  • @trackedout, definitely mix issues there. Couldn't hear the vocals very well, and the instruments were muddy. Too much bass and guitar, I think. I also like a bit more rhythmic variety, some breaks. Loved the end, just kind of snapped off there.

  • @achromus, I don't know what glitches you're talking about. That was lovely. Great vibe and feel, it felt like a dance. Love the way the layers kept sliding in, and they complemented everything that went on before.

  • @orchardman, great feel to that. I was a bit unsure about the lead guitar tone, but you started to sing, and I though, ah, that sounds punk - and then the guitar tone made sense. Vocal needs to come up in the mix - should be sitting on top, your voice sounds great.

  • @LostBoy85 and @Matt_Fletcher_2000, great tune and mix. Everything sits beautifully. That could be on the radio right now. Builds nicely all the way through. Vocals are wonderful.

  • @badrico, great sounds and mix, but I was waiting for more. I guess it's ambient music, and that's fine, but it's kind of long for me.

  • @LostBoy85 & @Matt_Fletcher_2000 Good to hear you back Matt & in teaming up with Leo there's no chance of a crash landing. All us passengers are safe onboard to enjoy the flight with a few bevvies. I listened a few times yesterday & again this morning. Rick is right. It's like I've just turned on the Radio 1 breakfast show & you two are smashing the airways, sorry airwaves apart. Ultra professional sound, mix & production. Top lyrics & singing which you maintain throughout all your songs. With the addition of Matts expertly injected dance vibe & rhythm section, it's a joy to experience.
Vocal highlight.........All. Music highlight......All. My offbeat head nodding was unstoppable & what an energising way to begin the week. Fantastic stuff. This has reminded me to ask that I'd love to hear a remix/dance version of "Moraira Sky." Just in time for the summer. Bloody well done you two. Very impressed.

Thanks very much. There were glitches but I uploaded a new version with fixes plus changing the time signature to 3/4.

  • @orchardman thanks a lot mate :) yes,I'm sure this would also sound good with a guitar arrangement. The cool thing about collabs is that you get to try things that you might not otherwise do.I like lots of different styles of music, last month Marcel and I did a guitar song as that's what he kicks ass at.This month I tried something that Matt kicks ass at with the electronic, dance stuff.Next month, who knows? I could try and convince @Richardyot to go gaze at some shoes with me!! Its all good fun anyway

  • @rickwaugh I appreciate your kind words mate.As far as being radio ready, well I know I've got a lot to learn still...but I'm pleased that I'm getting better :) thanks man.

  • @bluepunk haha! Sometimes I wonder with your feedback if you're actually my mum in disguise!! :D :D. Thanks very much mate.Youve always been very supportive of me and I really appreciate it.Im glad you like the song so much.Like I said above I know I've still got loads to learn but I'm having a blast and Matt was awesome to work with.

  • @funjunkie27 I liked what there was of your track, but it definitely needs something more: some progression, journey, some more ideas to take it places. The bassline riff at the start is static during the whole track, so while you do build other elements on top it never feels as if its changing gear. I would have some more dramatic changes to surprise and entertain the listener.

If only I was prolific enough to consider giving my songs to someone else then maybe, at the moment I'm struggling to keep up with the one song a month pace. We could start a Barry Gibb tribute band though.

haha, it's a great song son. Now don't forget to eat all those greens up!

  • I'm a little behind on comments this month - sorry, I'll catch up ASAP.

    My entry for the month:

    lyrics are here

  • I've updated the SoundCloud and the first page.

I have a couple of thoughts:

Would it be worth having two threads each month? One for experimental and EDM stuff, and one for for more traditional instrumentals and songs? It's clear that there's two distinct camps here (has been for a long time), and it might make the feedback more focused.

I think I am also going to ask people to limit themselves to one entry per month, if you have more then choose your best one :)

For what it's worth I enjoy the variety. And how will we know which thread to go for? Oh the decisions! ;-)
Struggling to do a tune a month tbh so that's no problem for me...

I hear you, my concern was just that the more trad songwriter types sometimes struggle to give useful feedback to the more experimental types, because they don't always "get it". I'll leave things as they are for now.

