Auria Pro Wishlist
Topic for discussing features we would like to see in Auria Pro sooner rather than later.
My wishlist is about some features I find crucial to my workflow:
1 - global built-in keyboard. Preferentially with positional velocity sensibility, as with Lyra's, and the ability of taking the lower half of the screen, keeping the upper half for either the instrument parameters (garageband style keyboard view), tracks, mix or midi editing views;
2 - Lyra drum pads with positional velocity sensibility, as already implemented for Lyra's keyboard.
3 - Ironing of the grid bug, that impairs playhead control when the grid is set to e.g. triplets.
4 - the ability of previewing files before importing. With MIDI files, this would play an instrument set in the settings page, or the one in the currently selected MIDI track.
Comments
Definitely a better keyboard, and a chord pad would be nice as well. After that Link and AU would be my requests.
A global keyboard, even using the current layout, would already be a huge step forward. Chord pad, nice idea.
P.S.: the number 4 of my list is currently my strongest wish, lol.
-Play left/right channel, down mix to mono tracks
-Arm rec for just monitoring purposes without having to record audio when recording , let's say, midi
-+1 for internal midi keyboar but not a huge fan of the other midi facilities mentioned above, for now
-+1 for bug fixes of any genre, specially the grid ones
_Ableton link
_I would like to have AB remote triggers for mute/solo but I think it will be hard to implement without having fixed number of tracks
_lots of other which I can't remember right now
I could give a fig for internal keyboards and pads. I have not found it very easy to play anything on the iPad screen, (except for GeoShred. Thumbjam is decent.) I actually don't know that I want much of anything, except for increased stability, and bugs gone. Still can't enter track names with my Bluetooth keyboard. And I want track notes, so I can track insert preset names.
Internal keyboard and cycle/loop recording. How did they leave that out?
Good points!
@rickwaugh, I didin't get the point of track notes: can't you just save a given set of insert presets and settings as a channel strip preset, so enabling you the recall these if any tweaking attempt messes with everything?
@theconnactic, the problem is that the preset names disappear. So if I change them I don't know what they were, or if I want to replicate it elsewhere.
I think, (If I understand your desire for loop recording correctly @LeeB) that the design of Auria Pro is more akin to, say, Pro Tools than Live. For something like Live, Gadget is a great loop / scene based recorder.
However, using looping with record and autopunch, you can achieve something like a multi-take record in the looped section already in Auria Pro (for both MIDI and audio). To do that, record with auto punch on in the looped section, then simply long-hold and move the recorded clip to the position you would like, or another track. Works very nicely.
@MusicInclusive - loop recording is used to loop one segment, say a guitar solo section, and to perform the solo over and over again without stopping. Then by using the layered takes to comp together a suitable complete solo. This is much better than punching in and allows the player/singer to quickly do several takes.
Sure, but, you can achieve something of it with the method above. I fully understand multiple takes and layers in desktop DAWs @MrNezumi - and that kind of feature has been requested for some time in the Auria forums, but I was seeking to understand exactly what the original request for looping was looking for Always good to have clarity, that way Rim can work on actual need rather than perceived need
I was one of the early requesters of layered loop recording at the Auria forum. I bought Auria long before midi was mentioned. The punch-in workaround just isn't the same and doesn't lend itself to comping as well. As for why it was left out ( @LeeB ), one word: MIDI.
I'll second the wish for AU (I know the developer has already said it's coming, but I'm super excited for this)!
That's why I save my plugin settings in at least two instances: the entire chanel strip saving field, the individual insert saving field and, if possible, inside the plugin preset list itself.
E.g.: for my latest SOTM entry "Casual", I used OverloudTHM, ProC2 and a plethora of channel strip settings for the rhythm guitar. I saved the channel strip as "Casual Rtm Gtr" - that would save not only the channel strip settings, but also all the inserts used with their current settings and presets. But I also opened each insert and saved the settings as "Casual Rtm Gtr". Finally, I save the settings into the plug-ins' preset lists themselves, since they allow for it, even if the given set was a preset, as "Casual Rtm Gtr".
That way, I can recall my settings for the rhythm guitar, individually or all of them, if I want to revert unwanted tweaking, or if I want to do a new track with the same settings, or even if I want this particular sound in a different song. Work for me every time, and I never get lost.
All the best!
I honestly hope Auria never leans to a Live-style workflow. Most songs recorded with Ableton Live I've been listening to these days seems to conform to what I named the "Ableton Song" sound: tunes that sound like an arbitrary collage of loops and feel more like DJ performances or remixes (@samu captured perfectly the mental picture in another post: firing a loop with one hand and raise the other hand). It's much like "Fruity Loops Song" phenomena, another name coined by me: Ableton Live seems IMO to share a bit of the Fruity Loops general songwriting philosophy, which I absolutely despise. I even decided to stay away from GB's new looping features until I figure out how to use it without making "Ableton Songs" or sounding like a blessed DJ.
To clarify on loop recording. I'm talking of the midi side. i.e I want to play keys over a 2 bar loop, which works in cycle mode, however when you hit record, it plays for 2 bars and runs on without looping. When midi recording in any other DAW I always have it on loop and layer it up until I'm happy. This is impossible in Auria at present and the reason i don't use it.
I've never come across a DAW that doesn't allow it.
I disagree a little bit: as of now, there is no loop libraries for Gadget (and hope Korg stay forever away of it), so Gadget tunes are real songs, exciting and never sound like "Ableton Songs" (or worse, "Fruity Loops Songs").
P.S.: I'm all for the sensible use of Audio/MIDI loops: I just dislike the way they are (over- or mis-) used inside Live or Fruity Loops.
@theconnactic @MusicInclusive I think you may have misconstrued my use of the word loop. I was referring to cycle recording.
As for me, I was talking about @MusicInclusive remarks: he just created the opportunity for a little well-deserved Live and Fuity Loops bashing.
In fact I agree with and think loop recording is a much needed addition.
Didn't even realize I could do that. I'll have to check it out. Thanks for that.
Still be nice to save some additional textual info with the song, some of my thought processes that went into it.
@theconnactic said:
Just to make it clear, about the third step (the one I described after saying "Finally..."): only OverloudTHM in this particular case allowed me to do this. Th FF filter plugins don't allow for new entries inside their preset lists themselves, so their settings must be saved using the second step.
Well, I'm glad we got that cleared up
Keyboard and piano roll able to be 'restricted to a key/scale' please (like Gadget).
That would be a cool addition, specially for when we don't have/want to use/cannot use a MIDI controller.
I wish the Master Meter pop up would stay on either Mixer or Editor mode like it did before the update. Please @WaveMachineLabs bring this back. Thanks!
Also, when "Importing File" you can't select the very last entry due to the "Import Position" banner at the bottom being in the way.
Sorry if this stuff has already been mentioned.
Well noted. This is a very annoying bug.
I am looking forward to trying the forthcoming improved automation editing but to be honest I am so into Modstep it would have to be pretty darned amazing to pull me away.
