    @grizzlegritz hey dude,good job on your first track! Welcome to the club! I liked how you varied the beat to keep it interesting.I think it's the perfect length,it doesn't out stay it's welcome.I look forward to hearing future endeavours. :grin:

    As to length, it's 'ditty' length... ditty defined as a 'short simple poem or song' which was inspired by Tush by zztop and the whole twitter thing. I read once how record executives go through demos, listening to 5 or 10 seconds and reject immediately.or listen longer.

    Every Monday I receive a group of songs recommended by Spotify based on my listening habits and songs I save, and maybe my own collection... and I find myself impatiently going through them and only now and then listening to a full song... and only once in awhile finding something I click on an album or artist to listen further. Maybe that is simply the explosion of choices we now have with the streaming and the ease of cheap and easy production.

    With the wish of this forum now being asked to limit ourselves to posting one song a month, I wondered if it would be interesting and creatively challenging in his time-challenged age, to add a song group that is more narrowly defined: two minute ditties by singer-songwriters of mobile music. Songs would be two minutes or less, instrumented and sung by the creator, and limited to starting and finishing pieces in iOS?

    1980.The Oi era. Three bored factory working lads. Weekend fun. Musically we were heavily into the 4Skins and The Business. After the Rejects appeared on TOTP they were dumped!

    I've tried to create a slower pace of " Yob Rock " here, so hopefully it's easier to swear along to. Guitarism, Ifretless bass, Cubasis... etc... etc...

    The 3 " Oi Oi's at the very end was our calling to arms and are dedicated to Dibsy, one of the three in our crew, sadly taken at a young age. He probably bludgeoned his way into Hell because he wouldn't have enjoyed heaven. I know your listening big man ... Oi Oi Mate.

    You really get those guitar apps working convincingly don't you? Sounds great and the song has a strong hook. Love the lyrical majesty of "come 'ere and get it, if you think you're fuckin ard enough", takes me back to my days in the North Stand (where I was mostly hiding, admittedly). Fits v well with the backstory. Great stuff!

    Cheers very much @crouchie. Really appreciate your words on the guitar work & hook. That & the singing (to a much, much lesser extent) is where I spend most of my jamming time these days trying to up my game. North Stand! Which ground/team? Here's hoping your experiences on the terraces (how I miss them) were happy, trophy winning times.......depending on your answer as to which team of course :wink:
    Thanks again.

    Brighton. Years in the wilderness, now briefly living the dream, depending on the next few games... Many happy memories on the terraces with little brother and mates, avoiding a petrol bomb at The Den, interacting with the constabulary at Selhurst. I'm a respectable GP now so it's all behind me...

    Aye! Aye! He's a top manager & a good, honest, decent bloke. And I do love a day trip to the seaside. I find it's a lot more sociable to share an icecream & not hurt these days. Ouch.....the Den! Yep. She was a tough nut to crack. Many nuts did over the years I'd imagine. :wink:

  • @ crouchie yeah I agree. This song is going to just stay as a rough 4 track style demo song. I always tend to leave things unfinished. I started 2 other songs that got me busy. ... I tracked it in rough and rushed conditions. Maybe ill come back and rebuild it later. Thank you

  • Is there a limit to how much songs I put up in a month? I been really doing nothing but writing!

    I think Our Glorious Leader addressed this recently:

    https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/comment/222876/#Comment_222876

    Essentially, one a month and if you're lucky enough (like you!) to be writing more than that, just pick the best of the bunch...

    You should try it out with your Ukulele: strum a few chords in the free Music Memo app, then tap the little drum and bass buttons, and watch as miraculously your shite strumming turns into a 3 piece band. You can then send the whole lot to GB and edit the bass and drums. It's crazy.

    This is almost scarily efficient. Have tried it three or four times with lyrics and it's made me realize that my natural style is to be in a third rate bar band. It's good for a man to have the AI explain his true level to him....

  • @JohnnyGoodyear
    Hey thanks for the listens and insights. I enjoyed reading all the tasty reflections in your binge of reviews. Always much to glean from your snappy critiques good sir .
    Cheers, bad

    @badrico nice groove man. Great chill out for a lazy Sunday morning. May be some vocal samples would have just added that extra something.

    • I agree .. Some kinda something should join the porridge.
      Glad it was good Sunday chill for you and thanks for the listen.

    Glad you enjoyed, and happy the reedonkulous fade worked for you, it's a personal indulgence slipping in some odd bits on the way outa the desert.
    Thanks for the listen

    I should have said a thank you first for your review. More violence?...........interesting & @Jocphone mentioned similar with the music. I really do understand. Think it's a mixture of my age & very limited musical knowledge of "how & when" to inject that threatening feel to proceedings using a guitar (app).

    If you ever want assistance with adding a bit of 'Raw Power' to an upcoming track, gimme a shout. I may not be in the game for SOTMC at the moment but would be a happy to inject a touch of violence to one of your tracks bluey.

