hour out of 10000, for all the pleasure it gives, beats most anything I could buy for the same price. It really is a work of art - as are so many of the apps we love.
So a big thank you to those who have given so much.
And a wish of joy to all the wonderful folks here.
@wigglelights I think your two cents is worth a lot more than two cents.
I second this emotion, there's love behind all of it, all the coders, musicians, coder/musicians, that show up here at what is usually an oasis for a little sip of that pure thing. It's mindblowing really, something one sees on the desktop side as well, 100s of developers that create marvels and release them literally for free, and here for might-as-well-be-free, why else but out of love?
^ I'm with them.
I don't know how to express how awesome I think this sentence/insight/notion is.
Plus plus Mister @wigglelights, on point and well put. I particularly like using the comparative analogy of other media (rather than coffee) consumption.
Selfishly, I will miss @monzo, he's a good man, but it's supposed to be fun and if it isn't then you shouldn't.
@monzo
Happy fekkin' christmas feller !
Missing @monzo too. Happy Christmas in Wales, mate...
(Not trying to get involved - I can see all sides - but I smiled when someone talked about a way to make apps more expensive in England)
