Why is not possible to have touch sensitive pads with a touch screen?

Unless the device supports 3D Touch (currently only iPhone 6s or later), the screen isn't pressure sensitive like you might think it is. Earlier phones and all current iPads only sense that you touched the screen, not how hard. There are ways to try to emulate that by using the accelerometer, and (I think??) by sensing the radius of the finger imprint, but none are true indications of pressure and aren't very accurate.

  • For now they don't sync. As a workaround add one extra bar at the beginning of your song in DS tap the record button then the play button before the second bar. After the midi has recorded to AP shorten the event to line up with the first downbeat and drag The event back to bar one beat one.

This worked fine for Auria receiving midinotes from DS, but how did you sync the two apps?

There's more than one way, but they all require you to change stuff in Auria or Drum Session. I prefer to leave Auria set a certain way and change the settings in Drum Session.

First, add Drum Session as an instrument in Auria Pro. In the PORT panel, set Channel to All and select Drum Session as an input device.

    There's two scenarios:
    1. Recording MIDI from DS to Auria
    2. Playing MIDI in Auria and have it trigger DS.

  • Thanks @niallobrien. @twoifbysea just offered a workaround. Ideally, one would want to synchronize the two apps together such that midi or audio flows into Auria's timeline matching other content already recorded. Your nonetheless helpful explanation shows me how to transfer midi notes between the apps. I appreciate that, but I thought you'd also found a way to lock the timing between the apps. That's a better workflow for me.

  • The new piano roll editing looks great and all of the individual track output stuff is going to be huge, I mean it's a big reason Drum Perfect Pro is the go to app for a lot of us writing songs requiring traditional "rock/pop" acoustic drums vs. electronic drums.

But unless I missed it, i just went back about 5 pages, sample import to me is paramount for any drum machine/app/program. Personal taste in drum sounds are like opinions, which of course are like...well, everybody has got their own idea of what drum sounds they dig.

Having a dry kit is cool, but to me sample import and custom kit creation should be top of the list. All these other features like the better piano roll, timeline editing, etc won't come into play if someone doesn't use DrumSession because they can't use their own sounds.

I know you're going to have all of this stuff in there eventually, plus cool new features that other apps don't have, but that's just my 2 cents about what's vital right now. Like for me, I'll work around not getting the patterns exactly how I want, to the ghost note, and could deal with more of the "stock" grooves IF I could import the sounds I want and build up my own preset kits.

I'll take useful features like sample audition over some glitzy new UI overhaul. DS looks fine, how it sounds is much more important.

Be cool and thanks for all your hard work & dedication to the community, especially being so receptive to input...

  • Yeah sync start and stop is paramount to my workflow also.

I'll look into this...our samples are pretty solid...but I know there's going to be people who want their own in there. Once stem export is put into play...you could really start to tweak sounds in the kit and make some amazing sonic changes...still looking into sample import, though.

Yes, the possibility to build my own kits would be very useful indeed!

  • Even better and I do not know how hard this would be to implement but in Auria Pro there's a sync option called MTC I think this is where no matter where you are in the timeline, if you rewind or forward, stop or start, which ever is slave clock wise to Auria will follow the exact position of the song pointer. Don't know if this makes sense but this would be huge!!!!

I used to be able to do this with my old Tascam 688 Midi studio in the 90's!!!! Yikes!!! LOL!

Maybe contacting Rim @WaveMachineLabs might be able to clarify. Anyways thanks so much for taking the time to make this app even more awesome!!

  • Is there somewhere I can send a video?

@DerekBuddemeyer thank you for your diligent work!

I'm having a constant issue with Drum Session on my iPad Pro 12.9 where the transport buttons just stop responding after I play any pattern in the timeline and at any time press the Record button. The metronome begins to click and the the Play button changes to reveal the Stop button, but pressing it does nothing, all of the transport buttons stop responding. I'm left with no option but to force quit the app.

Can you give me a step by step on how this happens...then if we can recreate it...we can fix it

Thanks Derek. I love some of the kits in DS and also the fact the app isn't 2GB because of your sonic mojo, lol.

But I'm just saying from a basic, modern era VST/iOS app standpoint most drum machines have sample import. It does nothing to hurt the quality & usefulness of the included drumkits (or make people think "it's got sample import, the stock kits must suck").

To the contrary it will help the app be that much more professional & complete. Say you're recording a live drummer with Auria but his timing & playing isn't happening, but the mics recorded the drums really well.

You can use a drum transient replacement app like Drumagog or do hours of editing OR you can sample some of the drums from the Auria session, load them into Drum Session and create the parts in the editor or use some included grooves to get a tighter performance with the same sounds.

This is probably pretty convoluted but I'm trying to sell you on sample import anyway I can, lol...

