I am debating getting egoist and/or cyclop.

I seem to think i have other stuff that sort of sounds like cyclop. I have FM4, TeraSynth, iMS20 and iDS10.

But I dont think i have anything like Egoist on my iPad.

Can anyone who uses Cyclop comment on how good and different it is compared to the ones above. Just curious.

Very different, egoist is a sample slicer sequencer with a lot of randomization possibilities, doubled with a groovebox and cyclop is a monophonic synth with bpm sync (link) modulation and fx

Both are great but very modern electronic music oriented

I'd pick egoist first (I made full minimalist tunes with it)

  • Plus 1 for Egoist, and another plus is that the BASS (from egoist) sends MIDI out to what ever you send it to...

    Works well with Cyclop ;))

  • I bought Egoist ,but it seems there is no way to assign midi CC to pitch, reverse, attack and other options per slice . I've send email to the support team ,so if not possible thankfully I'll refund the app.
Too bad because it's the only app it can slice a loop so quick and play it instantly with a midi controller (although it can't record samples). It was the only reason I bought it.

I also have Sector but although they have similarities they sound completely different . IMO Sector is for going crazy and not always musical (have to use the sequencer every time to force retain the rhythm's beat.)

  • Man, Obscurium is pretty awesome, for driving other VSTs that is. Haven't explored the synth much.

    Really really interesting tool.

  • Is Turnado really that good? What are its advantages to FabFilter Volcano 2?

    Yes

You can do MUCH more types of effects in Turnado then in Volcano 2. But I must admit that even when I use Turnado in a project within Auria, if I need to apply modulations, I mainly use Volcano.

  • The US vs Canadian exchange rate really sucks. I am still on the fence if its really worth it.

Is anyone willing to post any tracks they have done where they used Egoist? Preferably something with a mix of acoustic and electronic instruments. I am still trying to figure out if this would work for me or whether its money better spent someplace else.

I guess the obvious comparative question would be; what else ya got in mind?

Thank you, @Gratouilli! But is there anything I can do with Turnado that I cannot already with Volcano, Saturn and Timeless working in tandem? Besides controlling multiple FX with one knob, which doesn't have much of an appeal to me...

  • I got Egoist. I didn't know what I was missing. Very cool. I have Turnado and don't care for it but Egoist is awesome!

Well it works outside of Auria which is a bonus lol

I love making wav files of a couple minutes long with a whole bunch of different unrelated sounds, samples, noises, instrument hits etc pasted end to end, loading it up in the slicer and just seeing what happens.

Yes... It's true... And it's one important point for sure.
But, in fact, more than thinking "what can Tornado or the others do", I would say that don't use them in the same way and for the same goal.
When I want to play my guitar in Auria, I mainly "plug" the Fab Filters.
I use tornado more on my drum tracks to turn them crazy with the loopers and stutter effects...
Really, I'm happy with all these apps.

If you delve into the edit panel it's capable of some really crazy stuff , probably more ' out there ' than the fab filters. can be a but tempremental tho lol

Well, there goes my Saturday night. I was on the very verge of going to the gym, but I am grateful for your suggested distraction..... :)

happy to distract! For an extra layer of power / mayhem you can load Egoist in Modstep. If you set Egoist to keyboard mode you can use Modstep to sequence up to 256 samples simply by triggering pattern changes and slices. So fun!

I guess I have nothing else really set on. I think I was thinking of recording weird acoustic instruments and slicing them up and seeing it I can get funky rhythms out of them.

    Egoist.

Just spent a happy hour chopping the shit out of 'Almost Independence Day'. An eye-(and ear)-opener...

  • Is Egoist a 4/4 machine or does it have more time sig. options?

I was messing around with spanish guitar and cartoon sound effects, kazoos and such. Was funky to me. 8). I will see if I can dig up a clip tomorrow.

You can't adjust time sig but you can set the pattern length from one to sixteen steps on the slicer and bass independantly. Drums are set at sixteen steps though. Wish you could adjust it. I typicaly use Patterning for the drums when using it though.

There's lots you can get out of Turnado that you can't get out of those three. Like, lots. And it's awesome but, imho, none of it will sound as good as the things you can get out of those three! That is, using it as a delay or a distortion alone will always sound less-than when compared to the Fab filter plugs. So will using it as a simple delay+distortion for a guitar or something. Turnado is, to me, all about doing multi-effects all together. And taking things to 'something totally different' land where your sound source is more like an oscillator is to a synth. It's awesome for that. Oh, and tempo based effects. If that's not your thing, I'd just learn V, S and T more because they're so deep. Certainly several of Turnado's tricks can be accomplished with those three along with some clever routing and automation in Auria. But right there, you can see part of the value something like Turnado provides: shaving all of that overhead of setting up the different effects, routing them, switching between them, automating them... Also, controlling the Turnado effects goes beyond the big knob thing—you have the XY pads and if you take the time to set up a few presets on them it can be quite a joy to physically play your effects along with your tune.

    Egoist.

    +10.

+5 for the slicing and an extra 5 because of how easy it is to get interesting polyrhythms out of it. Think you'll love it.

  • Hadn't opened this thread because I own all of the SB stuff I want. Glad I opened it though! I haven't actually used Egoist in a long time because it is frustratingly laggy on my iPad 3. I got a used Air 1 recently and totally forgot about Egoist. Can't wait to have at it again. Totally inspiring app for me.

Anyone heard anything about SB and Link?

  • I'm so deep into the FF plugins now that I am not spending on anything not at least as good. Already ditched MicroWarmer because I have VintageWarmer 2 in my Mac, and Saturn+Pro L does the same job and more so much better IMHO.

Thank you for your review of Turnado, @syrupcore! It seems an amazing tool, but I'm more and more convinced it's not my cup of tea.

I would like Link on everything (ketchup on chips), but especially on SB objects, but am happy that Egoist works well/starts with AUM.

Have also just come back to the app and find that it (read: me) is very hit and miss. One of those things that some hours I stumble about and can't get anything to sound worth my time, but then others, whoosh, in walks the impossible groove/feel/collision. Strikes me that the overall facility of so many iOS apps perhaps 'flattens me out' sometimes. I'm just looking unconsciously for an effective or elegant sound not a breakthrough sound that really expresses what I'm after....sorry not explaining this very well, but Egoist is one of the routes through I think as long as I remember that striving and failing sometimes is just another necessary step on the road etc.

  • Can someone post a sample of something created in Egoist? I usually use Samplr for slicing, etc--how does Egoist compare?

I bought Turnado for full price and think it's worth every penny FWIW.

  • Has anyone been able to sync start Samplr via AUM?
I can't figure it out. I was able to sync start it up but only with Midi Link Sync B Coding Cod.