    Thank you very much oh kind sir. That's a beautiful, much appreciated offer of assistance & one I am excited by. Thanks....wow! I will borrow Mr Shakespeare for now as I need another coffee before my brain kicks in:

    "How far that little candle throws his beams. So shines a good deed in a naughty world."

    Thank you. :smile:

  • Hello all,

    Just popping in to say hi and also to say thanks for the feedback on @LostBoy85 and my recent track.

    Sorry I've been absent as of late - but I just cant keep up with the popularity of this thread these days (both songs published and comments posted!) Glad it's flourishing though.

  • It is increasingly difficult to keep up :)

    Also it takes a lot of time to listen and comment on all that is posted, so from next month I will be asking that contributors only post one song per month - otherwise the multiple submissions just add to the volume of work that is required to give proper feedback on all the contributions.

    The great thing about these threads is that you really can expect decent feedback on your work, but of course the price for receiving that attention is that you reciprocate and return the favour - most contributors are very good at doing this. A couple are not, and I would expect them to receive less and less feedback as a result, because I think posting several months in a row and not giving feedback to anyone else is pretty lame.

  • Not only lame but not in the spirit of the game at all. Give and take (and I notice that some decent soul put the give part first...).

  • Hello, @LostBoy85 and @Matt_Fletcher_2000! Congrats for the song. I liked the dynamic variations of the arrangement: the breakdowns and beat changes are very well placed. The vocal performance is great, as always, and the arrangement and effects for the backing vocals are also very nice. Congratulations!

  • Hi, @orchardman: liked the guitars in your rain song: very nice and memorable melodies, and good tone. The vocals could have been faded a little higher, they sounded a little buried in my speakers, and since it's not exactly a busy mix (in fact is very sparse, which suits the song very well), this could be improved. All in all, a very enjoyable tune: thumbs up!

  • Hey, @acromus: nice intro, and very relaxing beat. Some of the tones reminded me of the DX7 tones used by the likes of Phil Collins and A-Ha in the late 80's. Looking forward to listen to the finished work!

    Good shout boss! I love this club & it is mainly through the feedback kindly received that a novice like moi can learn, grow, improve & floursh. Can then pass that invaluable advice/tips/info onto folk further down the line.
    Time will always be against us & that's hopefully when that "spirit" Mr Goodyear mentions kicks in to help.

    Speaking of time & running out of it.............are you listening Real Madrid? :smile:

  • Phew ! Lots this month.

    @carol - Forest Circles:
    https://m.soundcloud.com/terrible-void/forest-circles
    Great title, the piece itself is rather 'amorphous', bordering on the cacophonous. An interesting texture at 4:50 ish, but obscured by other 'atonalities'.

    @mschenkel.it - Remix This II - Thavius Beck
    https://m.soundcloud.com/schen1/remix-this-ii-thavius-beck
    Sounds pretty cool, but I've not heard the original, so I don't know how your remixes differs from it. Drums a bit loud / abrupt at 1:20. Good to hear a finished track / remix from Launchpad - I couldn't do that.

    @theconnactic - Mocó:
    https://m.soundcloud.com/dimitridealencar1/moco
    Pretty accomplished all round, does have a live feel to it. Shades of Al di Meola (?) in the solo work. Pinched harmonic could be better (I know it's a minor point).

    @orchardman - A Sacrifice:
    https://m.soundcloud.com/orchardman/a-sacrifice
    Really lovely voice and well phrased against the very appropriate instrumentation. Rhythm guitar timing is a bit loose. Minor key end section works well (shades of Massive Attack). A good one !

    @Richtowns - Gadget Track Reggae:
    https://m.soundcloud.com/richtowns/gadget-track-reggae
    Didn't come in until 0:14, works pretty well as an electronic reggae-esque track (i used to be in a reggae /soca band so I have some knowledge of this kind of thing) not wild about the samples - a bit repetitive. Interesting to hear a track like this coming out of Gadget.

    @funjunkie27 - Dance of Today:
    https://m.soundcloud.com/funjunkie27/dance-of-today
    The drums don't quite gel for me (the snare sound a bit too static), the other instrumentation works fine together. Could do with being developed in terms of a composition, in my view

    @crouchie - prop:
    https://m.soundcloud.com/dot-echo-dot/prop
    A fave. Crouchie's signature 'nervous energy' sound shines throughout. Real talent here, musically and lyrically. The 'stop' at 1:52 is a tad abrupt, but not overly so. Little else to criticise - which is unusual for me !

    @NoiseHorse - Jet Plane:
    https://m.soundcloud.com/heimie-andthe-spelunkers/jet-plane
    Bit of an odd one this, the track uses some quite exotic harmonic stuff ( a la Todd Rundgren), but the execution is somewhat lacking in parts. The timing is loose in terms of the instrumentation and the vocals. I should say though, that it has a naive charm which appealed to me.

