I fixed the midi channel issue. Now it responds on whatever channel you want whether using IAA midi or virtual midi. I'll put up a new beta and submit it to the app store tonight.

Nice! Thank you and congrats on sorting it.

  • I've enjoyed using this app, for the mostpart. But I find that the pattern quantization is all over the place. I get a lot of drifting and inconsistent hits, odd flams, etc. Is this something that will be addressed in the update?

  • pattern quantization is controlled by the "feel" slider - you can just turn it all the way down if you want everything "on the grid".

it was supposed to be a cool feature that emulates the MPC 60's inability to play several midi notes at the exact same time (it would shift some to save cpu) - but most people turn it up and think that Beat Machine can't play in time. I renamed the values on the slider in the new version. far left is "tight" and far right is "loose" plus lots of space in between these extremes.

Scratch my previous comment—pattern quantization is not all over the place, unlike my ability to notice the "feel" slider and reap the benefits of adjusting it. Thanks for the clarification, @dreamless. Looking forward to the update.

  • it's ok, people have been asking me about it since it came out. if you turn it all the way up and the tempo of your pattern is moderately slow (<100) then it can sound way out of time and pretty much useless. I usually have some combination of swing and feel to loosen up the patterns a bit so they don't sound like loops that repeat over and over. One measure is only 16 steps so they're pretty short.

Yeah, I think that feature certainly has merit. It's not unlike the "humanize" function in Logic I suppose. I just happen to not be very fond of humans so I tend to favor a strict grid. Perhaps a series of overlay tutorials / intro screens to point out that, and some of the other features when the app is opened for the first time could mitigate maroons like me posting silly rants on forums. Either way, I am glad to see it's possible to tighten things up in the app, it's certainly going to get a lot more use now.

Also - I bought Cubasis yesterday since it's on sale and I found some quirks in my midi implementation. It seems that triggering multiple note on events for the same pad only counts as one long note until a note off event comes in. This causes problems when one pad is triggered multiple times in a row (which is common). Does anyone know if other hosts behave this way? It's got me worried about my other app Jam Synth since it's possible to pluck the same note over and over which will send multiple note on events for the same note. I guess I could just have them send a note off immediately before sending a note on and see if that works without causing other problems.

  • Is there a way to trigger a sample only while the pad is being held down? Kind of like a one-shot but it stops when released?

  • @dreamless I just want to post and say a huge Thank You for continuing the development of this app!!!

Not currently from the app, but if you trigger the pads with another app you can get that exact functionality by enabling "receive note offs" in the settings. Works with Cubasis and Garageband. It will work with any app that sends a note off when you lift your finger. Of course, I could add it to the native pads too if you want to trigger them from Beat Machine.

Also, I fixed all the midi issues. Midi output is perfect in Cubasis, Beat Machine responds and sends on all channels, and the routing options between Beat Machine and Cubasis allow for many different setups. Do other hosts have routing like Cubasis? I hope so cause it's pretty good.

  • Well the update finally came out today. If ya bought it, can you leave another review for me? It doesn't even have to be a good review, just something real to help balance out the couple of one star "this app SUX" reviews that apple refuses to remove. If you were beta testing it but don't own it, just send me an email through testflight and i'll send back a promo code for it.

  • Done. Had to be a "good" review obviously! Thanks for the continued development. Link is very helpful.

  • @dreamless

Thanks for keeping up the good work.
Can't tell exactly why, but this app is the only one so far which gives me some sort of MPC feel ( workflow ).

  • Awesome, thank you!

  • I always liked BeatMachine as a quick sketch pad for beats and for more electronic sample stuff where acoustic drums are better handled on DrumPerfectPro.

30 years ago a studio would just have one drum machine or sampler with minimal specs & storage. That we have a digital slate tablet as powerful as laptops from a few years back with a choice of dozens of drum machine/rhythm app's is still amazing to me...I mean I think I got BeatMachine for a dollar or two!

We're very fortunate to be musicians/music producers in 2016...very spoiled indeed.

  • @dreamless seems brilliant upgrade, I'll try it again...Just, may I ask if there's midi learn ? (I can't remember that..)
Seems inappropriate with such great new features, but if it is good as it seems now, it needs midi learn...

  • I have some problems loading samples....After a moment they turn red and play no more.
Is there a length limit to samples, very short?
Some samples look different and some sound different....and end clicks on ALL imported samples?

Changing notes numbers in settings works fine up to pad 11, after that most can't be adjusted ...

i found the bug in the settings for midi note numbers... i'll fix that now. About the samples... are you loading them from documents or pasting them in? 16 or 24 bit? The sample name turns red when the sample can't be found... they are streamed from disk so they have to stay in one place while you play. Is your device low on storage? Hopefully iOS isn't clearing them out while you're still running the app.

  • One of the new colours

Found the bug with the samples. Just a stupid typo. Sorry! At least I tried to catch things like this with a beta test.

Thanks for reply, the samples are 16bit,44.1. I checked and converted the 24 bit in AS to 16.
I load the samples from AS, by clicking on "Audioshare in".

After I read your reply, I reopened Beat Machine and now everything is OK. I took a snapshot of how it looked ATM it happened.
They are (samples) inside BM, when I click on "samples". So that part is OK....
However there is a click on all samples (on the end part), almost looks like they are not positioned in the sampler correctly, if that makes sense, I have to bring back the end bar 1/4" or more.
Not a big deal, really, I am very glad you managed to fix the midi part.
MANY Thanks for the update :)

PS, one thing would be nice if you could adjust the TOP end of the END of sample bar, so it would work as fade out...it would be slanted to left...fade out in a way.

  • It just fixed itself then? Oh well, I think with the fix I just made it won't happen in the first place. Are you part of the beta test? I'm about to put up a new one.

    Yes, just fixed itself.
I am part of the BT...Honestly I don't know if I have enough time to beta test, I am beta testing on 3 Ape Soft apps at the moment...

Thats ok, as long as it's not a catastrophic error that makes it unusable. Thats the stuff that makes users lose their minds and write one star reviews. It was just a small typo. It looks in the wrong spot to stream the sample after you paste it from audioshare, but I guess after you re-save the kit it looks in the correct spot. Too many lines of code haha.

I submitted the bug fix to apple already, luckily they're pretty fast now so it'll be out by tomorrow. Praise Apple.

It really isn't a big deal, it is very use-able, I just drag the end bar to adjust the end. I only mentioned it because you just released the update.

BTW I don't copy/paste I import the samples from AS. Maybe you mean the same thing, I never use copy/paste if I can help it.

  • reviewd 5 star fer ya! Good stuff. I like this app. :)

What apps are you guys using to trigger midi in Beat Machine? I'm trying to fix the midi issue and I need to know which apps to get so I can test what you guys are doing. Is the only problem that it isn't responding on any channel except for channel 1? I don't want to mess with any midi code that I don't have to. Also, the code for IAA midi and virtual midi are separate, so I'll need to know which one you're using when you encounter problems.

So what apps am I gonna buy tonight?

I always liked this app, great to see it updated. always fun

  • @dreamless Thanks for your efforts and attention. Reviewing now....

  • Thanks for the reviews. Remember, a bug fix will be out tomorrow, so if you want to leave a review you can wait until then

  • The question asked earlier: Is there a limit to the length of the samples. Has that been answered?
