I'm having a great deal of fun with this one.
A friend had the original hardware one and this sounds close. Damn close.
Great work.
Yes, Jam Synth is great fun using the built in synth or for sending MIDI out to other apps.
Electro Harmonix pedals are my inspiration - I hope they bring their guitar synth to iOS. And the rest of 'em too. They could bring all the digital pedals to iOS pretty easy too. HOG, POG, the sitar one, the reverb...
Prices are high in the pedal world though, so I don't know if they would consider it.
GREETINGS FROM EHX!
We're happy to see that you're enjoying the MINI-SYNTHESIZER app as much as we do. You can learn more about it here: http://www.ehx.com/blog/engadget-digs-into-the-new-ehx-mini-synthesizer-app
Having gone through your comments, here are some notes:
-Yes, the MINI-SYNTHESIZER has Audiobus, IAA and AU capabilities. There is a known issue with GarageBand that is being worked on now.
-The first iOS update will hopefully be released by late next week. It will resolve issues with iOS 8 and iPad 2.
-We're currently focused on MIDI In functionality and CC mappings (from other apps, hardware controllers, DAWs, etc.); MIDI Out is coming soon.
-Android version coming in September/October. Hang in there!
Also, we're taking notes on all of your feature requests, etc. so keep them coming.
If you have questions or requests, feel free to contact us anytime at [email protected]. We'll check forums from time to time, so email is the fastest way to get in touch. Looking forward to hearing from you!
ROCK & ROLL!
+1
@EHX_Support Great job and thanks for the update. I have used the app with AudioBus and IAA but it doesn't show up as an AU instrument. That would be super cool.
Hi and thanks for recreating your synth for iOS. I like it. But I noticed that it sounds more quiet than my other iOS synths, even when the volume is up all the way. And are you sure it has AU capabilities? Like Trueyorky just mentioned I checked a few of my AU host apps and didn't find it in the AU list.
@Trueyorky @firejan82
Just spoke with our in-house developer. The MINI-SYNTHESIZER does have AU and was tested, but it seems that it started having issues upon release and we're just starting to hear about it. This will be fixed in the next (first!) update available in the App Store. Thanks for your help!
cool, I like the idea of having more than one MINI-SYNTHESIZER in an iPad set. Very useful for drones.
Yeah, can't wait to run multiple instances of this. WOW.
Well I can't see it as an AU in, Cubasis, MTS or Midisteps.......
There is no auext bundle inside the package so maybe it was left out during compile time before submission to AppStore...(I only got the iPad version though).
Didn't realise this had/will have AU functionality - will definitely purchase when it's fixed
Seeing this app magically appear in iOS comes with heaps of nostalgia but more importantly heaps of appreciation for what a fully-formed gem it truly is. THANK YOU @EHX_Support / whoever's owed x's and o's.
Fix AUX, fix midi learn, add Link, then I'll buy it, no doubts
Thanks for letting us know all these good news !
ehx mini(iphone) not showing in audiobus (os 9.3 ipad air2/ipod touch 5th gen)
... no probs w/ IAA though
riiight... have app open FIRST
(another Launchpad...)
Request: True IAA Instrument capability (load app into host and sequence with piano roll through IAA; access to the transport controls in the app).
Thanks for the feedback! The first update for the MINI-SYNTHESIZER will be available very soon - we’ll announce it here in addition to our social media channels.
@Phil999 @Trueyorky - remember that the original hardware version was monophonic, so multiple instances of the polyphonic app will be amazing!
@BiancaNeve @Samu @MonzoPro @crony - these are all being considered for future updates and we really appreciate your input.
@gsm - we just replied to your message but it looks like you’ve figured it out! Also, [email protected] is fastest way to get in touch.
@Proppa - the MINI-SYTHESIZER is a big EHX team effort though there are specific people to thank. Forwarding those x’s and o’s to them!
@Audiojunkie - thank you for this and your request has been added to our list.
Be sure to check here, the App Store and our social channels for news. ANDROID USERS: don’t think we forgot about you. The updates we’re making now for iOS will work their way into the Android version - coming September/October. ROCK & ROLL!
Thanks - I queried the AU compatibility - isn't that going to be fixed in the current update? If it is you can have my money.
I have the iPhone version and I really like it. Since it's a reflection of a vintage piece of hardware which itself was sort of meant as a limited piece of gear, you have the full collection of controls you might normally expect in a softsynth. But the presets are great and it has some unique "analog-like" sounds at a very reasonable price.
This would be an IDEAL AU instrument app. Also, multiple instances with some of these patches would be amazing, as noted several times above.
"Yes, the MINI-SYNTHESIZER has (...) and AU capabilities. "
Where?!
Any idea how to trigger this from Cubasis? It doesn't seem to respond to MIDI in!
I have it working via IAA, midi input in the EHX mini-synth set to Cubasis and midi output in Cubasis set to Virtual MIDI
Bit miffed about this one, bought it because the dev said it was AU and despite update it still isn't as far as I can see.
Hm. Not ideal; there are other synths I have to use Virtual MIDI to work, and without a channel select, minisynth will always trigger at the same time unless I render/freeze, no?
I'll investigate!
I think that since they announced it, had it ready and then disabled the feature at the last moment before launch they ran into some weird snafu - like an incompatibility with one host or a device. It will likely come once they've fixed it.
I had a similar problem with Ruismaker where without any logical explanation it would crash Garageband, but only on iPad 4. Neither I nor Apple's GB dev team could find what caused it. In the end I built a workaround to avoid running into the problem without actually ever finding the bug itself, but it's just one of those frustrating logic-defying things that happen when dealing without complex software.
(If the devs are reading this: feel free to contact me if there's anything I can help with - chances are I've struggled through the same things)
Anyone who owns this app:
How accurate is the fine tune control? Accurate to one Cent? Can it be assigned to external MIDI control?
+/- 50 cent, assignable to MIDI CC of your choice. Accuracy is around one cent I believe, but without numerical indication.
Out of curiosity, what do you do with external fine-tune control? Is it for microtonal purposes (each note also sending a CC value at the same time for quick re-tuning), or some sort of pitch bend?
My wife plays ethnic instruments called 'khomus' (North Siberia/Sakha). They are overtone instruments and aren't tuned to any given pitch.. in fact, each instrument is tuned to a different 'random' frequency! Have a look here: http://udaganuniverse.com/.
I tune my own instrument in a self devised temperament and automate the fine tune controls on electronics in order to get everything working together.
@EHX_Support it'd be really useful functionally for cases like this, to be able to set a fine tune control to precise cent amounts.