I would add, however, that this was a brilliant idea of yours and you have created a really honest and rewarding thread. Well done for that, and thank you.

It was entirely for selfish reasons :) I need this as much as anyone.

@crouchie really like your entry this month, great structure, great choice of sounds, and a nice blend of edgy and melodic (my favourite: spicy but with just the right amount of sweetness). Love the bass sound and riff, the vocal melody is good, and the little high-pitched wah~wah that insistently nags my right ear throughout.

Then the wobble bass that comes in towards the end gives the track a great lift and takes it to the finish. Great job.

  • @NoiseHorse like this one overall, has a lot of charm and some good melodies. There's some timing issues at the start, it sounds like the guitar and piano aren't quite in sync, but in a way that kinda adds to the lofi charm.

My main crit is that the arrangement could do with more variety and dynamics: the piano plays throughout, but it could do with a break now and again to add some flow and life to the song, break it up. The vocal melody could vary a little more as well.

It's a good song though, and I enjoyed listening to it.

  • @ion677 nice and very chilled track - could be a little longer and more developed, but it's a very nice listen.

  • @trackedout wasn't sure what this was going to be like after seeing it spammed all over the forum :)

Turned out to be pretty good, in a weird and noisy kinda way. I really like the vocal, and kudos for the out-of-tune piano at the two-minute mark, I've never heard anything quite like that before. The whole thing is quite heavy and oppressive, especially with the distortion on the vocals. Nice guitar riff at the intro as well. Good art/noise song, thanks for posting it.

  • @orchardman your wife has the prettier voice :)

However this track (Swansea Rain) has a great insistent guitar riff, and an overall vibe that I love. There's still a little hint of the ethnic/folk theme that's usually in your work (is it scale perhaps?) but it's edgy and gritty sounding. That sound with the female vocal might be quite something.

  • @LostBoy85 I think for me that the vocal and the music don't really mesh that well in the first half of the track - it might have been interesting to hear a vocoder maybe to blend better with the electronic music, or maybe just a softer vocal tone. In the second half it all works much better because the music is bigger and suits the vocal style much better, but at the start it might have worked better if you sung it more softly, or had some kind of treatment to blend the vocal and music better.

The track has a great structure and develops well, and by the second half is pretty rocking.

  • @badrico Temple Dust, I like the hypnotic groove that starts this one off and very slowly builds up the track, very nice sounds, and nice atmosphere here. Like the little electric piano riffs that sprinkle the track, really nice feel to them.

Track is quite long, but gets away with it, although the last minute could have been cut.

Truth be told Richard I think most people on the planet have a prettier voice

  • bluepunk thank you . yeah its one of my noisier ones vocals were done riding a bicycle around town just with ipad mic. i dont like to get technical . im not much of a guitar player though but im glad u liked it

  • @richardyot After your huge review session here, you deserve a rest sir. Soak up the praise for your song.
"Kings of Nothing...The world will laugh & we won't care." Intelligent lyrics that will mean a lot to some folk. It certainly resonates with me. Now, them there drums! Have you been taking lessons? Bloody Nora! Yum, yum, I love the drum. The tom work on the intro is very good....natural, real. The snare is crisp with a hint of "buzz," again natural, real. Perfectly placed fills......with accents! At 2.56 have you changed to rim shots? That snare filled my guts with yum ness. Simple.....your best drum track that I've heard so far. You've obviously been working hard on the rhythm section.
The vocals sound very clear indeed. I hear the wee intricacies, the character in them. Is there less reverb involved than on other entries?
The dreamy, flowing sound that sits by the guitar. The flicky, echoey bits I hear (guitar, I think). The up & down feedbacky sound from 3.14 to 3.27 is scrumptious & edgy.
The drumming, clarity of vocals......ah bollox, it's easier to say this song is banging hard on "Feel the breeze" door & shouting through the letterbox...."I'm coming to get you..........."
    Really, very impressed Richard.

@Bluepunk thanks for the review. Sadly, I can't take any credit for the drums in the track, they were all the work of this "Darcy" chick I met recently, in some place called GarageBand:

And yes, I finally dialed down that reverb, a little.
