  • Magellan and Sunriser are probably the only ones I find myself constantly returning to. Everything else depends upon the track. And is a surprisingly long list.

    Top 5 so far:

    Animoog - 94points
    Model 15 - 88 points
    Sunriser - 48 points
    Nave - 42 points
    DRC / Magellan - 30 points

Interesting to see the two Moogs jostling for position there - but no Korgs in the top 5...

True. But it's awfully early. Seeing how this all pans out in a few days should be interesting. For example, I would have thought Thor would be beating Nave...much less Magellan...based on what I've been reading here over the years.

While I love the big sounds coming from Nave, Thor tends to get more use so I agree on that one. Never really used Magellan, dunno why, just never clicked.

  • 1) Korg iM1
    2) Sunrizer
    3) Animoog
    4) Cassini
    5) nLog MIDI Synth

Wow, this is really freaking hard. My list would also be very different from month-to-month.

Went with iM1 first because it's the single package I could do the most with if I had to only use one. Sunrizer was a close second for similar reasons, and it's probably the one that's gotten the most use since I started iOS music in 2013 as a hobby. Cassini and nLog MIDI synth are kind of like lifetime achievement awards - there are clearly more full featured options (MitoSynth, Thor, etc), but these are classics that have continued to work and have been reasonably maintained despite being 4+ years old.

If you took this poll every 3 months or so going back to 2012 and aggregated the results, Animoog would win in a LANDSLIDE. I just struggle to rank it higher because it's an app that has gone long stretches with broken features an no updates. That's the reason why apps like Thor and Z3TA+ aren't on my list at all, despite being awesome when they work.

I do not have Model 15 yet, but you guys will have me purchasing that very soon from the looks of it. Darn it.

    1. Model 15
    2. Animoog
    3. ZMors Modular
    4. Becomes Troubling At This Point...Moebius Lab, iVCS3, all Virsyns, all PPGs, all Icegears, Mitosynth, iSem, iMini, Sunrizer, and Sunvox too. Damn.
    1. IVCS3
    2. Korg iMS-20
    3. Animoog
    4. Poseidon
    5. Wavemapper

iMS-20 should get some more love, yes. It was my first synth on iOS and i still love it.

I mentioned it in my 'and also' list. It's a bit unwieldy and distinctive for me as a 'go to' synth, though it was the first synth app I bought (and the reason I bought an iPad in the first place), probably because I have the real thing. It is a lovely thing, but I just find the Moog 15 a better bread and butter tool.

First iOS synth for me too (not literally, I'd bought nLog and Yonac Prosynth, but first iOS synth that made me say "uh-oh". Because I'd gotten that iPad 1 for my writing, you see...)
I have a very special feeling for iMS-20, and I agree it's not a bread and butter tool, but I keep going in to play and learn. And the iMS-20, of all the 50+ iOS and vst synthi I've bought since, has me finally looking at hardware, bidding on the mini version on eBay...uh oh.

  • 1) Thor -- where's the love y'all?
    2) Animoog
    3) iSem
    4) Crystal
    5) Magellan

Model15 not listed but will become a favorite once I spend more time with it (a lot more time!)

You can buy my old big one if you like!

I have a few apps that I love for 'historical' reasons: the iMS20 as it was the reason I bought my first iPad. Gadget, as it made me update my iOS after the pad had lay neglected for a year, and Audiobus for opening the doors and making it a serious music tool.

The iMS20 is in my 'must learn it properly' folder, as the song and sequencing features are capable if great things, if only I knuckle down and learn how to use them. I'm hoping I'll get into it more now I have the similar spec iPolysix

    Addictive Synth
    FM4

I'm going by synths I've actually used in recordings. So honorable mention to Minisynth II and TF7, which I plan on using in the future. Also Chicago and Chaing Mai in Gadget ...

Do you want relist as your top two don't count in their romplers form on iOS. I've discounted any 'player' or 'romplers synths, as that opens up to too many sample playback synths.

Which one of Animoog or Model 15 do you want in first and second for scoring?

    @MonzoPro
With the song and pattern stuff, the mod kaossilators, it's always struck me as an academy unto itself, and after years of only auditing the occasional night class, it's still a "must learn"

But unlike all the other must-learn synths, there is something about it that makes the schooling not feel like school at all. The sounds, the GUI, I don't know

Yeah it's a fun app to learn. I can do all the knob twiddling and patching, as I've had the hardware one for over 30 years, but I still need to work on the sequencer/song bit.

I'm in a new band now, and looks like we'll aim to play some festies next year, so the iPad will be joining our live setup. The Korgs and Moogs will play a big part in that, so a definite incentive for me to learn it properly!

Sorry, I didn't notice two there. I prefer DRC. Thanks!

And yes I'd love to buy your "big old one" (!) but Im pretty sure I can't pay you what it's worth. (Wanted to IM you with this but somethings up with IM). Cheers re: the new band!