  • @MusicMan4Christ said:
Don't care for it takes so much space. DS is light and awesome! But maybe the iPad screen might not be as strong for people to do beats on it.

What I meant was, if GarageBand can do this, it should be possible in other apps too :)

  • @Trentsongs ok...just watched your video and tried it out myself.
Looks like it only happens when you press record and then press the actual stop button or the rewind button . Once you do any of these things it seems to render any of the buttons useless and the track will continue to play regardless of what you do so what I found is if you hit the record button again wait for it to start recording and then hit the record button again to stop the recording then the buttons become responsive again . I am working on something now that will not enable the other buttons to be pushed while recording until the record button has been disengaged and hopefully that way it will keep this from happening . Until then this is an easy fix that everyone can use on their own until I have this in place without having to restart the app or shut down your iPad

    Steps to fix
Press record and let it start recording after the four count sounds off
Press the record button again to stop recording
Now all the buttons should be responsive again

This is a good idea and we will work on this but it won't be right away as we have so many other things were trying to get finished up right now but sample import is definitely going to be part of the program when we have time to implement it

Also you can record live drums into drum session or into your daughter of choice using Drum Session if you were to hook up an electric drum kit to your iPad and use Drum Session as the source of your sound or if you were to use an acoustic kit that had drum triggers you could also use it to record drum session in a live recording session theoretically ... not that this has anything to do with what you were saying but kind of a cool feature

  • Ah, apologies - yeah, it's just a case of printing the MIDI for now it seems.

  • God, it seems that we're all asking a lot of Drum Session, lol. For me personally, I think the groove editor could be improved, specifically with regards to velocity as this is what makes a drum beat sound realistic or not. At the moment it's cumbersome. That's the only thing on my wish list right now as I know MIDI export is on the way and if I want to use my own samples, I'll export the audio stems instead and slap Drumagog on the channels.

This may be so, but for a 'premium' price, I think it not excessive to expect start/stop sync with another app, import samples and adjust note velocity. From what I've read these are not currently available. Once added, then it becomes a viable alternative to DPP in my opinion.

  • You can adjust note velocity, it's just very cumbersome at the moment. Yes, I forgot to mention sync, I'd like that too.

Also,if what you really want are the features of app X (in this case DPP) then why not just use DDP? You could drop Drum Session's grooves into Auria and trigger DDP with your custom samples...just sayin'.

Okay, this is the most expensive drum app on iOS, so I think it should also offer a premium user experience. It's 29,99€ versus 18,99€ for DPP, which has a LOT to offer and has better sounds as well. People shouldn't have to buy both apps just for using user samples. I fully expect further improvements that will make the app live up to its aspirations and Derek sounds like he is willing to deliver that. And then it'll be very cool. Until then, it's not really worth the investment and does not surpass DPP IMHO...

I do :) But we haven't mentioned any of the DS features I'd like to use too! I usually don't call for many significant app functionality improvements, just feeding back where I would expect the app to be (functionally) for me to buy. Good feedback for the dev, I reckon.

  • DDP has better sounds (samples)?! Are you crazy and/or high? For context; I'm a drummer and on desktop I own lots of Toontrack products and Kontakt drum libraries (GetGood Drums being my new favourite). I've also recorded & played a variety of kits in different studios in Europe. I bought both DDP and DS - DS is miles ahead with it's included samples in my opinion. DDP's samples sound like something from one of my kid's toys. But of course, DDP has many more features, custom samples and multi-outs being killer in my opinion (you can print the MIDI or audio to individual tracks in Auria Pro).

Rock Drum Machine 4 doesn't sound bad either though I've only tried the free version, I'm not sure if you can export MIDI from it, or if you've to essentially print your MIDI into Auria much like with DS at the moment. I know it certainly doesn't have multitrack stem export and I bought DS knowing that that particular feature will be released in the near future.

    All the best.

  • Agreed, though Drum Session is closer to Rock Drum Machine 4 in terms of purpose and functionality. I really do like RDM4's pattern editor though, very intuitive.

I bought Drum Session. But going by this thread I might not of.

In short: best drum machine for iOS to date, for certain uses. It's better than anything i've tried, both with sounds and functions.

(User reviews in iTunes did't help me either. Maybe the early versions were very buggy? )

The timeline method is fantastic. Just like Easy Drummer, and is very fast. I will be using it constantly.
One request: when you drag the upper loop bar (selecting the loop sections), the timeline will not scroll beyond the visible screen as you drag. It needs to be able to keep scrolling so you can go go beyond the visible screen, and not have to stop, move the timeline, and do it again, which is very cumbersome. Seems like a simple fix. Zoom ( in and out) would also be great.

    Thanks.
