Modstep triggering elastic drums - Help not working

I've tried sending notes to elastic drums on channel 1. Played around with the pad setup in modstep, but I can't for the life of me get modstep to trigger the drum slots in elastic.

I'm sure this used to work for me a few months ago.

  • Didn't any in depth attempt but I can confirm. Not working as external midi nor when loaded as IAA in MS.

  • Hi, I just tested with iRig Midi and I am afraid to say that Midi trigger seems to be fucked at the moment, I guess with update 1.7.4 already. Sorry about that. No Modstep error, ED error. I will work on a quick fix.

  • But you can still use it with its own sequencer and Link together with modstep!

  • Thanks @magnum38. I would greatly appreciate that since ED is the only drum synth that satisfies my taste for drum synths. I lost hope for a good ios drum synth till you showed up :-)

  • Hi, Elastic Drums update 1.7.6 is out :) Elastic Drums is receiving midi trigger again. You might delete and download the app, if an update doesn't bring the triggers to work. Here is a vid, how I use midi notes/cc in AUM in addition to IAA sync:

  • Thanks for the work and also some extra sauce for the vid @magnum38, much appreciated.

updated elastic and then tried sending midi from modstep, and i got nothing. i was already red eye from all the tears when i read your note about deleting and re-downloading, so i did it with elastic and with modstep too. and man, watafak. modstep feels much smoother and i even have a whole new demo song!! and elastic drums behaves so nicely now as an IAA as well [from the 5mins or so that i played with it].

i started doing itunes backups back in february but im guessing that is not the best way to go with things it seems, or maybe the app updates are a bit weird? fak

but i can confim that elastic drums works really well so far. and deleting it and downloading it again is probably the best way to go [make sure you manually copy your presets through itunes though]

  • Hi,
I made another video - showing how to receive Midi triggers in ED from Modstep.
I hope this answers all your questions ;)

Fantastic video man. nicely done :)
i gotta ask. how did you record the screen ? it looks so smooth. i need a good screen recorder app for my own modstep tutorials but i'm not sure which one to get yet....

  • I just recorded with quicktime player via lightning cable. but you get a huge delay with this method and fucked up audio, because all IAA/AB stuff is properly working with that solution. it would be great otherwise

  • Has anyone got this working? I've tried following the vid instructions but I'm getting nothing.

Not sure, but with midi-learn ED listens to modstep's c1-a1 notes in the piano roll, but with area c2 selected. (Longpress deletes midi assignments.)

Ah ok thanks, maybe I've selected the wrong notes on the piano roll.

  • Ruismaker drum apps work the best in modstep. And they sound great!

Yeah, they're on my Xmas list :)

Setting up note triggering from ModStep to ED has to be the buggiest, most user-unfriendly nightmare of a fail I've yet to experience on iOS.

I eventually managed to get one drum triggered, then the others. They have to be set up one at a time. I was doing it in exactly the same way when it wasn't working, but then it did. Go figure.

To see if anything saved, I quit ED, loaded it up again and no, the MIDI learn was unlearned. No problem, I'd got it working (eventually) two minutes previously, I'd just repeat the process and try and find a better save option. Except it wouldn't work this time, again. Same steps, same settings...nothing. Not working this time, MIDI learn in ED wasn't paying attention.

    Buggy, temperamental user unfriendly nightmare.

Same process, different result, and as usual the tutorial skips important steps.

    Aaaaaargh!

If I recall, I had a tough time with ED, but Patterning works beautifully for me in Modstep.

Nah, can't figure that out either - I can get it to trigger Patterning patterns, but not singular sounds.

I've given up on ElasticDrums, I can't get it to work and without a proper tutorial from either app I have to conclude it isn't possible.

Oh, yeah, you can't play it like a kit. You can use midi learn to trigger patterns.
For that, you'd need Ruismaker. The drum kits available in the Modstep sampler are pretty great, if not as tweakable as ED.

If you really like ED, you need to make your patterns within the app and then trigger them in Modstep.

Oh right, ok. I was hoping to build clips in ModStep and link them to ED for the drum sounds. Nearly worked...seems like I'm trying to do the impossible, but the vid in this thread looked like it was doing this.

Never mind, I'll put Ruismaker FM on my wishlist.

I have done this with both the ruis and also use Gladstone in Gadget for acoustic drums, works a treat.
Once you can get thois sorted ModStep unveils one of its strong points.....program your pattern(s) into a clip, then long press the clip and you can save/export it.....you can them import that clip into other projects......with all of the patterns available you can make several variations of a pattern in the same clip and build a library of building blocks for other tunes.

Ah didn't think of trying Gladstone, I'll have a go with this now (cue shouting and sounds of things being thrown around the room)

  • Gladstone Works perfectly - picked up my ModStep clip straight away, and I was able to beef it up with other Gadgets. Wish ElasticDrums did this, but never mind.

    wait, what?
You wrote midi in Modstep and pointed it at gladstone?

Yeah! C1 to A1 notes in the ModStep piano roll, trigger separate drum pads in Gladstone - should work with iM1 as well :) No fannying around with MIDI mapping either.

I have to agree. Love ED with reckless abandon but using another sequencer with it is a PITA. Would love to see 1) preset note numbers for triggering and 2) a way to adjust and save different preset note numbers for when a given triggering app can't be changed, preferably via simple (MIDI note) number-entry UI, not just MIDI learn. MIDI learn is awesome if you're using an external device to trigger ED (like the beat step pro, etc). App to app MIDI learn is a generally awful experience though and seems particularly problematic with ED.

Possibility for entry on the 'maybe one day' list @magnum38?
