  • Thank you @SecretBaseDesign ! I really appreciate having this app. Totally helpful and such a great idea. Now that I get it... :)

  • I'm wondering if other devs are looking at this. The slide over mode seems like it could open a lot of doors...AB Remote, sequencers, effects, etc.

I agree. Even without a qwerty keyboard or Bluetooth controller, the app is handy just for the extra pads that slide out. So much potential here.

  • Glad people are digging it -- I hadn't really thought about slide-over until the discussions in the other thread happened -- and now, it seems obvious that it's very useful. I'm grinding on the UI in Infinite Looper to make sure that it'll be functional in slide-over form.

And not to nag -- but some reviews in the app store would be much appreciated! I'm going to bump the price up to a buck on Thursday, and I'll need all the help I can get in convincing users that it's a worthwhile investment!

  • Crap man, ya.......I downloaded it, and forgot to leave a review. I'm gonna get on that! Midimorhp is one of my favs. It works so good for what I do with it. I tried midi guitar, but, it doesn't work as well for me.

Patrick, you make some kick butt stuff! And, SBD is one of the coolest company names ever! ;)

  • Done @SecretBaseDesign. Five stars and a review. Very deserving of all the praise.

  • Thanks @SecretBaseDesign. Sadly still on 8 so I can't give it a go but grabbed it anyway. :)

Absolutely! I would love to have a good player with smb support and slide over/split screen. I'm hopeful that nplayer will have the slide over support eventually.

  • Left a glowing review today. Thanks for the reminder.

  • Hails! This is ace, and look forward to trying it. So cool that this company listens and converses with us!

  • i just want to thank for this really neat and helpful app. It's great that you can setup chords as well.

  • It was exactly what I was looking for in the past. I have loads of midi controllers but they are mostly for chord progression, arps and whatsoever, anyway notes but what happened was that I was looking for a simple CC rider to record automation in Auria and almost bought Lemur(which I will buy sometime in the future) but IMO it has some extra feature I don't need right now for that specific task. And then today I stumbled upon Sidecar which has some extra feature that I didn't know I needed. Thanx SBD for this simple but super useful controller!!!

  • Thanks for the feedback! Some things that should happen in the next update (maybe a few weeks out, if I can get my act together):
    1) Background mode, so that it can transfer MIDI when not on-screen. I put in a "midi relay" function, and am finding that easily redirecting MIDI traffic is super-useful for my work flow.
    2) And with background audio, I might as well add Audiobus. This will open up the pads, and everything else, to Audiobus Remote.
    3) Support for iPhone, and iOS 7 and above. If it's handy in the background, it doesn't need to be in slide-over/split-screen, which means it doesn't have to be iOS 9 only.

And there's some MIDI learn craziness that might happen. But I really need to focus on Infinite Looper, and get that out the door!

  • Dunno if it makes any sense but someone could find it useful: midi macroing.
Basically some kind of "chord" where, instead of of sending multiple notes messages, it sends multiple CCs on the same virtual controller. For example: route the first controller to send at the same time a CC to a synth filter and a scaled and reversed CC to its resonance.

Enthusiastic YES to points #2 and 3 on your list!

  • So unless i want to use this app with split screen or slide over i could get stompwatch instead?. What are the differences beetween the two?.

  • Sidecar is essentially Stompwatch, with the user interface shifted around, and without all the watch features. If you can wait a bit for background and AB, Sidecar is probably the better long-term app purchase. Stompwatch doesn't have the Bluetooth keyboard support, but it will probably get added shortly.

So far, I think both of the people using Stompwatch like it, but I don't know if I'll get a third sale or not. (Ok, it's not quite that bad, but it seems like having watch support is actually reducing sales -- people focus on that part of the functionality, and then dismiss the app entirely because they don't own an Apple Watch.)

  • lol, I had to re-read the "both people" part.

  • Sidecar 1.1 should be updating now.

Version 1.1 adds background audio -- so if you use the MIDI relay functionality, it will keep doing it's thing, even in the background. I use this is to be able to switch a MIDI controller from one synth to another, quickly and easily. Set your controller/MIDI app to send MIDI notes to Sidecar, and then toggle between any of the ten destinations, to change where the MIDI eventually winds up.

I've also added support for iOS 8, for those of you who are late adopters. iOS 8 does not have side-by-side or slide-over, but you can still use the relay function for MIDI (and Sidecar is turning out to be a very useful MIDI controller, even if you only use it full-screen). If you've got a second iPad -- you can obviously pair it up with Apollo MIDI over Bluetooth (which is still free, but I'm thinking about changing that -- potential new features to be added....).

I wasn't able to put AB support into Sidecar -- AB policy is to not allow MIDI controllers access to the bus. Bummer, but that's the way it is.

And I had a few ideas of things to do with Sidecar in the future. The 1.2 update will be pretty cool (that will happen after I get Infinite Looper done, though!).

Also -- on Monday, Apollo Motion MIDI Controller will release -- designed for the iPhone, it uses the accelerometer to trigger MIDI notes, so you can tap or shake your iPhone. I find that I can get more natural feeling bass line rhythms and drum hits when I'm moving with the music (tapping on glass just doesn't get the groove for me). I'll have intro pricing on Apollo MMC for a few days.

And a week or two later, there will be one more thing dropping that I don't think anyone expects. This is something that I'm doing with my musicIO partners -- when I initially pitched the idea, they thought I was nuts, but they're on board now. There have been a lot of projects on the back burner, and they're all coming together, more-or-less at the same time.

  • And here's some codes, in case you missed it when it was free. There are some more codes on FB, and our Twitter feed, but it looks like they're getting redeemed quickly. I'll probably post some more on Monday, when Apollo Motion releases.

  • Looking forward to your next ventures @SecretBaseDesign. I'm loving Sidecar! Any thoughts on a minimal audio engine to allow AB integration?

  • Ay, looking forward to the new stuff and thanks for the Sidecar update. Sidecar is an indispensable part of my setup--I use it happily every day!

    Taken this one. Thanks, Patrick!

The new version does have a minimal audio engine -- it could splice into Audiobus, but because it's not an audio-centric app, I don't have permission from the AB team (and I need them to generate a crypto key to allow access -- can't do that on my own).

  • Thanks for the clarification Patrick.

  • I've always wanted the ability to have MIDI apps as part of Audiobus as it makes it easier to control the app chains. Nevertheless, I can see how producing no sound could add more complication than the Audiobus developers would want to deal with.

  • @OtisFunkmeyer -- will do -- I'll set things up so that you can change octaves easily, and the shift will push things up an octave too. There are a couple of tweaks along those lines that are easy to do, and should happen shortly. Transposing a single step up and down, for example, if you want to play in a different key.

And there's actually a bigger thing that'll happen. I didn't upgrade to iOS 9 until I started working on Sidecar -- like everyone else, I try to hang back on OS versions that are working reliably. But the slide-over and side-by-side; I'm amazed at how useful it is, and I'll be migrating some code from my other apps into Sidecar for the next release.

Can't wait to see what's cooking!

I am now cogitating on how to make a ten switch foot pedal by modding a cheap Bluetooth keyboard!

For hacking a pedal board -- the easy route is pulling apart an iCade. Sidecar was built out of Stompwatch, so everything in the video works the same.
