In Reactable mobile you can upload samples with web browser (it's in Preferences) including Audioshare, Dropbox...using Safari

  • @Carnbot, can you answer this? This is an excerpt from their website-

NOT A CONVENTIONAL SYNTHESIZER, NEITHER A SEQUENCER NOR DAW…
… although it includes elements of all of them. ROTOR incorporates dozens of modules, among instruments, audio effects, modulators and controllers, which can be linked all together using a flexible and unique routing system, for creating the most expressive and intricate patches.

However, this was said in a post above-

"...limited # of objects included (2 osc, 2 sequencers) "

    Are modules and objects different?

No just means the same thing. All your modules (or objects) are on the left hand side dock. you can drag them into the screen but then they disappear from the dock and they can't be duplicated so are limited in number for a session.

  • I gave it another go, but got too frustrated with the fiddly interface on my iPad Mini 2. When trying to increase volume i was removing notes etc.... Nice idea, but too limited and frustrating in its current form. It may be easier to operate with the pucks or on a pro with the bigger screen.

Thanks for clearing that up. I'll give it a shot.

so then how many loop slicers can you have at one time?

  • Quick question though; there's a demo project with two polyphonic sequencers. How have they managed this? Soon as I drag one in, it's gone from the dock.

There's a monophonic and polyphonic sequencer in the dock, either can be changed to either so you can have two. Plus with a midi in module i guess that means you can have three using an external sequencer, but I haven't tried this combination yet.

Haven't quite grasped all the possible combinations yet but there are 4 loop players which each have 4 slots and two sample players which can all be used together. No sample editing either which kind of sucks esp since you have to go via itunes.

But If they sort out the sample import I definitely will be using this as it is an interesting way to jam with material.

I can't see that happening - Reactable has been out for 6 years and it's been a repeated request.

Yeah it's like that part is stuck in 2010. I'm hoping they'll see more potential in developing it further with 2016 options. i can see in the appstore they're trying to get people to buy it instead of Reactable so fingers crossed they'll see sense.

Looking at ivan_dj's post above, I went to check out the import settings in Reactable. I found an option that allows you to create a folder, and audiopaste your own samples in. So I copied a sample from Audioshare, pasted it in. I then went to the table and tried changing a sample - I couldn't find the folder I'd created, but after going up and down the preset folders a bit my sample appeared in a loose root folder with others. Loaded it up and it played brilliantly - then the app froze, and crashed. Rebooted, the dreaded 'rate this app' pop-up appeared and it crashed again.

So stability-wise, nothing seems to have improved since I last used it a couple of years back, but it looks like you can (sort of) get samples in via audiocopy.

    thanks

and no panning :/ unless I've missed it.

  • Seems like they like it as a closed environment, retronyms style. I fired up reactable last night and had some nice stuff going but not having midi control makes it a fiddling exercise. With modul limitation Link sync wouldn't be out of place.

    Which one? Reactable or Rotor?

  • ....but despite the limitations, I really like this. You can do interesting stuff quickly you can't do as easily on other IOS apps. Linked up multiple devices can expand the possibilities. Just hope they add more import options, midi control etc

Reactable Mobile does. Don't know about Rotor.

Good find...now I'll sound stupid in Barcelona (when they read my email requesting file sharing...). Oh wait, this is Reactable, not Rotor.

  • I asked about import of samples on their facebook page. They replied, "Hi Skip. For the moment, only through iTunes. We will add other mechanisms in coming updates, if users put it on the top list."

So strange, since the "old" app supports audio paste.

I'm just speculating, but if their plan is for more IAPs like their other app has... I bet they don't want it all that easy to roll your own. Or, I'm guessing they're saving extra features as IAPs.

Some of you say this app sounds horrible, while some of you say it's tools are unique and unlike any other iOS app.

Is this a useful app outside of their apparently closed system? Or, is it pretty much... if you like what's in the sandbox, you'll dig it. If not, best look elsewhere?

Samplewise- what I'm seeing with samples I'm loading via iTunes is that the app analyzes each one, likely for use in the three categories of sample: "BPM adaptive", "Fixed duration", and "Free duration", which is taking a while for samples that have metadata imbedded...the app may also be analyzing harmonic content for the Tonalyzer. In my lack of coding experience Im guessing that import with analysis makes some difference to how data sharing is handled.

Thanks I have a mini2 as well, so I read your words with interest and respect.

  • Is this like an update to reactable iOS? Or.....how is it different, a completely new thing?

  • it's similar. The manual is better than in reactable for one thing.

  • Reactable just tweeted audiocopy on the way.

  • 1/2 hour with this app I like it. This version is much better and functional. If I want more I send Reactable Mobile to Kotor with Audiobus and Ableton Link enable. At least Reactable Mobile has better import options:-)

  • Read they were gonna at least add audiocopy very quickly in the first update.

Decided to pull the trigger for a $10 weekend play puzzle. ;)

Just spent 15mins with it... so far seems similar to Jasuto. Fun. I like the interface.

Can't play anymore at the moment, but I had the idea sending Dhalang MG's stochastic generative midi notes into Rotor. Took me 2mins to figure out how to get it going. Appears to be a deep app, but also intuitive at the initial surface level.

Looks like it's gonna be fun. :)

  • it's great once you start getting your own samples in. Yes it's deep but very accessible. The Tonalyser is inspired and it has a very good sample stretching engine . Sample slicing using the sequencers is also lots of fun and easy to play around with.

In fact in some ways it feels like a modular Samplr, and considering the Samplr developer was behind the original Reactable app it makes sense as there's some similar DNA in it somewhere. Although I haven't got the original Reactable app so can't say how different or how much it improves on it.

of course not everyone will like it but thumbs up here. :)