    @Bluepunk - Cum ere n gedit:
    https://m.soundcloud.com/mptyofeverything/cum-ere-n-gedit
    I've said it before, but I find it interesting to hear iOS technology to create a ye-olde punk track. I like the drums and the stop / start timing and the impassioned vocal delivery. I remember reading about the Cockney Rejects and the whole 'Oi' thing in 'Sounds' years ago. I used to have some Docs like that (in the track image)

    @ion677 - Keys jam:
    https://m.soundcloud.com/ion677/keys-jam
    Nice jam, with some very cool harmonic / melodic things going on. I'd like to hear it developed into a full track.

    @trackedout - Sounds from Friday morning:
    https://m.soundcloud.com/user4444015/sounds-from-friday-morning
    The production is pretty lo-fi, but there's quite a good song lurking beneath the production. The electric piano section works surprisingly well (relative to the grungy sounds around it).

    @achromus - Black Suspension:
    https://m.soundcloud.com/achromus-1/black-suspension
    Very well composed, has a plaid-esque feel, which not many people can pull off and elements of Peter Gabriel's 'Passion' material towards the end. Great range of sounds from Gadget too. A mature track.

    @LostBoy85 - Crashland (co-written with MattFletcher2000):
    https://m.soundcloud.com/leo-b-5/crashland
    Really not my thing, but very well crafted nonetheless, with flowing sections that seamlessly flow into each other. Perhaps too many vox overdubs towards the end (?) I get the impression that you are striving to create a 'pop' song and there's nothing wrong with that, but it adheres to some of the formulaic elements that that requires.

    @badrico - Temple Dust:
    https://m.soundcloud.com/badrico/temple-dust
    Seamless and effortless flow. Progresses well in a quite hypnotic manner over it's duration. This kind of track isn't easy to do, so well done !

    @richardyot - Kings of Nothing:
    https://m.soundcloud.com/richardyot/kings-of-nothing
    I see an improvement in your material over the months, the overall production on this one is improved - the vocal in particular. Minor point but the intro is very abrupt straight in - needs a fade (?)

    @technemedia - Elephant in the Room:
    https://m.soundcloud.com/peter-mcclard/elephant-in-the-room
    The elephant sound gets a tad much, but an interesting track nonetheless. Chaotic, but in a good way, this kind of thing appeals to me. Perhaps a tad more structure would pull it together a tad more (?)

    @rickwaugh - Fracture:
    https://m.soundcloud.com/rickwaugh/fracture
    A very ambitious effort and you've pulled it off, in my view. Has a 'left-field-Tull' feel to it to these ears. I like the guitar stuff towards the end, pretty adept !

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    I've reviewed only one entry per artist, listening to the track I preferred.

    Sometimes I feel like the 'bad' reviewer in that I tend to point out the negatives (as well as the positives), but I do feel that's the best way to respond here. I certainly don't intend to diminish anyone's enthusiasm for creating their tracks !

    Finally, apologies from me for deleting my own work-in-progress tracks that I submitted for previous SOTMC's. Unfortunately those links are now dead, as the tracks were all subsequently reworked for my album and were out of date.

    ok , thanks

  • @richardyot and others....just wondering if SOTMC is scalable in its current form. As more entries appear per month, the ability to provide feedback becomes more challenging. Would it make sense to cap the number of entries we provide feedback on? I know that might mean some entries won't receive feedback, but just throwing it out there to see how you, and others, feel.

    Thank u, v kind words, means a lot!

  • @Igneous1 Thanks for your positive comments. Ah yes..."Sounds." That was my preferred read back then. They tended to have a bit more of the newer, braking punk bands within their pages than the NME or MM.
    Looking forward to listening to your new projects & after enjoying your album, you've set yourself a very high bar. Thanks again. :smile:

  • Hey @richardyot - very nice entry this month! I like it!! Good one!! Nice vibe, nice drums, nice guitar work, nice singing and melody, nice composition, nice synthy stuff, that break parts with drums and guitar is a very nice touch!

    I do think that the voice is too loud in the mix. Its hard to get it right, I know. But its too loud for me (my opinion). I am tempted to record your track to my PC and edit it a bit with iZotope Ozone, to enhance the depth of your song. It has the potential to sound much better in my opinion. As it is, it is good, but I think a remastering/eq-ing (and the mix of the voice) could substantially improve the sound of it all.

  • Thank you so much for the review, @Igneous1!

  • edited April 2016

    And now for something completely different....

    This is more in the area of what I primarily create, my Formbank material is a side-project.

    Anyway, the track was initially created in Noatikl (v3) and was subsequently reworked on the desktop. There's quite a lot of subtle spatial stuff going on, but it is subtle ! Headphone listening recommended.

  • The more I think about it the more excited I am about this forum. To know that there's people doing exactly what in doing around the world is awesome. Thank you @richardyot
