And there's actually a bigger thing that'll happen. I didn't upgrade to iOS 9 until I started working on Sidecar -- like everyone else, I try to hang back on OS versions that are working reliably. But the slide-over and side-by-side; I'm amazed at how useful it is, and I'll be migrating some code from my other apps into Sidecar for the next release.

Can't wait to see what's cooking!

I am now cogitating on how to make a ten switch foot pedal by modding a cheap Bluetooth keyboard!

For hacking a pedal board -- the easy route is pulling apart an iCade. Sidecar was built out of Stompwatch, so everything in the video works the same.

Aha, very nice! How sturdy are those icade buttons? Would they hold up to foot stomping?

The buttons are rock-solid (and it would be easy to swap them out for other connectors if you want). They're designed for gamers doing hours of button mashing, much more abuse than you'd get if you're just switching patches or toggling effects on and off.

Thanks for the tip! I'm gonna get one...

Do you ever use the MIDI Designer app? For some reason I can't connect Sidecar and MIDI Designer--won't even transmit a simple CC. It's the only app I use that doesn't seamlessly connect with Sidecar...

BTW, got the icade and hacking has commenced; will post a photo when it's done. The configuration of the one I got differs from your documentation but easy enough to remap. Super happy with it so far. Thx!

  • Sidecar 1.2 is waiting for review. It's a little bit of an update. Adds IAA hosting, a mixer, file recorder, web server to transfer recordings to a desktop, and supports audio streaming over WiFi (to Apollo Sound Injector). Plus, some tweaks to the Bluetooth keyboard support. I've got a number of other things planned, but for the short term, I need to jump back onto Infinite Looper, and get that wrapped.

    Nice! Congrats.

  • Version 1.2 has just gone live. The iPhone variant is still waiting in review, should be available shortly.

    New stuff:
IAA hosting with a built in mixer
Stream audio over WiFi to Apollo Sound Injector (available for both iOS and Mac)
WiFi access to audio recordings using the built-in web server
More functionality in the Bluetooth keyboard mappings

  • Holy cow, this is a MONSTER update! @SecretBaseDesign has been busy... I love the IAA hosting/mixer and will use it all the time.

Quick question: what are the new little buttons for 0, +1, +2, etc for?

The 0, +1, +2 buttons are octave shift for the QWERTY keyboard -- so you can play in multiple octaves. Holding shift will shift one octave up!

Still need to add in some controls so that you can switch MIDI pages -- next update, the iCade joystick, and a couple of QWERTY keys, will let you do that. It was on the list of things-to-get-done, but just didn't happen for this iteration.

  • Very nice update! Is there a way to control the pads by MIDI controller instead of BT?

MIDI Learn will happen in the next update -- you'll be able to trigger a pad from incoming MIDI, and toggle the recorder too. That code is half-way done (it's part of Infinite Looper); with luck, fully cooked in a month or two.

  • Awesome update. Gotta test audio over wifi!

    Yay! That's awesome!
So then I could use a MIDI pedal to trigger chords and send them to different destinations even with sidecar in the background? I would be very interested in beta testing the next version if you'd like. I think I may have several suggestions to contribute to your further development.
Sidecar with MIDI learn could become a very convenient way to have all kinds of different presets for MIDI pedals without having to reconfigure in an editor app or even switching modes on the pedal itself. For that it would be good to have another mode where you can see more than 10 pads to make full use of the pedal (13 keys for KMI 12 step).

  • Darn. Really gotta upgrade my OS

Precisely -- I wrote an FCB1010 programmer, but even with that, it's still a pain in the butt to get the pedals to do what you want (and I'm getting requests to customize it for the the UnO chipset -- but the effort is just not worth it).

The plan instead is to make Sidecar smarter -- so that whatever hardware pedal you've got (or keyboard, or whatever), you can configure it to trigger the pads. It gets me out of writing custom code for every pedal that's out there.

The MIDI learn will support triggering any set of pads on any set of pages -- so you press down on foot pedal X, it generates some sort of MIDI event, and then that event might trigger pad 1 on page 3, pad 4 on page 7, and so on.... Make it as complex as you like. And there will be support for MIDI start/stop messages, toggling the recorder, and so on.

If you've got things you'd like to see -- drop me a line here, by email, whatever....

  • And there will be support for MIDI start/stop messages, toggling the recorder, and so on.

Whoa, so MIDI controls for the IAA mixer too?

  • I'm getting very excited about that next version! I will be able to set up pages for different controls for loopy per app going into it etc... And if we could map a pedal to go to the next/previous page, maybe even short press = up, long press = down that would be the ultimate.

  • At the moment this is also possible with Midiflow of course. But I think it'll be great to have this stuff very accessible and hot switchable immediately on the side bar. Looking forward to this!

Having lots of useful stuff in the sidebar is a revelation. Kudos to Patrick for jumping on these opportunities with this app.

  • The iPhone version of Sidecar is out now -- and available for a buck for a few days.
    https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/sidecar-mini/id1088629207?mt=8

No slide-over, obviously, but it has all the MIDI controller stuff, an IAA host and mixer (4 inserted apps), a built-in recorder, and it can stream audio over WiFi to Apollo Sound Injector. And it does all the Bluetooth keyboard stuff.

I've got MIDI learn code coming together -- with luck, an update for both Sidecars will be out in a couple of months.

  • Cool beans

  • Hi, I feel pretty dumb. I can't get icade and this app to work. Looks so easy, selecting icade and all but no dice.
    IOS 8. Any help? thanks

  • Should I buy iPhone version too? Would that help simplify at all?

  • I mapped cc to icade I think. But then even my normally easy nonstick pedal on-off isn't working. Then I tried it as pc... help arghhh haha

Is the red light on on the iCade? Meaning: did it pair with the iPad?

If so, then make sure you have the MIDI config set correctly and then the CCs set correctly.

  • You need to pair the iCade to the phone -- it's essentially a keyboard. If you open up Safari, and tap in the URL entering spot -- tapping buttons on the iCade should generate keystrokes. If it's not... then ya gotta get the pairing sorted out!

You might need to tell the iPad to forget about the iCade (in the Bluetooth keyboard settings) -- otherwise, it might pair automatically, and will not switch the pairing to the phone.

  • Oh so I should rock both iPhone and iPad? Thanks

  • And yea it pairs up
