Apple going down - it's time to think of the future

Apple stocks in free fall ... plus, experience shows they have no intention to support old devices ...
two reasons iPad apps are not future proof, at all.
it would be a shame to loose all that great musicmaking software.
how can we save it for posteriority?
anybody working on iPad emulators already?

  • dude, they have over 100 billion in the bank. They aren't going anywhere any time soon.

  • -19% in iPad sales ... in 5 years max. they're gone, following the iPod

  • I’m moving everything back to pencil and paper, for after the Internet.

  • you're making electronic music with pencil and paper? i could see the context if you said "i'm moving back to hardware synths"

  • As of 2016, 216 billion in the bank, and Q1 2016 was their largest quarter ever. Sure forecasts as down for upcoming quarters, but I doubt they're just going to abandon a whole ecosystem with millions of users and start something new just for the hell of it. They'll innovate and people will buy more products. Innovate in Apple terms probably means releasing it in pink but people still buy new things.

  • In the early 90's Apple was dead. I could have bought stock at $13. They were selling framed certificates at Mac World in Boston. Stupid me... :o

    like the iPod?

  • Sonic Pi on Raspberry Pi is the future

  • I'm 47. I quite expect what I have with my iPad Air2 to be useful for many moons yet.

If nothing else was made for my iPad from this point onwards, I could see what I have lasting as long as my iPad lasts.

  • it won't be as long as you live because you can't change the battery ... i was thinking the same with my iPod 3, just to run Filtatron... now the battery lasts about 5 minutes

RasPis themselves are a fad, i'm convinced... but you have a point with the software, because i'm sure it's easy to compile on other Linux / POSIX systems (unlike iPad software - for now)

Agree not as long as I live and could break down tomorrow as any hardware can.

The battery's are not as bad as they used to be and as long as it holds some power I can use it plugged in. My last iPod was bought in 2006 and is still going strong.

I think technology is likely to be very different in 10 years time, as it was 10 years before. I would not be interested in using much of my tech from 10 years ago now except for the odd hardware synth. I doubt I will be using the tech I have now in ten years prior.

  • I don't think they abandoned the iPod. They still make them and most of the newer models include a phone with them.

    200+ billion.

And they're making more and more.

It's not that Apple isn't profitable, but that they're running out of new people to sell iPhones to.

Surprised they have missed out on the dog market. The idog collar could open up new markets :p

it will be different, but personally, i am very much interested in using synth technology from 30 or more years ago ...
and i think lots of other people are, too, considering the resale prices for vintage hardware :-)

even in terms of software, there is some 20 years old stuff that is still cool, like SAM or CSound just to name two examples. it would be a pity if this software became unusable.

Apple seems to forget the tiny music and art designing market that kept the company alive on hard times. (Before i-devices came)
If they re-focus to that market soon ,meaning no more incompatible forced updates ,stable OS, meaningful hardware updates ,they will gain that small but stable incoming profit again.
In the meantime , I find Windows 10 great and stable, bought a 19" multitouch screen and I am convinced I will get a surface pro or cheaper clone instead of a second iPad.

  • Seriously lol

  • As a longtime investor, I don't find Wall Street to give an accurate portrait of whether a company is going to be successful or not in the future. Facebook crashed after its IPO, and it has done very well. Netflix crashed and I bought it at $10 a share. It's true it has fallen back to $90 lately. Amazon has had a catastrophic fall this year, worse than Apple, but there is nothing wrong with Amazon. It is a very solid company with a bright future.

Apple is secretive and nobody on Wall Street knows what they are working on. Back in the day, Apple stock crashed all the time. Nobody on Wall Street had much of an opinion on the iPad, which hadn't been released yet.

I wouldn't abandon all hope yet.

  • Not sure how supporting old iPods is the answer to boosting sales again.

Anyway, it's the price we pay for progress. I intend to enjoy my iPad & the wealth of fantastic apps now, not worry about something 5+ years away.

    Regarding SAM

An iOS port as AU/IAA/AB would be quite neat :D

just to point out, the stocks thing was just clickbait - i really want to talk about future proofing the iPad software.
i don't doubt Apple will be with us for quite a while, because i don't see the US forcing them to pay taxes anytime soon.

(but if we have to talk stocks, i would never invest in Apple or Amazon, for moral reasons - unless it's indirect via some ETF or other index fund)

If southpole76 wants out and prefers to invest in older hardware synths, good luck.

You keep going on about the iPod when it's clear to see that iPod had to go because people started using their iPhones as Walkmen. I can't see that happening with the iPad.

And if they abandon iPad in 5 years then we'll probably have another 10 years of ipad music from now, to which I say: yeah! By then android will have caught up and we will have coughed up 100s of (insert your currency) which also means happiness all around.

i am investing in older hardware synths... it's going well.

i just want to make my investments into iPad apps safe, too. that's all.
